About this project
Infectious Hugs: Spreading love through music is about just that. Bringing music and positivity to people through spontaneous concerts in unexpected places!
What the hell is this?
We are going to show up, unannounced to a several towns in Central America. We will be playing in Panajachel, Gutaemala on the shores of Lake Attilan where the Maya Peoples believe that the world was created. We'll also be playing on the steps of the of the Iglesia de Santo Tomas church in Chichicastengo, Guatemala, last know place where the Popol Vuh , the Mayan Bible, was seen before it's disappearance. And we will also shooting in Antiqua, Guatemala. One of the most beautiful small towns I have ever visited. There is a little place on a mountain top where we'll be playing a show in a treehouse!
Where else will we play in these towns? Maybe in the town square, maybe in a Mayan ball court. Who knows? And more to the point, who knows how we’ll be received? Will we get avocadoes thrown at us? Or more likely, will everyone just quietly walk away. We’ll only find out when we get there!
This concept was inspired by “take away” shows, mostly shot in Europe. Perhaps on the metro or on a bridge. We love the concept, but were a bit surprised to see that it had never been taken to C.A.. As it is my favorite place to travel, it seemed a perfect fit to combine Nick’s musical aesthetic with mine for travel.
Along the way, we will be filming these shows and the on the road shenanigans for a DVD when we return. This footage may also be used as a pilot for a TV series based on my book.
We will be leaving for the tour at the beginning of August and will be back by mid-August. The music from the trip and DVD and rewards will be sent out by the end of September 2014
August 1-4 Guatemala City
August 5-8 Antigua, Guatemala (this is the treehouse place!)
August 9-12 Panajachel, Guatemala (Lake Attilan)
August 13-16 Chichicastenago, Guatemala
Who are we?
Nicholas Painter is Acoustic Resonance. A singer-songwriter-guitarist from the Pacific Northwest. Nick’s music is a contemplative look at modern existence. Through our connections with each other and the natural world that surrounds us. He is scheduled to play on 107ONE fm at 6PM 3/23 and has played WCBN-FM Ann Arbor, WZRD Chicago and most recently, head lined a huge show at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor.
Thomas Ulch (me) is a photographer/educator/veteran. I am a travel photographer who believes in “barenaked travel”; traveling like a local whenever possible and opening myself up to the people I meet. I see them as cousins that I haven't yet met. They probably think I’m a little crazy. My book “Barenaked Travel” will be published this summer.
Where will your money go?
All funds raised will go to airfare, transportation, equipment (camera and sound), accommodation etc. Following the tenets of Barenaked Travel, we will ONLY hire local drivers, guides etc. All of the money we spend there will go directly into the local communities. We will never use large, outside companies that feed ON the community rather than building the local economy. This whole trip/concert/production, comes from a place of love and positivity.
Risks and challenges
There is nothing that will stop this project. We will be backing up all stills and video to Cloud storage while on tour, so even if we get kidnapped, the footage will escape!
Our cameras are all waterproof, so even if the rainy season hits in full effect, the show will go on!
And as we are doing the shooting and editing ourselves, there should be no problems!
With all of these things considered, some footage will be better than others. Sound quality may vary from show to show. And I'm sure the behind the scenes footage will be shaky. But you will see/hear everything as we do!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
