The Chronicles is the first in a proposed series of uniquely styled original graphic novels based in the fantasy setting of Erinoth, a world forged and forsaken by the gods.
Ravaged by aeons of war and strife, the world teeters on the brink as an ancient darkness, long thought destroyed, emerges once more. Reluctant heroes, capricious gods, political schemers and well meaning pawns play against a rich tapestry of cultures and mythologies in this epic tale.
That's all very fancy sounding, I hear you say, but what about the actual story?
Well, in the first volume we are introduced to the rich culture, history and people of the vast world of Erinoth, and most importantly the two key characters (amongst many others): Jorah Grey, heir to the Vale of winds, and Lyrial Oakhart, a noble born priestess.
When shadowy knights begin to raid the Vale, Jorah is thrown into a desperate hunt to find the lost magical heirloom of his house. Together with Lyrial he travels through the fading beauty of Erinoth in search of the power of a god made real.
The Crown of Grey-Feather
The Crown is one of three forged by the storm god Aelmir at the dawn of time and Jorah is not alone in hunting for it. Emissaries of the Crow King Neros are likewise scouring the land, for the crowns are the key to his plans.
The search for the crown will embroil Jorah and all those around him in the wider of shadows as Neros makes his bid for power and evils long forgotten begin to stir anew.
The Project itself
This project is very close to my heart. I have been developing the world of Erinoth for years now, drawing inspiration from sources such as Shinto, Aztec and Norse mythologies, European folklore, ancient Oriental traditions and medieval feudalism to create a deep, engaging world where the characters and story as as much a focus as the art.
And where would any graphic novel be without the art? When I set out to start work on Chronicles I wanted to do something that I could step back from and say 'That's me. Those are the settings, the themes, and concepts I love'. But possibly more importantly, 'That's the art I love.'
Inspired by illustrators and fine artists, my intention is to produce something different, something fresh. Shrugging conventional ideas about layout and style, I want to create a graphic novel where each page verges on being an illustration in itself.
Below are two pages drawn to illustrate the style. Though essentially
the finished article, there will always be some degree of change between
now and producing the final pages
Where am I up to now?
The script is finished, the series is plotted and the characters designed. Basically everything is ready to go. I've spent a lot of time over the last few months drawing, redrawing and rewriting the same bits of script over and over to get it right, and now feel it's time to tell the tale...
That is where you come in, and the reason I'm here.
I want to do The Chronicles justice, and with your help that can happen! With your support I will be able to put my all into the book, making it my sole focus until the day it's done and producing the kind of artwork it deserves.
Now, I'm not just asking for money to help make it. Your pledges will also go towards funding the initial printing run upon completion of the novel of approximately 2000 copies, some of which will go to those of you generous enough to pledge larger amounts.
So why fund it?
Well, hopefully if you've read this far you like what you've seen... and I hope you do. I feel the chronicles have the potential to become a truly awesome series of graphic novels, set apart by the depth of their story and by the unique artistic approach taken.
Funding this project will quite literally kick start it! Not only will it enable it to be brought to life to the highest standards, but as I've already mentioned, money will go towards the initial print run, allowing the series to become self sufficient from this point onwards. Your funding will turn this long held dream into a reality.
So if you like it, please please please share this, tell all your friends and get them involved and contribute whatever you can! Every penny helps and every pledge means the world. Remember, if the total isn't reached the project can't go ahead and the Chronicles will stay just an idea.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge here will be producing the artwork itself. The unexpected is always around the corner and thus setbacks may occur, but I am utterly dedicated to completing this project in time for it's intended release date of Fall/Winter 2014.
How do you know it's progressing?
I will keep every backer updated, both on Kick Starter and on the official Chronicles blog so you will always know where the project is up to.
Are you just funding an artist's lifestyle for a year? Categorically no. The money I'm asking for goes towards the costs of art material, bills, getting it ready for print and of course the initial printing run itself; all of which makes this a pricey but rewarding process!
As I hope you can tell, the chronicles are a labor of love and something I am desperate to bring to life.
I wouldn't be here asking for your support if I didn't know I could do it.
