About

"Going green starts with changing the way you sleep" - Mashable

"Talk about the dreamiest sleep ever!" - Martha Stewart

Your search for the perfect bed sheet has come to an end! Kyoto Threads is excited to offer the world’s first plant-based bamboo bed sheet! It’s time we took a cold, hard look at the bed sheets we sleep on and the harmful effects they have on our bodies and the earth. Our revolutionary bed sheets are free of toxic chemicals and eliminate the use of cotton as a raw material - good for you and good for our planet!

Oh, and to top it off, we’ve stopped at nothing to make these earth-friendly bed sheets so silky and soft, you may have to invest in a louder alarm clock!

What makes Kyoto Threads different?

We’re on a mission to create an extremely luxurious bed sheet while keeping both your health and the health of our planet safe! Everyone owns a pair of bed sheets on which we spend a third of our time sleeping. With the massive consumption of this linen, do you ever stop to wonder what the sheets are made of? We have, and we’ve dedicated ourselves to improving the very thing you rest on every night. Our bed sheets are sustainable. They’re made of green products that are properly sourced, free of toxic chemicals and safe for the environment, all without sacrificing comfort and price.

Why you’ll want to sleep in our Plant-Based Bamboo Bed Sheets Sheets

We know the feeling of crawling into fresh sheets at the end of a long day. Even small amounts of the toxins found in bed sheets either from the dying process or the wrinkle-free agents have been linked to cancer and respiratory illnesses, including asthma attacks. Our bed sheets use no anti-wrinkle agents and no harmful chemicals in the dying process. We want to deliver the highest level of comfort with the highest level of sustainability.

Here are three key features that make our bed sheets the best and most unique on the market:

1. Sustainability: our sheets use the incredible sustainability of bamboo as a rare material.

2. Eco-Friendly: the fiber is made using lyocell, a closed-loop process to recapture and reuse 99% of the chemical solution resulting in minimal environmental impact and lead to economical usage of both energy and water.

3. Health benefits: the sheets incorporate an incredible new plant-based dyeing process based on traditional Asian medicinal roots, fruits, and vegetables - completely non-toxic and gentle on the skin!

BONUS: the sheets still have that incredibly soft and silky feel making getting out of bed in the morning pretty difficult.

Why bamboo is more sustainable than cotton?

We love using bamboo as a raw material in our sheets. As durable as bamboo is, it can actually be woven into one of the softest, comfortable fabrics on earth. Did you know that bamboo is one of the fastest growing natural resources on the planet (it can grow up to one yard per day). While bamboo uses only 12 gallons of water to produce one pound of fabric, cotton requires over 200 times more. Another argument for using bamboo is that it does not require replanting after harvesting because its vast root network continually sprouts new stems. The roots pull in sunlight and greenhouse gases and convert them into new green growth. Bamboo grows without the need for petroleum-guzzling tractors and poisonous pesticides and fertilizers, and in fact when Japan’s Hiroshima was bombed, Bamboo was the first plant to grow back, bringing green back to the land.

Compare this with using traditional cotton. Pesticides and fertilizers are utilized in the production of cotton with 25% of the world’s pesticides and 7% of the world’s fertilizers coming from cotton. Cotton is the largest use of water among all agricultural commodities, exhausts the soil and further climate change. It can take 2,700 liters to produce the cotton needed to make a single bed sheet, and World WildLife (an international non-governmental organization founded in 1961, working in the field of the wilderness preservation, and the reduction of humanity's footprint on the environment) contends that current cotton production methods are environmentally unsustainable.

Why Lyocell is more eco-friendly than Rayon

The process of turning bamboo into fabric is chemically-intensive. The result is called bamboo rayon and is produced through a highly intensive chemical process. It is most commonly made through what is known as the viscose process, which involves dissolving cellulose material (such a bamboo) in a chemical solution. The chemical can be harmful to human health, and about 50% of hazardous waste from rayon production cannot be recaptured and reused and goes directly into the environment.

Kyoto Threads uses a different process to create our fabrics using lyocell - a closed-loop process to recapture and reuse 99% of the chemical solution resulting in minimal environmental impact and economical use of both energy and water. Lyocell is made from sustainably farmed eucalyptus trees, and where there are roughly 13 different toxic chemical solvent processes in Rayon method, there is only one solvent in the Lyocell process. The FTC has recognized the Lyocell solvent as a “non-toxic” solution and with every stage of processing comes further energy and water savings. The skin is the largest human respiratory organ. Lyocell supports the natural ability of the skin to act as a protective shell to regulate body temperature and maintain water balance. Bamboo Lyocell is truly an environmental achievement in fiber production.

Why our plant-based dye is healthy for your body

To further differentiate ourselves and increase sustainability, we’ve also modified the dying process. Rather than adding toxic chemicals to dye our sheets We wanted to offer sheets dyed using the latest advanced dyeing technology with ancient coloration materials based on traditional medicinal plants. To produce this innovative dye, tanks are filled with batches of fiber together with liquid natural dyestuff and exposed to ultrasonic pressure waves that push the color pigments into the core of the fiber. This is what gives our dye the unique color fastness never before achieved with natural plant dyes, without adding chemical fixation agents or other forms of after treatment. The dyes are based on traditional Asian medicinal roots, fruits, and flowers. These powerful natural resources have traditionally been used for a huge variety of purposes, and still have an important role in many Far East cultures.

Thanks to this unique solution, we are able to offer yarns in a beautiful range of unique colors that are completely non-toxic and gentle on the skin. The plant dyed yarns we use to make our bedding are the only commercial lyocell bamboo products available.

How the dyeing process works

The dyeing process is a revolutionary new patented dyeing technology that combines beautiful natural colors and ancient dyes with a high-tech ultrasonic fiber dyeing process. The dye is implemented at fiber level before the yarns are spun. Dye-tanks are filled with batches of fiber together with liquid natural dyestuff and exposed to ultrasonic pressure waves that push the color pigments into the core of the fiber. This is what gives the dye the unique colour fastness never before achieved with natural plant dyes, without adding chemical fixation agents or other forms of after treatment.

Farming of the plants for the dyes is done in areas with a natural abundance of water, limiting artificial irrigation. The plantations where the plants are grown only use natural fertilizers. By growing in crop rotations, the soil conditions are improved, and pesticides are avoided. The dyeing mills are close to the farms to reduce the environmental impact of transportation. Through lower dyeing temperatures and shorter dyeing times, the dye offers measurably improved efficiency in energy and emissions.

Why bamboo lyocell with plant-based dying works

These three features come together to create a more sustainable product for you to rest on every night. Using bamboo as a raw material, a lyocell fiber, and plant-based dyed yarns allows us to have a minimal impact on the environment and economical use of energy and water.

We work closely with our manufacturing partners to make sure all our products are ethically made. All our products are made with FSC-certified organic bamboo and pass the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 test to make sure no harmful substances remained in the products at the end of the manufacturing process.

Sleep on the most sustainable bedding fabric

Our sheets are for consumers seeking a more responsible alternative for premium luxury bedding. Our sheets will be soft, breathable, odor-fighting and skin friendly, providing an excellent and luxurious hand feel and lead to a better quality sleep. Kyoto Threads’ mission is to educate on the harmful effects of bed sheets widely available and provide an affordable alternative. By supporting Kyoto Threads, we can reduce cotton consumption, diminish poisonous pesticides, fertilizers, and toxic chemicals, decrease water waste, and leave a more positive footprint on our planet.

Added benefit: Our bamboo sheets have the feel of opulence and also have incredible characteristics like wicking away moisture from your body when you sleep and helping reduce the humidity in your bed. They regulate your body temperature, and thus they create an exceptional sleep experience. Hot sleepers will stay cooler and drier at night! Women going through menopause, or who are pregnant and men who suffer from night sweats will love and appreciate the thermal regulating qualities of luxury bamboo sheets. They are pure perfection in bed. They are a celebration of luxury and comfortable life and really are the best luxury bed sheets.

How we save you money

We want to deliver the highest quality sheet at the lowest price point to the consumer. We believe healthy, and sustainable living should be affordable to all. To do so, we cut out the middlemen in the distribution chain and deliver our product directly to the consumer. By simplifying the traditional retail process and eliminating retail store expenses and markups, we pass on the savings directly to you.

Size and Design

Your bed is the focal point of your room. We know that a beautiful bedspread can completely affect the tone and experience of the bedroom. With that in mind, we’ve developed rich colors to accentuate and bring a lively feel to the room. Our designs feature neutral colors that reflect the plant-based dyes they’re made out of.

Care Instructions

How Often Should You Wash Your Bed Sheets?

It’s really a personal preference, but in general, it’s probably smart to wash them once a week to remove dirt and dust. You should clean your bed sheets with warm or cold water rather than hot water, which can shrink fibers.

 How To Dry Bed Sheets?

You should try tumble dry or use a low spin speed cycle for your bed sheets. Be sure to follow instructions on the label and remove them from the washing machine before they’re fully dry to help minimize wrinkles. To avoid a very messy situation, like mildew growth, make sure your bed sheets are dry before storing them.

 Where To Store Bed Sheets?

You should try to keep your spare bed sheets, neatly folded, in a cool, dry closet or drawer. Do not store your bed sheets in plastic containers, because containers will most likely trap moisture and foster the growth of mildew.

How Often To Change Bed Sheets?

When you buy bamboo sheets, you will not have to replace your sheets very often. They are extremely durable! If you buy regular sheets, you might need to replace them frequently because washing them a lot will break down even the highest quality sheets. You will probably begin to see visible signs of aging, such as stains or faded patterns and then you will know their periods of sleep are numbered.

Funding goals and stretch goals

We are looking to raise $30,000 to help us fulfill minimum order requirements and allow us to bring the cost down on our product. Once we’re able to hit our minimum orders in white, we are extending stretch goals which would give us access to more colours. We’ll be able to offer a wide range of colours that reflect the natural composition they’re made out of.

About the founders

Allan Satim and Josh Barzilay have a passion for selling bamboo bed sheets. In fact, they've been selling bamboo bed sheets online through their website Bamboo Sheets Shop for the past 5 years now. With new “bamboo” products constantly entering the market and greenwashing the features, they decided it was time to innovate. They did countless reviews of the process of making bamboo bed sheets and found key areas to improve upon. The result: a product maintains bamboo as a raw material, replaces the rayon fiber with lyocell and incorporates a natural, plant-based dyeing process. Kyoto Threads bed sheets leave you sleeping cozier and healthier with minimal environmental impact.

Allan has a ton of experience in logistics and product manufacturing. He spends countless hours in his warehouse organizing stock and shipping product, ensuring that every single sheet gets to the customer as quickly as possible. Josh is a master researcher and technology guru. He's ensured the components of our new bed sheets are properly sourced and come together to make up the most sustainable bedding possible. He's also done a fantastic job building our website and the brand.

Together, they are eager to bring their innovative new bed sheet to the world.

They are happy to answer any questions or concerns about the product you may have, you can reach out to them directly by email: josh@kyotothreads.com , allan@kyotothreads.com
