About this project
This hardback book is a complete retrospective of the music photography of Brian Griffin. Over 350 pages featuring bands and musicians from the Post Punk, New Wave and New Romantic movements in music, this book is a slice of time, an intensive document primarily of the late 70's and 80's. Over 160 record covers from well over a 100 bands and musicians, Including many Images that have never been seen before, of some major stars like Ian Dury, The Clash, Depeche Mode, Echo And The Bunnymen, Iggy Pop, Kate Bush, The Specials, Elvis Costello and many more.
Page after page is featured a Q & A between Brian Griffin and the author Terry Rawlings that is insightful, illuminating and at times hilarious. A true window into the period and a must for anyone interested in music and photography. On low budgets and before the advent of Photoshop and digital photography is explained how these photographs were executed and the techniques employed, and at times in fact invented.
Another section of the book contains portraits of important figures in the music industry like the Beatles producer George Martin, Brian Eno and Daniel Miller, plus many others. Additionally we have portraits of the people that worked alongside Brian like stylists and builders of his light machines.
There is an essay by Paul Gorman, the author of 'Reasons To Be Cheerful' the life and work of Barney Bubbles that treats in detail the close friendship and working relationship between Barney and Brian and the covers that they collaborated on.
Terry Rawlings also gives a vivid and entertaining description of what the area of Rotherhithe in South East London was like in the 80's, where most of these musicians would come to be photographed at Brian's studio at 121/123 Rotherhithe Street, London.
No stone has been left unturned to make this beautiful and extensive book the definitive record of Brian Griffin's photography and his life as a music photographer.
