The (Fictional) Story
Copernicus Jones: Robot Detective follows a fully synthetic private eye as he takes on cases and often finds himself in over his head. In the first story arc, which will be collected here, he takes on what seems like a simple case: Find out what a local tycoon is doing meeting with some mobsters. It seems like an easy way to pay off some gambling debts.
When he sees more than he should, the case becomes something entirely different, and when Copernicus starts thinking he knows the answers, someone changes the questions.
The (Real) Story
These six issues, written by Matt D. Wilson, with art by Kevin Warren and lettered and designed by Dylan Todd, were originally published digitally as a MonkeyBrain Comics title. The digital versions are still available on ComiXology.
Our plan has always been to collect those issues in print, but various roadblocks (the series being mostly in black-and-white, for one) made it tough to secure a print edition through a traditional comics publisher. That's why we're coming directly to you for some help getting the series we love creating in print!
The printed trade paperback will include all six issues of the first arc (titled "Dirty Credits,") including the full-color covers. Along with that, we'll have a print-exclusive foreword by Greg Rucka, writer of comics including Gotham Central, Lazarus, Stumptown and so much more.
In all, that's 112 pages of robotic sleuthing!
About the Creators
MATT D. WILSON is an author, humorist and journalist from North Carolina. His books include The Supervillain Handbook and The Supervillain Field Manual. He suggests no one take any genuine life advice from either. He co-hosts the weekly War Rocket Ajax podcast, occasionally attempts stand-up comedy and has very strong opinions about barbecue. Follow him on Twitter at @TheMattDWilson.
KEVIN WARREN is a stay-at-home dad and freelance illustrator. He lives just outside of St. Louis with his wife, daughter and a french bulldog named Yoda. Kevin is currently living out his dream of drawing comic books. You can follow him on Twitter at @theycallmekdub.
DYLAN TODD was raised in the neon wasteland of Las Vegas and its mixture of glitz and kitsch, class and crass has tainted him forever. When he’s not designing or thinking about designing, he can be found rocking, rolling, reading or relaxing with his family. You can find more of his work at bigredrobot.net and on Twitter at @bigredrobot.
If we reach our goal and then some, there's a chance the book could grow by quite a few pages!
At $7,500: We'll include bonus guest strips from Kevin Church (Wander, Regular Show) & T.J. Kirsch (Lost and Found) and Chris "Chance" Brown & Joe Hunter (Radical Guardian Skater X). We'll also add in a two-page story by Matt D. Wilson and Kyle Starks (Sexcastle) and a Christmas yarn by Kevin Warren! Plus, we'll throw in pinups by Jordan Witt, Paul Salvi and Shawn Bauguess!
At $10,000: The book will include preliminary design sketches and other process work by Kevin Warren!
At $15,000: We'll throw in the script for the entire first issue!
Risks and challenges
The risks are relatively limited. The comics themselves have been completed, and are ready to send off to a printer any time. This project is simply to cover the expenses of printing, pay some lingering page rates for Kevin and Dylan, and ship the books.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
