Lately I've become seriously inspired by (obsessed with?) colors. Coming from a girl who typically wore black for most of her life (NYC, what?) and thought "color" meant anything that looked like it belonged in a funeral home, this is a sort of wondrous transformation in outlook. It's especially wonderful because I have always liked to sew, and sewing things that are all black or drab has, of late, become tremendously boring.
What I would like to do is combine this newfound love-affair with bright and bold colors and my very intimate knowledge (and love!) of quilting into a clothing line. Specifically I've been wondering, what would quilted or quilt-like clothes, i.e. patchwork, look like? My fingers are itching to cut, measure, pin, and press beautifully colored, high-quality cottons into lovely, wearable (and funky!) clothes and accessories - skirts, dresses, shirts, hoodies, pants, messenger bags, yoga bags, gardening bags, hats, arm warmers... really I think the possibilities are endless. I may even do some patchwork corsetry, just for the heck of it (and come on, who doesn't like a girl in a corset?)!
The plan is to draft and create all my patterns from scratch. Since this is slightly unfamiliar territory for me, I will probably look to my closet for SOME inspiration, but rest assured that the final designs will be 100% my own. I have a space in my apartment set aside for all of my sewing projects, and will document the entire process from start to finish (possibly for each piece, depending on how varied the line ends up) on my blog - that's pattern sketching, drafting, creation, and then project creation (cutting from the pattern and construction). All of my trials, tribulations, successes and frustrations will be posted for the Internet savvy to see. Ultimately, all of the pieces (that don't go to those lovely folks who care to contribute) will make their way on to my Etsy store, which is sadly empty at the moment (but will have small things like hats and arm warmers soon).
This is a pretty big project for me, so I'm asking for $900 for materials. And that's pretty much all the money will go toward - material. I will need muslin for patterns, tons upon tons of cottons in various colors and prints (and maybe even some batiks, mmmm!), thread, bias tape, and possibly a new zipper foot for my sewing machine. The only other thing money MIGHT go toward is a train ticket to the best darned fabric store I know of, which is in Connecticut (The Fabric Tree, check them out!).
I am SO STOKED to go on this adventure in color, creating, and sharing, and I hope that you are ready to come on this adventure, too! I believe that creation is an act of love, and I'm always happy to share some of that with the world. ^_^ Thanks so much for taking the time to read this - and I hope you'll spread the word!
