We've been tucked away in an industrial complex in the wilds of Irvine for the past 8 years. In that time, our underground following has grown. Now, we see that it is time to bring Blackmarket to the people - more conveniently.
In our arsenal we have:
- A small wholesale bakery
- A mission and a vision
- Plans & a menu
- Funding (mostly)
- A loyal fan base
- An awesome staff
This is what we want to create:
Our lease is signed on a window-fronted, vaulted ceiling retail location at Costa Mesa's center for alternative culture, The Camp.
We're building a retro-tisnal bakery - paying homage to, yet reinventing, the archetype of "bakery". Our mantra is real food, made by hand, from scratch... to create a conscious moment of indulgence for our customers.
You will find all of the usual suspects from the Blackmarket pastry world - from cakes to cobblers, from marshmallows to muffins, from tarts to shortbread. And to zero in on the main topic at hand, from loaves to rolls to buns...
We need your help funding our product line expansion, including a Rotating Rack Bread Oven, to add these new products to the Blackmarket Bakery menu.
Our current (lower budget) convection ovens work really well for most products - cakes, croissants, shortbreads, meringues. That oven will stay at our current wholesale location, cranking out baked goods. But truly great loaves, rolls and buns - old school style - need an extraordinary oven. So that's why we are racing full speed ahead. Construction started last week and is anticipated to be completed by the end of November, at the latest. And remember, if we don't reach our goal, $21000 to implement our bread production, then we get nothing... zip... zero!
And, if we can raise ANOTHER $6500, on top of the original goal, we will use that to purchase a Dough Divider/Rounder to make amazing, yet consistent, burger buns, rolls and slider buns.

Risks and challenges
Just to be clear, we are opening the new location, by the end of the year... construction is underway already.
Our only challenge in completing the launch of our new retail location and bread line relates to marketing and PR. We must harness enthusiasm among our existing customers (and reach new customers) for a local, community-oriented bakery to supply their baked goods. The public needs to know that there are alternatives to mass-produced, industrial products. People want to see the product being shaped and baked right there in front of them. And we will be able to do just that!
Harnessing our 8 years of successful "guerilla-style" marketing, this challenge will be met by promoting our new location and new product line through social media, directed PR, event marketing, wholesale outreach and partnering with area businesses - all strategies that got us this far!
