This project will offer, for the first time, fine art prints by renowned underwater fine art photographer Cheryl Walsh. Funds raised will be used to produce high-quality prints featuring four of Cheryl's images:
- Cerulean Faerie
- Amethystine Faerie
- Rosewater Mermaid
- Armored Ice Warrior
- BONUS added Dec 5th: Chartreuse Mermaid
I’m setting the prices really low to test the waters (bad pun) and I’m keeping it super short so that I can get all the prints done and shipped before Christmas, Hanukkah, Festivus, Friendsgiving, Winter Solstice and assorted other end of the year holidays. The campaign ends on Sunday December 11th.
People often ask me if my images are for sale. At first I thought they were just being polite, but after dozens of requests I’m starting to think that maybe people really are interested. I’ve always wanted to create beautiful pieces of fine art on paper that has a weight and texture to it. Something that would bring to others the feelings I get from creating my art: peace, serenity, joy, passion, contentment. My work is unlike other underwater photographers, it is very personal for me and comes straight from my heart.
While my images may look like paintings, they are actually photographs, often with minimal editing other than photographic textures layered on top. I pride myself on my attention to detail, creativity, storytelling and technical excellence in lighting and posing. Despite the difficulty of photographing underwater, there are no excuses for not getting exactly what I set out to get. It’s taken me almost 10 years to master the art and science of underwater fine art portraiture and I finally feel comfortable with the images I am creating.
A few years ago I won the Canon Pro-1 printer for winning Canon Camera’s CPS Image of the Year Award at WPPI. I have used it to print my award winning competition prints. While I love the printer, the size and technology are limiting. Recently I had the good fortune of having a lesson on the fine art of fine art printing with master printmaker Eric Joseph of Freestyle Photographic in Hollywood. I left in tears. His prints were absolutely stunning. He showed me what my art could look like when printed properly. Such a huge difference between how I had been printing and how he taught me I could do it.
I haven’t been selling my work yet so this Kickstarter is a big step for me. If this goes well then I will do a Kickstarter with the sole intent of purchasing a larger printer so I could offer larger prints.
I’m often asked “Why underwater?” I don’t shoot underwater to get an underwater photograph. I shoot underwater because it’s where I feel safe and comfortable. My work comes from a place of weakness, not strength. There is certain loveliness to that, I think, making something beautiful out of a limitation. I’m an introvert and easily overwhelmed when around groups of people. After years of trying to fight it, I’ve accepted that this is the way I am wired.
My primary business is high school senior editorial style portrait photography. I love the transition from childhood to adulting that a 17 year old is going through and I think it’s very important to have captured that in a way that truly represents who that person is. Because I am so devoted to my seniors’ uniqueness, I focus on capturing them and not creatively interjecting myself. As a working artist it’s important to have an outlet for your own creativity and that is where my underwater work came from.
My underwater work is all about me, not the person I’m photographing. At the bottom of my pool it’s quiet and solitary, (except for my model, and I only work with models I really like), everything moves in slow motion, the colors are more intense, the light is less intense, and no one can bother me. To be creative I prefer to be alone, in a dark, slow moving, quiet place. My pool is my own private studio, away from the chaos of the world.
Final prints WILL NOT have a watermark. All prints are signed on the back by the artist. Mats are available only in white.
11/30/16: Stretch Goal #1 has been reached and Stretch Goal #2 has been offered. Please read Updates to see details.
12/5/16: Stretch Goal #2 reached! The following image has been added to the group and will be included with all postcard purchases and is available as a print as well.
12/7/16 Stretch Goal #3 - If we can get to $3500, and we are sooooo close, I'd like to give you all another "Thank You!" I'm incorporating one more image and will make 3 additional sets of wallpaper.. So there will be 4 wallpapers total: one with the Chartreuse Mermaid and Cerulean Faerie which is blue/green, one with Amethystine Faerie and Rosewater Mermaid which is shades of pinks, one with two versions of the Armored Ice Warrior which is an icy white and green/gold, and of course the original. That way you can pick whichever one suits your mood for that day. Once again I ask you to please share this Kickstarter with your social media friends so that we can get to that $3500 mark. So, 4 wallpapers for $5 - that's a pretty radical deal! Anyone who has postcards or prints coming will get these too. I'll attach an example of one of the new wallpapers here.
Thank you for taking a look at my Kickstarter and taking the time to read about my work.
I would like to thank the best most supportive friend a person could ask for, Tracy Edmunds. I wouldn't be creating the work I'm creating and I never would have taken a chance to put my work out into the world like this if it wasn't for her unwavering support. Fate dropped her in the house across the street from mine and I feel like the luckiest person to have her as my friend. And Thank You to Todd for all your support and help every single weekend this summer, fall and now into winter. I appreciate the sacrifices you make so that I can do this.
Risks and challenges
The images have already been created and I have the paper, ink and printer to do the printing. My printer is fairly new and in full working order, however, there is the risk that it could break down, delaying printing. If it breaks down I could purchase a new printer. There is always the risk of delays with the US postal system in winter due to poor weather. I live in a very mild climate so there is no problem with weather prohibiting me from getting the packages to the post office.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
