Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

a3Genealogy identifies resources for family researchers and historians in an effort to keeping history alive and preserving our American history. This project will be completed in 3 phases: 1) scan/copy each page of original fragile Colored Marriages of Saline County Missouri 1865-1870 book, and 2) index and transcribe each marriage record by marriage. 3) A family cross-reference index will be created for the children born in slavery named in the marriage book. This Saline County practice allowed full families to be listed and recognized for future birth records.

FAQ

  • Yes, this Missouri Marriage book does include slave owners. However, many of them came from VA, IL, OH and KY areas. This area was originally part of the Louisiana Territory. We have not been able to do a full inventory of names, slave masters, etc.

  • Here is a bit more on the Colored Marriages of Saline County, Mo. 1865-1870 project posted on Kickstarter: The original book has 111 pages and on average every page has 5-6 entries like those in the picture on Kickstarter. As we cannot remove the book from the Court, digitizing will be done onsite. The book is fragile and copies of pages will be time consuming. To keep costs low, we have secured donations of any equipment needed. The seed funds will assist in covering the cost of 2 persons working on the project to produce a searchable database and a library of high resolution images. Here are a few of the cost that will be incurred: copying records, indexing, and transcription hours, plus costs for building website, and quality insurance. When possible we will add background on the various Saline County black communities at the time, (i.e. Pennyville later called Pennytown) and a listing of associated cemeteries. There are about 8 identified settlements. Like all slave communities, certain family surnames (i.e. Jackson, Green and Brown) make identifying individual ancestors and the correct slaveholder quite challenging. This is an ongoing project. *a3Genealogy *is prepared to match the funding as needed, but we believe the seed money will cover the bulk of the project cost. Ideally, distribution will be via dedicated webpage and the end project will be free and available to the public .*a3Genealogy *will maintain the website, but have hopes this will be a collaborative effort. Supporters will receive pre-released copies of the entries whereas the public will need to wait until the webpage is completed. This will allow us to have a quality project when released to the public.
