Thanks to everyone for supporting the Programming Languages ABC++ Kickstarter! Although the campaign has ended, the book is just getting started.
To buy a copy of the book, visit inedo.com/abc for more info.
Otherwise, read on to see the original Kickstarter campaign, and how we got started.
##
Programming Languages ABC++ is an alphabet book all about coding that's fun for both toddlers and their grown up counterparts.
Before you say it, we do realize that toddler's aren't going to learn to code from this. It’s not about teaching a baby to make a program, that's silly. It’s about creating a way for software developers to connect with the kids in their life. Share a little about what they do, in a context that the kids will actually enjoy.
From Ada to Zimbu, every letter will highlight a code language with a “Hello World” program for each.
Kids will love following the Bug as he stumbles his way through the alphabet, and you will love trying to figure out the software pun in each full-color illustration. Plus, at the bottom of each page we will have some tidbits about the creators or circumstances surrounding the language.
Want to see more? Preview the full book -- it's still a draft status, so please let us know if you catch any splelling or other mistakes!
The book itself will be a good size (7" x 6"), pretty durable board book that will stand up to drops, drool, gnawing, and whatever else a kid might try to do to it, too.
You are more than welcome to order more than one copy of the book. To do so simply pledge at a higher amount (30 dollars for 2 books, 45 for three, and so on) and at the close of the campaign you will be able to select your quantity.
Inedo
This is actually our first book; we usually publish continuous delivery tools like BuildMaster and ProGet, but we occasionally work on projects like this.
After our recent and unexpected success with Release! the game (launched right here on Kickstarter), our friends Michael and Martine Dowden told us about their idea for the book, we knew we just had to work with them to make it happen.
The Dowdens
Michael and Martine Dowden are geeky parents, and the pursuit of geeky parents everywhere is to thoroughly inundate their children in that geekiness. But how? What they needed was a delivery system; enter Programming Languages ABC++. The book is a combination of their love of illustration, programming, and trivial tidbits, one that assures their children’s inevitable slide into nerddom.
They both work as software consultants, but are no strangers to the world of literature. Martine previously published Woodlands: The Coloring Book, and Michael himself published 100,000 pages of software documentation that nobody will ever read.
Getting the content and illustrations together for the book was a pretty in depth process, in part because we wanted it to be fun for kids and parents alike.
Michael and I got to the business of writing, researching, and editing, while Martine, Rachel, and the Inedo creative team came up with the Bug, and took him from some pencil sketches to the adorable reality he is today.
After a lot of hard work from all comers, we are excited to say that the book itself is done, all we need to do now is print it.
For that we need you!
The fine folks at Gizmodo Toyland wrote a great article about the project.
Also we have printed out a few advance copies for reviewers. So don’t just take our word for it. Here is what they thought:
I love this little book! If I had a grandchild, I would certainly buy a copy and read it to her! But of course... I'm biased. When I pick up a lovely book like this, written with an interesting concept, charming characters, and a wonderful way to draw in talented children to the world of programming, I am going to love it :-)
Each page is dedicated to a letter of the alphabet and a programming language that starts with that letter, hence the name Programming Languages ABC++. I love that A stands for Ada. Ada is still my favorite programming language. A small blurb at the bottom of each page (obviously meant for the grandparent reading this with a child) reminds the reader of a bit of the programming language history. In the case of 'A' -- Ada was named for a woman, Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron, the poet. She is billed as the worlds first programmer. Long before the women of ENIAC who received little credit for their astounding work as the first programmers in a large computing setting, I confess I did not know much about some of these languages, but all my favorites were here... well, except C of course... but I digress.
Whether you have grandchildren or not, check out this amazing book. It will make you smile :-)!
I really like it! I like that I didn’t get it at first, that the pictures are part of the alphabet game too, and that when I spotted that I went back and looked at them all more carefully. Anything that causes you to look at the whole thing is good.
LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
But wait, there's more!
- Want an oblique programming joke emblazoned on a special kid? We can do that.
- How about a fun tee-shirt for yourself or your other adult friends? Thanks to your support, we can do that too!
Toddler Tee Add-On
Pulling out our team-favorite illustration, we have made an adorably appropriate tee for a little guy or gal, because lets face it, they are just kids and their code would probably be spaghetti code.
This shirt is designed for sizes 2T to 7, but we can put it on an adult-sized shirt as well... but the graphic will be the same size. So, it may look a little weird. Instead, you should consider getting...
Adult Tee Add-On
While you probably don't write spaghetti code yourself, there's one thing kids and adults can universally agree-upon: cookies! Here's a mock-up of the adult-tee.
The shirt is designed for sizes S to XXL (Unisex) and and S to XL (Ladies/Fitted).
$7,500 - Everybody loves stickers, and everybody loves the Bug. It's the perfect match! Help us exceed our goal by 50%, and we'll include three fun bug stickers with the book, which should ensure that the little guy is buzzing around wherever your 3 year old can reach.
$10,000 - Got a wall? Get us to 200% funded and we'll give you something for it ! This 11" by 13" poster collects each letter and illustration, which will delight and amaze your guests, even as it teaches them their ABCs.
$15,000 - Adult Tees! At 300%, and by popular demand, we will produce an adult-sized ABC++ tee for our grown-up fans.
$20,000 - Full-size Posters! At 400%, and by popular demand, we will produce an 18 x 24" poster that will be available as an add-on.
Risques et défis
As we mentioned, this one is nearly in the bag. The book itself is just waiting to be printed, and so a lot of the risks that surround creative endeavors have already come and gone.
Our best, conservative guess for a ship date right now is September, though we'd love to get them out sooner... but this is our first book, and problems can and do arise. At the first hint of any trouble, you can rest assured that you will hear from us.
