We are Chifen & Ewan. We designed a photo and note holder and we need your help to bring this design to your home. We are two second year MA students in Design Products at the Royal College of Art. Usually we’re working on big serious problems like e-waste and air pollution, but this year we’ve had the opportunity to join a Quickstarter workshop run by Oscar Lhermitte, a Kickstarter Thought Leader responsible for campaigns like TAPE ✂️ STICKERS and MOON. But enough about our tutor and let’s talk about Matilda!
Today we spend a lot of time at our desk—you’re probably doing it right now while reading this—it can feel a little bit lonely sometimes so we designed a playful photo & note holder that you can interact with, as we both believe in the usefulness of simple objects. With a little tap 👆, Matilda swings left to right about 10 times calling for your attention. We think this little interaction can bring a smile to your face. This is not scientifically proven as we’re not scientists, but it works on us, on our classmates, and on our school's workshop technicians & tutors. In the end, we’re all humans so we believe it will work on you.
What can I use it for?
It can hold pictures of your favourite people 👩
It can remind you of your to-dos ✏️
It can hold a recipe in your kitchen 🌶
It can hold a shopping list right by your door 📝
It can hold a postcard on your side table. 🌁
Or use your creativity! Matilda can hold anything! (as long as it's thin and flat.)
What to do when you receive it 📭
Matilda will be flat shipped to you as we wanted to reduce the shipping cost to the minimum and to reduce our carbon footprint because we love our planet.
To fold Matilda into shape, simply align the two holes along the edge of the table and bend. We’ve included a little instruction card to walk you through the bending process but here’s a GIF to show you how simple it is.
Let’s get nitty gritty technical 📏
Matilda is made by laser cutting stainless steel. We chose type 316 stainless steel because it is resistant to oxidation and corrosion, and we chose mirror finish because we think it looks quite attractive when it swings back and forth, reflecting the light. We want to offer you an object that’s durable but easy enough to bend yourself, so it’s 0.5mm thick. The material is sourced locally and produced by a manufacturer located right in the middle of the UK.
- Flat: 105mm x 105mm x 0.7mm
- Folded: 105mm x ~70mm x ~60mm
- Weight: 80g
- Material: 316 Stainless steel
- Thickness: 0.5mm
- Finish: Mirror polished (only one side will be scratch-free due to the manufacturing process, so make that the front!)
£1 or more: Thank you 🙏
£12 or more: one Matilda + one Postcard/Instructions 👀

Budget and Shipping 💸
We’re raising the amount required for a minimum production of 100 units. If you like Matilda, you just have to pay a small amount for the shipping which varies depending on your receiving destination, see details when you click the “Back this project” button. Unfortunately, we do not ship to North and South Pole.
Risks and challenges
We both have working experience prior to studying at the Royal College of Art. Individually, we have designed and delivered products for companies ranging from Umbra to M&S. We understand the risks of running a Quickstarter campaign alongside our academic deadlines and this is why we want to ship after our graduation to make sure that we deliver the best product to you with minimal risk. In the nature of Quickstarter, we've designed Matilda to be as simple as possible to manufacture. This is why we chose a design that consists of one part made by one factory. Throughout the process, we will keep you posted of every milestone.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
