About this project

Lost in a Strange New World

Manuel "Manny" Boreaux, a troubled adolescent from Texas, is magically transported into the body of a goblin pickpocket in an alternate world inhabited by faerie creatures. Manny must quickly adapt to the danger all around him and try to find a way to get back home, a feat complicated by the pickpocket's association with a notorious gang of thieves. But when Manny uncovers a plot to assassinate a young king, he must enlist the aid of an elf cavalier and a cat burglar to thwart a Sidhe witch's scheme to ignite a civil war between humans and the Fae.

What Will This Novel Offer Me?

Do you enjoy swashbuckling adventures featuring cavaliers with flashing blades? Or tales of cloak-and-dagger intrigue with fiendish rogues? What about yarns with mischievous faeries who use wondrous magic? Or legends of terrifying monsters and witches who cast evil spells? If so, then Blade Singer has quite a lot to offer you. Also, if you read the novel right before going to sleep, you'll have the most amazing and vivid dreams. (DISCLAIMER: There is absolutely no scientific evidence or guarantee whatsoever for that last statement about dreams, but we are assured that it sounds pretty awesome.)

Who's the Intended Audience?

Blade Singer is a fantasy novel suitable for readers ages 12 to 150. The level of violence and frightening creatures/situations may be too intense for younger readers. Parents should read the novel first before passing it on to their young ones. As for readers over the age of 150, it is likely they are far too busy extending their lives via complicated darkling sorcery to have any time for fantasy novels. The novel is approximately 70,000 words and rumor has it that it's excellent food for the adventurous soul, possessing a pleasantly spicy flavor.

Who Are the Authors?

Blade Singer is a collaboration between authors Aaron de Orive and Martha Wells.

Aaron is a writer who has worked on several popular video games, including Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, Anarchy Online, and the award-winning Star Wars: The Old Republic. He is also the creator of the tabletop RPG Shard: World of the False Dawn.

Martha is the author of short stories, non-fiction articles, media tie-ins, and fantasy novels, including The Cloud Roads, The Wizard Hunters, and the Nebula-nominated The Death of the Necromancer. Her YA fantasy, Emilie and the Hollow World, was published by Strange Chemistry in April 2013.

Where Does the Money Go?

Although the novel is finished, we want to make sure readers get the best product possible. Therefore, contributions will go toward:

  • Professional editing and proofreading
  • Original cover and interior art
  • Cover design and layout for both print and ebook formats
  • ISBN, marketing and promotion
  • Printing and shipping for the various rewards

Stretch Goals

If we exceed our funding goal and depending on the level at which we do so, we would add several interior illustrations. The higher the funding total goes, the more illustrations we add. We would also do alternate book covers that our Kickstarter backers could choose from. If we exceeded our goal by a significant degree, we would add an audio book version of the novel as a reward for certain pledge levels.

New Reward

All backers at the $10 BROWNIE level or higher will receive a PDF copy of the SHARD RPG. Adventure as a savage animal warrior or sorcerer on Dardunah, the World of the False Dawn. Encounter exotic creatures and ancient demons. Master the secrets of eldritch sorcery. Become the lord of your own Great House. An exciting role-playing setting suitable for the entire family!

New Stretch Goals

$6000 - All backers at the $10 BROWNIE level or higher will receive a free digital download (ePub) of Martha Wells' novel Wheel of the Infinite

"What Jack Vance is to science fiction, Martha Wells is rapidly becoming to fantasy...Wells creates a fantasy city so well-crafted and rich, it becomes almost a living character. Better even than her previous Nebula-nominated novel The Death of the Necromancer, Wheel of the Infinite shines with sparkling prose and interesting characters...Wells is the brightest new light in the fantasy field in some years, and Wheel of the Infinite is an excellent novel that aptly demonstrates her powerful wattage." - Portland Oregonian

$7000 - All backers at the $30 SPRIGGAN level or higher will receive an 8 1/2" by 11" signed print of original art featuring the heroic dwarf Gaudulfus the Bold.

$8000 - All backers at the $30 SPRIGGAN level or higher will receive an 8 1/2" by 11" signed print of original art featuring the monstrous troll Lothair.

$9000 - All backers at the $30 SPRIGGAN level or higher will receive an 8 1/2" by 11" signed print of original art featuring the sinister Sidhe witch Morrigan.

Risks and challenges

Since the novel is written, the only risks are in possible delays to the release date due to the schedules of the various professionals we'll need to employ to get the manuscript ready for publication. Printing and shipping can be particularly tricky, especially since shipping will be handled entirely by just a couple of individuals (one of whom must be appeased with regular offerings of dark chocolate). For this reason, we've made the estimated delivery date for the rewards September, 2014, although we'd deliver the rewards as soon as they became available.
