What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

“universal rig handle/battery for filmmakers”

                                 TOUGH. POWERFUL. INTELLIGENT.

  • Removable battery

Removable 50W cartridge (4x 18650 Lityum batteries), dual voltage selector with OSD display of battery charge status for long lasting camera operations.

With 50W of power, the Power Grip has more power than 3 Canon Lp-E6 batteries (Blackmagic Design BMPCC4K)  or 3 Sony NP-FZ100 batteries (Sony A7 III)

  • Robust rig handle

Robust and ergonomic rig handle built in durable metal, with 1/4” and 3/8” inch threaded holes. Center of weight is kept central to the rig and to the camera.

  • Interchangable Brackets

Easy to attach to any kind of rig or even directly to camera: Nato rail, 3 hole and single hole

  • Integrated Led Lamp

Integrated 10W front Led Lamp

  • Bubble Level

Small integrated and discrete level to assist any kind of videomaking

  • Telemeter

                                                          - STORY -

It all started from a simple sketch in Photoshop by Marcello. Creating the "perfect rig" it's almost the "Sacred Graal" of filmmakers, and Marcello makes no exception. He always liked to experiment and test all those gimmicks that you find on the web. When he bought the new Blackmagic Pocket 4k it became clear that "the world out there" was looking for a battery that could overcome the limitations of the camera. Marcello is a fan of handled shooting and to have a "pocket" camera with a huge V-Lock battery was not what he had in mind.

Marcello and Giuseppe worked together for three years on TV shows for national TV in Italy and after that they continued to collaborate on commercials and corporate videos. So when Marcello sketched the idea, Giuseppe was the first person to contact. Not just for 3D model but for his expertise in 3d printing and in building models and prototypes.
When it was clear that the electronics would become important on this project Marco, a friend of Marcello,  was involved.

We preceded per steps. Battery power was the first to set up. Lithium batteries need electronic controls that were welded in the battery pack of the first "proof of concept"  but will become part of the handle in the final model.  To find the right led light was a bit of a challenge and to ne honest we are still looking for the perfect one. In the meanwhile Marco researched Arduino libraries while Giuseppe and Marcello worked on many 3D PLA prints to solve small but important tasks like the dovetail rail to quickly replace battery cartridge or the interchangeable bracket.

                                                        - TEAM -

Marcello Mazzilli. Producer and entrepreneur

British - Italian video producer. I created videos for TV, advertising and corporate during 25 years of work. I still enjoy shooting videos myself and I love to adapt and modify my equipment. I created a portable 10bit HD video switcher case and many rigging solutions for my work.

Giuseppe Rapacciuolo. Graphic Artist and Designer

Since I was a kid I've always been interested in modeling and building. My job career brought me to collaborate with many architects and designers like me. Precision and attention to details have always been a must in my projects and this one will be no difference.

Marco Calò. Elettrical Engineer

I'm an Electrical Engineer in Audio Video and Control field. I’m a passionate maker, PCB designer using Eagle, CNC builder for PCB engraving and case production. I use and program micro-controllers using the Arduino platform in Home Automation, audio, control systems projects.

And also many thanks go to...

Marian Munteanu, Francesco Domenico D'Auria, Alessio Di Fede and the others that are helping...

Risks and challenges

A new project, no matter if big or small, is always a challenge.
Our mind is set up to deliver a wonderful device that filmmakers from allover the world would want to use on their everyday job. Something useful... and beautiful. Something that we hope could define a standard for the future of camera rigs.

Our commitment is to do our best. All software parts will rely on open source code that we are adapting to our needs. We already have pre-agreements for the supply of electronics, and once the electronic part is 100% defined we know we can optimise space in the handle and reduce the final size.

We promise we will keep you updated through weekly reports and we will be available to interact with funders in any possible way. This is a device for filmmakers so we want to hear from you.

The path is set. Now is up to you!
