Dubious Alliance fantasy bluffing card game (Canceled)
A fantasy bluffing game where players work together to survive while they compete for the greatest adventure to win.
We will reboot this project in 2014! Follow us on Facebook to be the first to know when we do;
You are an Orc...
Trying to collect Treasure, Magic, Weapons and Adventure...
While avoiding monsters, traps, mishaps and a Colossal Dragon...
And the most dangerous challenge of all... your fellow Orcs!
What is Dubious Alliance? Dubious Alliance is a Fantasy Bluffing Game where you are an Orc racing to gather weapons, find magic items, fight monsters, avoid traps, gain treasure and take over the tribe before one of your band gets killed. The game is for 3 - 7 players and takes less than an hour to play. Dubious Alliance is a 'cooperative backstabber'. Orc Players work together to survive the realm, while lying, stealing and plotting against each other to win. Who better than Orcs to represent the 'love/hate' relationship common to a party of adventurers seeking fortune and glory at each others expense?
What Makes Dubious Alliance unique?
Dubious Alliance is a harmonious balance of popular fantasy gaming, 'in-party fighting' and reluctantly working together to achieve a clear victory or end with a Total Party Kill. Features that make this a game you will play over and over include the fantasy gaming world, the Cooperative Backstabber concept, retro illustrations and graphics, unique game mechanics and easy rules that permit complex behavior.
It is a Fantasy game. My vision was to encapsulate years of rolling d20s in search of monsters and treasure into a fast, fun card game. Dubious Alliance is a race to get the best weapons, fight brutal monsters, hoard magic items and collect the most treasures, all while avoiding traps, curses and other ways to look foolish. This game has the action of a fantasy RPG, with the speed and ease of a card game. Even players who do not come from a fantasy background quickly adopt to the game world (treasure good, trap bad!) and enjoy playing.
It is a 'Cooperative Backstabber'. Game testers share a favorite element of the game is the balance between 'someone wins or everyone loses'. To win, a Player must 'lie, cheat and steal' to get the highest Prestige. However, because you are a band, you can't out right kill your competition. If an Orc player dies, the game ends and everyone loses! So on the one hand, you are working together to survive and on the other, you need to keep your competition weak so you can win... truly a Dubious Alliance.
It has unique art. Card games today have incredible art, I mean real fantasy masterpieces, and that's great! Once upon a time, fantasy games were not art galleries. Instead, images were pen and ink affairs. Often your favorite image was that cool picture your cousin drew during 4th period English. I wanted Dubious Alliance to have illustrations and a graphic layout that captured the feel of early RPG modules and home grown adventures.
Some art is as simple as the game card is weak... when you find a bag of copper pieces you deserve limited illustrations!
Meanwhile, Dubious Alliance features 8 illustrators, photos of the Orcs, heroic images of Snarl the Colossal Dragon and fantastic, one of a kind, quality illustrations on every card.
Easy rules and complex play. The rules are pretty simple, in fact they are on a single sheet of paper.

However, the challenge is in the negotiation. Trading cards to avoid damage while keeping the good stuff invites in-party fighting! Every game hits a climax where players can't wait for their turn because they are wrapped up in an exciting race to win... or accidentally lose together.
Unique Game mechanic. What makes this game different from all others is the Trade Tracker. As you horde your magic and treasures, the pressure mounts to trade... because if you don't your 'friends' will eventually force you to. Learn more about this great game mechanic on the demonstration video (above)
The Trade Tracker is great fun because every card in your hand is an opportunity to negotiate a favorable event, or trick others into accepting something horrible. This game favors bluffing, alliances, selfish hoarding and ganging up on the lead player... kind of like office politics, but with better magic items.
Who are A Band of Orcs? They are real Orcs! I met Gronk! at a martial arts studio where he was showing off "Hell & Crushing", which felt like the damage I would expect from Muai Thai boxing. He introduced me to the other Warchiefs of the Gore Stained Axe tribe; Oog Skullcrusher, Hulg E.L.F.ripper, Cretos Filthgrinder and their Chieftan Gogog Bloodthroat.
These Orcs have a rich history in their home realm of Hirntodia. In our Human world they have discovered a new way to gather gold and enslave humans; monster metal music! You can learn more about them on their website: www.ABANDOFORCS.com. Dubious Alliance includes images and content featuring A Band of Orcs, even the player cards are photos of the Orcs.
Long term plans for Dubious Alliance. Once you have the complete 130 card Dubious Alliance game deck, you will be all set. I have watched scores of games and there are enough cards to keep your adventures interesting game after game. This is not a CCG!
However, eventually an adventurer wants to discover new wonders, face new monsters and visit other fascinating locations. You may even want new characters to choose from! Future plans for Dubious Alliance include 'booster packs' with new cards that can be added to modify your Dubious Alliance deck to change the game. Future releases will make your adventure more deadly or treasure laden, trap filled or loaded with magic. Perhaps even Snarl the Colossal Dragon will be shuffled out and replaced with a new, horrific boss monster...
Here is where you come in... I have been working with numerous artists, game testing at conventions, seeking professional input and carefully preparing each playing card. Dubious Alliance is ready for the costly investment of production and shipping. I have a fantastic, professional, US company poised to begin production in time for the holidays. As an independent game designer, I have invested in a high quality product that you will love and now needs you backing. Your reward purchases will fund the production run of Dubious Alliance.
As further thanks for being an earlier investor in a great game, our Kickstarter allies can ungrade their Dubious Alliance card deck with the first ultra-unique 5 card booster! These limited edition cards focus on 'more magic items', including the ultra-powerful Ring of ESP.
I am offering a lot of fun rewards to celebrate Dubious Alliance and A Band of Orcs. You can tag lunch pails with the "Are you Orc enough to join the alliance?" sticker and then wear you allegiance with this heroic T-shirt exclusive to you Kick-starters.
You can have the Orc's Like you on Facebook (much safer than in person!), buy the original prototype of Dubious Alliance and even have the Orc's come to your place (if you are in the SF bay) to play Dubious Alliance!
My personal favorite, have the Gore Stained Axe Tribe film a tirade aimed at your fantasy RPG game! Don't think A Band of Orcs can handle your table top game? Check out their video on Youtube for Into the Maelstrom.... http://youtu.be/JiCldbmWUTU , then prepare your party for the horrors of the Gore Stained Axe Tribe.
But wait, there's more! During the Kickstarter campaign I will share more about the game on www.dubiousalliance.com and our Facebook page, more about A Band of Orcs, introduce stretch goals and project plans for future Traps, Monsters and more cards to entice you and your friends to pre-order Dubious Alliance and keep the tribe growing.
Don't forget to Like us on Facebook... who knows, maybe one of the Orcs will Like you back...
Risks and challenges
The illustrations, cards, rules, production partner and distribution plan is set.
One objective I had for this project was to have product ready for sale when A Band of Orcs begins their U.S. tour with GWAR in October. Although not necessary for the success of Dubious Alliance, I know the Orcs would be pleased to have the game ready for their fans. To ensure a high quality product, I won't 'cut corners' with the production process, so we wont have product to sell at each concert.
Once funded, the remaining challenge will be to ensure production and fulfillment is completed in time for Christmas, my personal goal for all Kickstarter pre-orders.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
