About

Beekeepers Helping the Honeybees!

At Ames Farm, we know beekeeping. For 20 years,we have successfully been raising bees in a challenging environment with changing weather patterns, increases in pesticide use and the loss of bee pastures. Despite all of this, we’ve had good success in keeping our bees alive despite these problems.

We’ve accomplished this in a collection of re-purposed garages and rented barns. Now we want to focus on the next 20 years by building our own building that is more in line with the relationship between the earth/sun, plants, bees and beekeeper.

A hive of honeybees is a super organism of thousands of individuals working toward a common goal. We would like you to be part of our super organism working to help the bees and our planet.

The Project - An Energy Efficient Honey House

A Honey House is simply the building where beekeepers call home. It’s the place where the honeycombs are spun out and honey is bottled and stored for sale.

The whole process of making honey relies on the sun and earth to produce photosynthesis and provide nutrients to plants to grow and produce nectar in their flowers for the honeybees to use to make into beeswax and honey.

We are building a structure that has minimal energy needs and will fuel those needs with renewable solar and geothermal power.

The new building will be the final link to maximize the synergy between the earth/sun, plants, bees, beekeepers that is missing in our current operation.

What's Wrong With the Current Honey House?

We currently operate out of a small rented dairy barn that has been renovated in addition to working from 2 other locations for storage of our equipment in semi trailers and sheds.

The current rented building has no insulation in the concrete block walls and floor and was never intended to be heated and occupied year around the way we are using it and consequently a lot of energy is wasted.

The new building will also allow us to improve the sanitation, safety and work flow of the entire operation. Its a no brainer folks we've outgrown this place and need to move on to our own building!

Why Kickstarter?

To build our self sustaining Honey House we need land, a plan and money. We already acquired 40 acres of wild land on our own and researched the best energy efficient building techniques and solar and geothermal systems for our needs.

We just need a little help obtaining a portion of the down payment the lending institution requires and and that's where Kickstarter comes in and you can help.

The return on the investment to our local & regional community will be significant and includes:

  • Continual supply of raw local honey produced using renewable energy sources which in turn helps the environment and honeybees.
  • Excess solar powered electricity returned to electrical grid that's connected to local homes or business.
  • Several full time and seasonal jobs injecting their income into the MN economy will become more stable.
  • Preservation of most of the 40 acres as wild pollinator habitat ensured.
  • Continued long term operation of a local apiary that provides pollination of crops and wild plants a vital part of our landscape.
  • Our self sustaining building and business becomes an inspiration and model for others to learn from and adopt!

Who Is Ames Farm?

Brian Fredericksen founded Ames Farm in 1994 when he purchased a small apple orchard and two bee hives along the shores of Oak Lake near Watertown, MN

Brian Fredericksen Owner/Founder Ames Farm
Brian Fredericksen Owner/Founder Ames Farm

Those hives were the nucleus of what became Brian's signature definition of how he would produce some of the best honey in the world, Ames Farm Single Source Honey. Single Source Honey is honey produced at one location from one hive during a specific time period. Unlike most honey that is essentially a blend of several separate hives, locations and time periods or combinations of all three, Single Source Honey is specific to a plant bloom or short time of the honey season from spring to fall in MN.

This one of a kind and hugely time consuming process has not gone unnoticed and Ames Farm has received national recognition for producing the absolute highest quality of Single Source raw honeys which are uniquely accountable, as "hive-to-table"

Ames Farm provides Twin Cities Natural Food Coops, Independent Specialty Stores, Farmers Markets and restaurants with healthy, fresh, local raw honey and apples year around. We also do some pollinating of crops like apples, berries and melons.

Rewards

Many people, farms and businesses like area Natural Food Coops help us in different ways. Please consider being a part of that extended family of support.

In exchange for your help we have some cool bee related products that we produced this past season we will send your way!

  • Ames Farm  2015 apicycle calendar, each month features a photo from our collection of actions shots around the bee farm along with recipes and interesting bee/honey information.
  • Single Source Honey our signature honey in our 2 oz or 9 oz jars . This honey is packaged by the different floral sources and seasons so think variety! Some of this raw honey is crystallized since its raw.
  • Time with Ames Farm staff and Brian Fredericksen Owner/Founder/Master Beekeeper/Artisanal Honey Producer. A wonderful gift for the beekeeper or foodie in your life, personal instruction and mentoring from an expert!

Risks and challenges

Technically this project is not that difficult to make work as there are numerous buildings in use around the world that use these kinds of technologies. Based on our consultations with LHB a leading Sustainable Architect & Engineering Firm In Minneapolis, and solar and geothermal designers/installers in addition to Brian's engineering background we are confident our performance goals of the building can be met.

Our challenges are all financial and involve balancing the limited financial resources with cost benefit analysis of various design choices.

A project of this scope can take time and like beekeeping can be full of surprises and roadblocks. We will persevere though and the fact that we have kept our bees alive and been successful in a very difficult craft, during ever changing times, shows we have the savvy and determination to get the job done.
