I am honored to have been selected to go to the iKapa Dance Theatre in Cape Town, South Africa for three months. I will showcase several of the pieces that I have choreographed, including "Beyond all Knowledge" and "Outcry" - as well as participate in the iKapa Training and Outreach Program.
iKapa’s Training and Outreach Program offers classes in ballet, contemporary, and African dance at centers in the township communities of Cape Town. As their website states, The classes are held Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Philippi and New Crossroads, and are currently providing almost 300 students with the opportunity to dance and learn new skills they would otherwise not have the means to participate in. Students attend dance class three times a week after school and are taught by professional dancers and teachers. iKapa Dance Theatre is a medium for social transformation, youth development and job creation. The company philosophy of excellence goes beyond performance and is visible in its social responsibility activities.
I have always been interested in the power and potential of African dance. I have wanted to expand my knowledge of the art form while using my own knowledge of dance to unite and empower the disadvantage children of Cape Town. I have a strong belief that dance and other art forms can promote self esteem and development. More importantly I believe dance has the power to educate children as an interdisciplinary subject making it a powerful tool in under privileged communities where children do not have access to an education they deserve. Another major motivation in pursuing this opportunity is the work of iKapa Dance Theatre. Not only will this be an opportunity for me to work with a professional dance company and expand my knowledge of choreography but it will be a way for me to implement my ideas of empowerment and education through the medium of dance. This dance company stands for everything I believe in.
I am raising funds to help cover the cost of my transportation to Cape Town. Any contribution is greatly appreciated!
