About

'Kickstarter gets you through times of no money better than no money gets you through times of trying to make a movie ….. about The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (and Fat Freddy's Cat)'

We are bolexbrothers, an award winning animation film company. We have been working closely with Gilbert Shelton, the creator of The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (and Fat Freddy's Cat), to produce a movie based on one of their most popular comic book adventures 'Grass Roots'.

Here is Gilbert Shelton talking about the movie

So far we have a screenplay, a storyboard, set designs, a couple of sets, music and the models of Fat Freddy, Phineas, Freewheelin' Franklin and The Cat. We've worked hard to get this far and raised  and we've just come off a four year hiatus an

Here is the teaser pilot for 'Grass Roots' we made as a proof of concept.

You will notice in the pilot/teaser that the characters are not speaking and Phineas and Franklin hardly move, so our next task was to get them moving and speaking.

We got Phineas moving

And we got Franklin moving

And we got Fat Freddy speaking. He'll say it again...

So now we need to get Phineas and Franklin speaking.

Why ?

Because, we can complete our testing and take another step towards finishing our pre-production schedule ready for full production. Then we can produce some more shorts for marketing and promotion. And It will be a useful tool in the Casting process. (we have got some exciting names lined up to do the voices)

To give you some idea of where we are at on this project see the chart below

In progress we have a finance plan in place which includes an EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme) fund raise + related tax credits which will amount up to two thirds of the movie budget. We have entered into discussions with Film Distributors and Sales Agents for further contributions to the movie budget through pre-sales. We have started our marketing through the web with our prescence on Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and Myspace. And here we are on Kickstarter.

Reaching our Kickstarter target means we will have our model making department up and running again and then we can get down to casting the voices. In animation production you can't start without the voices.

And if we achieve our target on Kickstarter we have further stretch goals so we can get into full production.

The Story So Far

This will be the third feature film that bolex brothers have produced. Our first film 'The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb' (1992) won 17 Industry and Festival awards. Our second feature film was 'The Magic Roundabout' (2005) co-produced with Films Action from France. We started the 'Grass Roots' project way back in 2002 when we sent our scriptwriter, Paul Bassett Davis, to Paris, France to work with The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers creator, Gilbert Shelton, on the screenplay adapting one of the most popular Furry Freak comic book adventures 'Grass Roots'. Having gained Gilbert Shelton's confidence we set about developing the film as a stop-motion model animation feature film. We raised over £500,000 to do this and under the direction of Dave Borthwick, the founder and driving force of bolex brothers, and with the close collaboration of Gilbert Shelton we completed the screenplay, production design and planning, the storyboard and some soundtrack music.

We were then ready to go into pre-production leading to full production so we returned to our fundraising team looking to raise a substantial part of the production budget, lets call this the hard money. We started negotiations with possible co-producers, we had an international sales agent who produced some very encouraging sales estimates, all very encouraging until our fundraising team started fragmenting and money got tight as the 2008/9 global recession hit  and we hardly raised a bean. It started to look like yet another attempt to bring The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers to the big screen had failed. But we kept going, exploring all avenues even some crowd funding with our 'Name on the Frame' scheme. We even got some takers (still patiently waiting for their name to appear on screen).

We are not sure if anybody has ever tried this before to fund a movie, but we like the idea and we are offering it as a reward. Back then It was the early days of crowd funding, Kickstarter had just started in the US but did not arrive in the UK until 2012. Later that same year, sadly, our Director, Dave Borthwick died. A terrific loss to us as he was the founder of bolexbrothers and its guiding light, under his guidance and direction the company won over 60 Industry and festival awards for its feature films, short films and commercials. Such a shame that he did not live to see all his hard work in conceiving and developing the movie come to fruition. He was working up until the end at his desktop on the storyboard and the timings of the shots

However he has left us with a project just about ready to go, we just need to get our model makers back into the workshop working on the mouths that will make Phineas and Franklin talk and then we will be ready to start production.

Most of the bolex brothers team who worked on the pilot/teaser and tests are available, between them they have worked on upwards of 20 feature films and we have a new Director, Chris Hopewell, another bolex brothers alumnus, to carry on the good work. He joined us from college, went on to form his own film production company won an MTV award for his first video,  Radiohead's 'There There' and has recently co-directed his first feature film 'A Fantastic Fear of Everything'. We are an experienced team, fiercely independent and dedicated to the cause of bringing the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and Fat Freddy's Cat off the comic book page and into the 3rd dimension with authenticity and integrity.

It's about time for another kind of comic book hero to grace our screens.

Risks and challenges

We think there is minimal risk involved in fulfilling our project. Our model making team are of the highest calibre and have the expertise to complete the task at hand, namely making the mouths of the models of Franklin and Phineas ready and able to speak so we can continue into full production of the 'Grass Roots' movie.
