Humanity has reached the stars and settled across the galaxy; planets wrestle with exploding populations. Humans can be found on temperate agri-worlds, sweating factory-worlds and harsh fringe colonies. All-powerful Governors create personal fiefdoms, monopolising local trade and industry, while smugglers and black-marketeers seek to evade the iron fist of officialdom. Colony 87 is just one of a million such worlds.
The aim of this project is to produce a brand new range of six 28mm scale sci-fi civilian miniatures for use in RPGs and tabletop wargames.
The figures have been designed with a retro sci-fi aesthetic by fantasy illustrator Will Beck and sculpted by ace figure designer Michael Anderson.
A full set of six Colony 87 figures includes the self-indulgent Lord- Governor Manduc Greiss, his consort Lady Greiss with her strange pet Creaster.
At the starport you will encounter Barcoon Krobosh, emmissary of the alien Amphiran race and Wandering Alexei, on a pilgrimage between the stars.
If you venture down to the trading quarter, you will see the travelling trader Pash Grolin and his porter, Kay Dee.
The figures are roughly 28mm to the eye (with some variation across the range) and have been traditionally sculpted. They will be mastercast in resin and rubber moulded and production cast in metal by Pete 'The Mouldmaker' Brown.
This kickstarter will enable the figures to be mastered and production moulded, which will otherwise be unlikely to happen. This kickstarter is limited to the six figures shown above. Will and Michael are primed to produce more figures for the range (such as workers, petty officials and criminal classes), although scheduling means we won't be able to add to the range as part of this kickstarter - any future figures would be likely to be sculpted towards the end of 2015 and would be a separate project.
Add-Ons / Stretch Goals
It is not anticipated that any add-ons or stretch goals will be included as part of this kickstarter - this keeps things simple and minimises any risks associated with over-promising or, failing to deliver.
Risks and challenges
This is my first kickstarter project. In order to minimise the potential for problems, I'm keeping things small and simple. The miniatures have already been sculpted and the funding is to enable master moulding and production moulds.
Although I haven't run a kickstarter before and do not work in the games industry, I have managed the sculpting and production of miniatures before. These have included event figures for my gaming club, commemorative figures for online community projects, and a small fantasy football line (Beast Face Miniatures), for which I recently sold the rights to another miniatures company.
The time-critical element with this project is the production casting. I have spoken with my caster, the very experienced Pete Brown (aka The Mouldmaker), and he envisages no issues with the timescales involved.
I am not expecting any delays, but whatever happens, I will keep you informed with regular updates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
