STOLEN is a dramatic short film that follows troubled, 14-year old, Shayna Hill as she is admitted and runs away from her group-home. Roughly inspired by the recent murders and attacks on Native girls, it is a small glimpse into a typical Native girl’s life before becoming one of 1200+ Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in Canada.
Through quiet, cinematically beautiful storytelling, STOLEN exposes a national issue that narrative filmmaking has never explored before.
WHY THIS STORY?
Message from the Writer/Director:
It has become unavoidable; everywhere you turn, you can't help but see or hear about more Native girls who are stolen from their families. Almost every reserve in Canada has lost a young woman, mine included… This doesn't even mention those living in urban areas. You can't turn on the news or scroll down your newsfeed without hearing about yet another native girl who is missing, ANOTHER girl whose remains has been discovered.
As an Aboriginal woman, I am three times more likely to be a victim of a violent crime. I am also four times more likely to be murdered than non-native women are. For the size of our population, Aboriginal women account for an incredibly overrepresented percentage in missing persons and murder statistics (Amnesty International, 2014).
With this ever-increasing epidemic, and the Government's refusal for a National Inquiry, STOLEN has never been more important to tell... It's also never been more important for Canadians to hear.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge I face is the fact that this is my first time behind the camera as a writer/director. However, I am confident that I can pull this off. I have a clear and powerful story that I am incredibly passionate about, I have over ten years of experience on film sets as an actor and most importantly, I have an experienced team who fully support me and my story.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
