~The Big Update~
Whoever out there is interested in the glimpse of what you might support, here you go. Live video for one of the songs from the upcoming record:
Hi beautiful people.
We are a couple of musical students from St. Petersburg, Russia, who met back in 2010 and started writing music together. Some people call what we play chamber progressive rock, which might be fair enough, cause our piano player Gleb Kolyadin has 20+ years of classical piano studies and is still studying, and our singer Marjana (who is now writing this) is very passionate about progressive rock (Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, King Crimson, you know). So in the end, we get something rather amusing.
Here we are:
We do what we do with the help of a lot of guest musicians, especially string players.
We also work together with amazing sound engineer Marcel van Limbeek (of Tori Amos fame) who kindly helps us with running this campaign. He discovered our debut album in 2013 and offered us help working on the new one, released a year ago, "Belighted".
Here's Marcel and me high-fiving during "Belighted" recording:
Our music, in words of other people:
“Iamthemorning are a special duo who emanates a certain magic. In Marjana they possess a beautiful, talented and charismatic vocalist and in Gleb they possess the single greatest pianist I’ve ever met in my life.” Dan Cavanagh, Anathema
Here's how we sound when we play with a chamber band:
Our previous album "Belighted" (which you can listen to and get here) was funded here, on Kickstarter, and took a century. We got amazing Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree and King Crimson to record drums for it, then we got signed to beautiful label Kscope, who released the album in September'14.
Here's what people say about the album:
“A work of incandescent beauty, to be enjoyed without moderation.” 9/10 Clair & Obscure
“’Belighted’ is a monument to progression, art, human emotion, and deep storytelling that shouldn’t be missed” PROG ARCHIVES
The release we are planning now:
"From the House of Arts" was recorded during our Belighted release concert in Moscow at the 31st October 2014. A lot of musicians helped us, so the recording sounds rather heavy at times. We thought it might be a good idea to release something like that, because we will hardly ever be able to go and play for the people in Europe as 8-members band. Our first small EU tour is coming in October, and we'll only able to take our string players with us.
Here's the capture from this concert:
Our label was very kind to us and let us self-release "House of Arts" on our own, because "Belighted" left us in a terrible debt hole despite the crowdfunding campaign (the main reason was that we had no experience running campaigns whatsoever and couldn't make proper calculations of what we actually need...we've learned and therefore the final amount is bigger this time). Current Russian financial crisis and the fall of ruble also don't make things easier for us.
So if this campaign goes well, it will let us gather some (financial and moral) strength and pay all the debts while recording the album three. The material for this album is already finished and will be recorded during September and October (21st of September, the day we launch the campaign, we also record the grand piano for the album). This is another reason why we desperately need your help - we really want to make our third LP something special.
What rewards do we have to offer?
The rewards are pretty simple (but beautiful!) this time so it won't take us a lot of time to manufacture and ship them right after we return from our EU tour. Here are some of them:
You want an example? Here you go, this is how our previous CD look like:
So as they say, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. Following this saying, we've learned, we've improved, we took in account all our mistakes and now we are turning to you to ask you to become a part of our new project with "House of Arts" that will take MUCH less waiting than Belighted, and here's why.
- We already have the music ready for you. Once we reach 50% goal we'll post backers-only update with a link to a song from the album.
- Yes, that means that it is (obviously recorded on the gig) already mixed and mastered properly.
- You may be entirely sure that the date won't move anywhere cause at the 24th of October we're going to the EU tour and we will definitely have the album with us. And you will get it even earlier - right after the campaign is over.
- The artwork is completed so we don't have to wait for the artist! Moreover: the layouts are ready to go into printing. Yay!
Why are we running the campaign if everything is completed, then?
We've, indeed, payed to all the people involved into the process (including our session musicians - the gig was played with a full band of 8 members). That left us our dignity but no funds to even print the first 300 something copies of the album to start selling it on Bandcamp. So we're running the campaign to help us carry on with what we are doing - all extra funds we'll get will go to the third album production.
So here's the deal: we will print small but very cute limited edition of signed CDs - specifically for you, beautiful Kickstarter people. It will only be available here, and no one will be able to get it any other way. Once the campaign is over you will immediately get the link to album download in any suitable format and the rewards will be shipped your way shortly.
Now, we will try to make the whole thing as transparent moneywise as it is possible.
15% to 35% of the sum should be given to UK as VAT. We can not tell for sure how much the % will be this year so we're counting on 35%, not to get into trouble again. That means quid of the goal goes to VAT.
£800 goes for mixing
£200 goes for the artwork
£500 for the gig itself which would be lovely to get back and use in the third album production.
£400 - minimum of 500 CDs
£285 - minimum of 200 tote bags
£285 - minimum of 100 USB-cards
£200 - minimum of 100 hand-made bottle jewelries
£200 - minimum of 100 card collections
£1000 - shipping of the rewards to you
£1355 - 35% VAT
£262 - kickstarter commission
Every pound from this campaign that will not be spent on manufacturing of the rewards and shipping them to you will be used to create more music. We desperately need funds for the third album and your help will be so appreciated that it's hard to express it in words.
Risks and challenges
This campaign ends one day before we set off to European tour, but one we're back we will start shipping the awards right away. Most likely the majority of them will be shipped by the middle of December. After that we will have to stop until the 11th January because Russian post works terribly before the New Year and doesn't work until 11/01. It works slowly so delivering your rewards will take time, but they all should arrive by February/March.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
