The convention is on the Bremerton waterfront, just off the Bremerton Ferry Terminal. We are going to rent out the Kitsap Conference Center and utilize the entire harbor side to set up space for vendor floors, cosplay photo opportunities, musical performances and attendee contests. The conference center has a perfectly sized main hall for premium vendors to set up in while its side rooms will be utilized for game competitions. The waterfront area is a perfect location for the outdoor portion of the event because it is spacious and scenic. If you've heard bad things about Washington weather, not to worry. In the summer the region is bright and warm. Events like the Blackberry Festival are held there annually with great success because the location is so suited to conventions like this.
Anime, music and gaming have all been a huge part of our lives. We wanted to create a tribute to these mediums by exposing more people to Japanese animation and the creativity of game creators, celebrated over the energetic backdrop of musical performance.
We know that the Seattle metropolitan area is already a hot spot for events like this. One of the reasons for starting this convention here is because we want to join the effort to make downtown Bremerton a destination. Bremerton has a storied past with a large base of supporters who are doing all they can to give the city the vibrancy it had during the WWII effort in the 40's. Annual events like the Blackberry festival, the Summer BrewFest and the Armed Forces Day Parade all help to boost business in the area. The city government has done its part to establish a foundation for holding large events that would bring in tourists. We decided it was time to step up and base GAMCON in Bremerton.
GAMCON is non-profit meaning we don't pocket anything once revenue exceeds cost. However, that does not mean we don't want to make the event itself profitable. We understand that non-profits need to be run efficiently and like a business to generate enough profits to cover itself in the future. From charitable operations like low income housing to smaller crowd-sourced projects like community gardens, for those to survive they must be run with the careful practice of keeping costs below projected revenue. This involves knowing how to keep a record of sales and expenditures, budgeting for inevitable unexpected occurrences, and actually knowing the nuances of operation well enough to calculate accurate values for risk and success.
The GAMCON Kickstarter goal is a compromise between making sure the funding comes through and managing to land the "frosting on the cake" for our event. Yes, more popular guests can cost more than double of what we set aside for guests. However, we want to make sure the foundations for the event are set. This is the goal we arrived on to ensure that we can match the basic tenants of a fun convention while being financially responsible and profitable. Things like guest panels, vendors, participant events, prize giveaways and swag are all accounted for in this budget.
With badge sales and vendor rentals the event will be immediately profitable and we can adjust the "frosting" of the con upward while maintaining a meaningful margin. This doesn't even include funding above our goal or sponsorship. It is huge to note that in the absolute worst case scenario of zero sold badges and zero sold vendor rentals, zero funding past $8000 on Kickstarter, and zero sponsorship, the event will still break even which means the goal you see here, in the event of no additional generated revenue, is enough to make the convention happen. We need your support in making the $8000 goal!

Risks and challenges
Everyone knows that a system like Kickstarter has the potential to create moral hazard from creators. Creators may start to feel that their only obligation is to reward fulfillment but not to the actual execution of the goal itself. Our risk of moral hazard is mitigated by the fact that there are many things on the line for us: Our reputations, our wish to pay tribute to things we were raised on, and even the image of the city itself. So rest assured that we are going to put all of our energy towards making this a successful event.
One of the challenges we are facing is the assessment of booth value. Since we are a first time convention we are yet unable to gauge demand by the community which is the driving force behind vendor demand. Nobody wants to pay too much for too little self promotion. To be fair to those who pledge booth rewards, we are going to promote the event as much as possible and drive up the value of vendor space to at least justify the amount of the total booth pledge minus the value of priority location.
Another challenge is space. We are going to rent out the entire Kitsap conference center, including the fountain park and fountain room on the southwestern side of the Ferry terminal. We are aware that the fountain areas can only support so many people for events. If attendance is just right, great. If attendance is much greater than we expected, we will go ahead and rent out the Admiral Theater which seats 999 people for the exclusive events. If the attendance is there that means the revenue is high enough to cover a rental of the theater. If the revenue isn't there but the well-being of attendees and the convention demands it, rental will be paid by personal funds.
We appreciate any support you provide us and will make good on the execution of GAMCON this summer. Any funding, even $1 is highly appreciated. If you're a Bremerton local, your kickstarter money is not only a short term investment in GAMCON but a long term investment in the area.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
