Ace of Space is an oddball narrative 3D space shooter, set in the space future, with an exciting single player space story. For PC!
About this project
This is the high-flying action-adventure you didn’t even realize you wanted.
Until now.
In a dogfight during World War II, our daring hero, Ace, flies through a wormhole that opened up over the skies of Europe. He emerges from the other side out of control, spinning, and seeing the specs of stars and planets around him. What year is it? Where is he? How can he breathe? How is his biplane flying in space? How does his bomber jacket protect against cosmic radiation? Were biplanes actually used by American airmen in WWII? Is this story not even historically accurate?
Quit wasting time. We have a battle to win. Be the Ace of Space.
Born from a late night brain storm session, we were laughing a little too much at the idea of a WWII-era fighter plane taking on the baddest aliens in the galaxy, in space. You know, doing loop de loops and barrel rolls. Trying to return to serious business, we kept coming back to that old-school biplane flying across the solar system, effortlessly shooting down alien craft. We just couldn’t pass this idea up. We had to try to make it happen. Here we are.
With absurdist humor and stylized cutscenes, we believe this game can be something great, but we need your help. Fund this project so we can make the game that you didn’t know you wanted until we made you realize you wanted it.
Polyvex Interactive is a collection of passionate game developers, designers, and artists, who each have had a lifelong dream of making video games for others to enjoy.
We want Ace of Space to be a PC game (distributed via Steam) with a single-player campaign, targeting about 6 hours of playtime with a reasonable amount of replayability (interesting boss fights, extra secrets, easter eggs). Our game will feature an entertaining story, a striking visual style, and a whole list of “Yo Mama” jokes we found on this website from 1996. But more importantly, we want a game that feels great to play. Growing up with classics like Star Fox, Tie Fighter, and Rogue Squadron, we want a game that lives up to the titles that got us interested in making games in the first place.
The game will have controller and joystick support, and we are looking at the possibility of porting to consoles. We are aiming for a $20 price point for the title, with roughly an 18 month development timeline, bringing the release date at some time near the end of 2017.
You: a tough as nails World War II fighter pilot named Ace shooting down evil Nazis. Suddenly, you’re sucked through a wormhole. You emerge, weightless, cold, lost, hungry, sad. Heck, you might even be dead. You’ll never get that Purple Heart now.
Spinning aimlessly, Ace contemplates just giving it all up. You know, starting a ranching business on the moon. What did you think we meant?
But wait! What’s that on the radio? Sounds like they’re speaking American! And they need my help. Killin’ aliens can’t be too different from killin’ Nazis. I guess it’s time to bring freedom to the galaxy.
That’s an intro to the story - we don’t want to spoil too much up front. So, instead, here are some concepts of Ace and his fellow robot friend Gary fighting aliens. You can also see our gameplay teaser up top!
Ace of Space
You are Ace. A slick World War II fighter pilot. Your old mission: kill the Nazis and bring freedom to the world. Too bad you got sucked into a wormhole and your life changed forever. Now you have to... kill the aliens and bring freedom to the galaxy.
Actually, I guess that’s pretty much the same thing.
Gary the Robot
Gary was just a regular airplane maintenance bot in a hangar on the moon. When out of all the hangars, on all the moons, Ace had to stumble into his. Now, he’s Ace’s trusty sidekick, helping to free Earth from the clutches of those darn aliens.
Evil Aliens
‘Nuff said. They’re evil. And they’re aliens. What else do you want? Evil Nazi aliens?
Friends? Foes?
Ace will be meeting a whole slew of friends, enemies, and maybe even some frenemies along the way. Earthlings, aliens, and robots of all shapes, sizes, and dietary preferences.
Good News! We will be reaching out to our backers to find out what kinds of characters you'd want to see in the game! We want to involve our loyal supporters in the development process, so we will be quizzing and polling to make this a collaborative and fun process. You might even get to name one of the bad guys. Mister Splashy Space, maybe?
We already have great voices on board from all around the YouTubes!
With Pamela Horton, host of Gamer Next Door, and Harley Morenstein, host of Epic Meal Time, already pitching in with their wonderfully sculpted vocal chords, we plan on teaming up with even more of the gamers you know and love to make a game by the people who truly love to play them. It’s gamerception!
To be honest, we would not make this game unless we knew that other people think it will be as awesome as we do. We’re here because we want your help and participation in making this a great, funny, playable game. If there’s sufficient interested in Ace of Space, we plan on working full time to for the next year in order to bring this game to life, involving our backers in different capacities along the way. See our list of perks for different methods to get involved.
The money provided by you will be helping to pay for at least one full-time game programmer, one full-time designer, and a full-time artist for concept and 3D work. We will also be using this funding to pay for any extra assets not created directly by our team, such as music composition for the soundtrack, voice talent, and any extra visual assets used in the game. Working with talented people costs money, and we believe strongly in paying a fair price for their work (and we hope you feel the same way!). To give you a better idea of exactly how we want to use the funding, we’ve broken down our budget below:
Game Budget
We have some great rewards for our backers! First up, early bird backers can get a $5 discount off of the game, so act fast! For those of you who want more gear, we have tons of great Ace of Space merch that you can get when backing at a higher level, like lunchboxes, flight jackets, and genuine flight caps, possibly worn by the Ace himself (parallel dimension of wearing not guaranteed).
We love our VIPs!
We also have producer credits and VIP access for backers that want to take a front seat in the cockpit and really believe in the game! For those of you who select this level of backing, we love you!
Shipping
We try to keep this stuff simple, but we are adding $5 to backers outside of North America with non-digital merch to cover our shipping costs at certain backer levels. Shipping stuff can be hard, so thank you for understanding!
Get us past our funding goal and help us take advantage of these great extras for the game!
Risks and challenges
The game will be so awesome that you will go insane; you will never enjoy another video game ever again, colors in the outside world will appear dull, and food will taste bland.
But in all seriousness, this is our first major game under Polyvex Interactive. Although our team has previously worked on smaller iOS, Android, and desktop titles, this will be our first big project. That means that project delays and over-scoping can happen. That’s why we want you, our supporters, to come along for the crazy ride to watch us make our first game. It’s great to have friends!
In order to mitigate these risks we have been surrounding ourselves with some of the industry’s best minds. Our team is currently distributed between Los Angeles and Montreal, which means we are close to much of the action going on in the gaming industry. We are constantly reaching out to many other studios for support, and in turn getting great opportunities to ensure that our game stays on track and properly scoped.
