We seek portents in strange places.

I was curious which one of my fiction works was the last to sell in 2015 and was surprised to see it was The 41st Sermon, not one of my best sellers. But I took it as a portent because I've been invited to attend a conference on the Southern writer, Walker Percy (The Moviegoer, Love in Ruins, The Last Gentleman) who is also considered a Catholic writer.

I loved his stuff. He influenced me inThe 41st Sermon and in 1992--a friend having interviewed Percy for a literary magazine and sharing Percy's address with me--I sent him the opening part of The 41st Sermon. He wrote back "It reads well. I'd be glad to look at rest" along with some additional interesting comments.

This was tremendously important to me at the time. I was having zero success getting an agent for my work. To have that: "It reads well. I'd be glad to look at rest" was enormous validation. So I sent the rest and waited and waited and six months later read his obituary in the paper. When I published The 41st Sermon I started with an introduction about that Percy encounter and included the entire note.

I noticed The Conference on Christianity and Literature for 2016 this April at Montreat (NC) College will center on Walker Percy. What caught my eye in its call for papers was a mentioned that creative writing presentations were welcome. So I inquired and found that I might be accepted to give a little presentation and read from The 41st Sermon. I have been accepted!

Pretty cool. But I need to get funds for travel. Although I am allowed to sell books at the conference, I'm sure those revenues wouldn't cover expenses. So I've decided to do a Kickstarter project. Orbitz tells me the trip is going to cost about $1,000 so I've set that as the goal. There is some urgency because the program needs to be finalized so that's why I've chosen the 30-day deadline. Hope you'll be able to help me do my reading and presentation to all those Walker Percy Scholars and admirers! Thanks.

Risks and challenges

Book is published, I've been accepted to read at the conference. Just need funds to get there.
