A New Fantasy Epic! The Path of the Fallen: Unabridged
The sweeping fantasy novel as it was originally intended. It is now complete with concept, character, and scene drawings.
When I first wrote this novel in 2003, it included an additional story about E'Malkai's father that was important to the story. It seemed simple enough, at the time, to omit it and continue with only the story of E'Malkai.
I recently re-released E'Malkai's story as The Path of the Fallen and was pleased with the response:
5 out of 5 stars: "Wow! I was blown away. 5 Stars for readability, excitement, and character development. It's a sci-fi allegory of today's society. "Intelligence" runs the show, like the Wizard of Oz behind the curtain, where everyone lives in a controlled environment and seems happy because the truth has been hidden from them. And, the closer humanity embraces cybernetic enhancements & technology, the greater hold the Intelligence will have on them. Although it's a simple plot, the forces of light vs. dark, the story is more complex. It is entertaining and even humorous. You feel as if you really know the characters. Like the description says: the protagonist will define a realm where evil does not sleep, and neither will you once you start reading it. The book is hard to put down, especially the closer you get to the end."
5 out of 5 stars: "Once again author Dan O'Brien brings together a riveting storyline and a multi-faceted, well-developed cast of characters. Get INSIDE their thinking! A stark foreboding landscape, the chilling reality, characters that take you outside your comfort zone and lead you down the dark path of dystopia is what you will find in 'The Path of The Fallen'. You'll also find in 'The Path of The Fallen' a WILD premise, compelling read - What happens to E'Malkai and his brothers in arms is an unforgettable journey! Dune, Alien, The Handmaiden's Tale??? Move over! You looking for a book that you WON'T put down? Then join the hundreds and hundreds of avid readers who wait for a new Dan O'Brien novel. Congratulations go out to Dan O'Brien for another intellectual, developed, well-constructed epic! Writing a novel of this magnitude takes the dedication of a driven Master, Bravo!"
5 out of 5 stars: "Dan pens "The Path of the Fallen" and his characters so believable that you feel your right in the story line with them. I was a bit skeptical about this book when I first got it, but found that the plot just sucks you in and doesn't let you go until the end. I look forward to reading more books by Dan O'Brien. Highly recommended for all sci-fi and action fans. This review is based on a complimentary copy which was provided for an honest review."
5 out of 5 stars: "I loved this book. It took me in immediately and has all the aspects that make a book great. My favorite character was Elcites, the loyal and lethal companion who stands by our main guy through thick and thin. A must read if you like action, adventure, and books that take you away!"
5 out of 5 stars: "There are stories that resonate across the boundaries of the written word. Stories that come off of the page and become a part of the reader. The Path of the Fallen is the best part of such a story, the beginning. From the first sentence, O'Brien draws the reader into a universe of awe inspiring wonders, both technological and otherwise, that does not stop impressing until the end. An absolute must for any fan not just of science fiction, but of good storytelling."
5 out of 5 stars: "Dan O'Brien has a stellar book with The Path of The Fallen. He was able to accomplish what many other writers could not; transporting me to another place where the story becomes a reality. I have struggled with many other author's books to be drawn into their inner depths, allowing me to experience the action taking place. I was sucked into this world after the first page. It is a brilliant tale of one young mans struggles to overcome unbelievable odds. It is a must read! You will not be disappointed, rather hungry for more of this prolific authors stories!"
Given this overwhelming response, I decided to release the book as it was intended. Also, I have enlisted artist Will White (who provided the brilliant cover image) to create some concept art to round out the adventure and give readers a unique insight into how the world looks.
My goal is simple with the money raised from this Kickstarter: marketing and submitting my book wherever I can to help make it successful. In the pleasant but unlikely case that this is wildly over-funded (two or three times the amount), then the money will be used to help produce the sequel and more concept art by Will White for the POTF series.
Risks and challenges
I have been involved in the publishing industry for a more than a decade and worn a variety of metaphorical hats. I have been on the front lines and seen what can happen when a project is not planned appropriately. There is always the random possibility of computer error or malfunction, but I have several back-ups made and a variety of computers on which to work. The United States Postal Service is not perfect and as such any lost packages will immediately be replaced, generally with an additional bonus of whatever material I can come up with to make sure that your misfortune does not linger.
I can say with confidence that the project will be completed on time and the rewards will be delivered on time. I will post updates throughout the 30 days to keep backers and readers apprised of the new artwork and any stumbling blocks.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
