Laos is the most heavily bombed country in history. peaceBOMB is about resourceful and enterprising artisans who repurpose bombs into bracelets.

What is it?

The peaceBOMB bracelet is made from Vietnam War-era bombs by rural artisans in a part of Laos heavily afflicted by the US bombardment during the Secret War, 1964-1973. We want to create video content that shows how, since the 70s, the artisans have taken a constructive approach to the devastation of war by repurposing bomb metal into spoons and, now, bracelets.

What is the peaceBOMB Project about?

The peaceBOMB Project is about the pursuit of sustainable socio-economic development in a mountain village in one of SE Asia’s poorest countries. By chance, in February 2009, the idea to create bracelets from bombs was formed. Nearly a year later, the first bracelet was produced through collaboration between the village of Naphia, the Rural Income through Sustainable Energy Project of Swiss NGO, Helvetas, and ARTICLE 22, a small Brooklyn-based enterprise.

Made with aluminum war scrap metal molded by human initiative and ingenuity, these bracelets not only represent an opportunity for artisan families to generate income, but also tell a story about their makers and the legacies of our shared history: for nine years, the US dropped 2 million tons of ordnance, averaging one B-52 bomb load every 8 minutes, 24/7, making Laos the most heavily bombed country in the world.

Now it’s time to BUY BACK THE BOMBS in view of our short and long term objectives to:

SUPPORT income generation through handcrafts to help subsistence farmers (doubling as artisans) bring much-needed disposable income into their households and develop self-sustaining business structures.

IMPROVE the strongly entrenched war-scrap metal supply chain to make it safer for artisans and scrap collectors by collaborating with organizations that specialize in unexploded ordnance (UXO) removal and education.

BENEFIT the entire village community through donations to the “Village Development Fund” for infrastructure projects including roads, light poles and electricity for the school and other communal areas.

ALLOCATE money from a second fund to invest in other village needs such as education. We are currently assessing village needs to ensure funds have as positive and lasting an impact as possible.

Our promise

With the money raised through Kickstarter, Elizabeth Suda and Wallis Suda of ARTICLE 22, together with filmmaker Sam Rowland of London based production company Bigballs Films, will travel to Laos to make an entertaining and inspiring series of films designed to raise awareness of the project while demonstrating how collaboration between media, designers, non-governmental organizations and traditional communities in developing countries can pave a path toward sustainable socio-economic development.

Sam will produce a series of short travelogue films and photographs capturing the journey in his own inimitable style that will be hosted on the Facebook pages of ARTICLE 22 and Bigballs. We are also currently negotiating distribution across a number of global media portals. The culmination of these films will be a short film made for entry into film festivals in both the US and Europe.

Your support

The $7000 target is a break-even budget that will pay for Sam, Elizabeth and Wallis to travel to Laos to make the films over a period of 7 days at the beginning of November 2010.

The budget covers all equipment, edit and distribution costs. Any extra money raised above the project total will be allocated between the Village Development Fund and Education Fund.

** We've hit our target and have gotten very positive feedback on the story. In order to shoot with real filmic quality, Sam would like to bring along a Canon 7D. We need an additional £1000 ($1600) to rent this bad boy, so continued pledges are very much appreciated.**

Why now?

We need to get to Laos in time for the Convention on Cluster Munitions in Vientiane. We want to frame the village artisans’ narrative within the larger context of the international community’s alliance to ban the use of these munitions, which have a devastatingly long-lasting impact on communities even after war’s end. Getting to Laos for this conference will also allow us to continue to forge partnerships with organizations that can help the RISE Project and ARTICLE 22 continue to improve the scrap metal supply chain.
