Thanks everyone for making the Runners Volume 1: Bad Goods Kickstarter campaign a great success!! It was a bit of a nail-biter for a little bit, but the campaign rallied in the last several days to end strong. Thanks for all the pledges and especially the kind words of support for the series. It's been a while since the last book, so it's great to know fans are still excited for more, and more is certainly coming!
I'll be finishing the coloring of Volume 1 over the next few months, and then it's on to Volume 3!! Visit runnersuniverse.com and sign up for the mailing list to be notified when the new story arc starts posting later in 2018!
For anyone who missed the campaign, you can order the new color edition of Runners Volume 1: Bad Goods, as well as Volume 2: The Big Snow Job, from my runnersuniverse.com Store. Both books are available in PDF, paperback, and hardcover (limited quantities) editions. A limited number of reward items, like prints and character cards, will also be available.
And I'll see you all at runnersuniverse.com for Volume 3!! Thanks again!!
Update 5-30-18: International Shipping Bonuses: I know international shipping costs are a bit of a deterrent. Paying $24 shipping for a single book is a real gut-punch. I can’t do anything about the cost, but I'd like to make that bitter pill a little easier to swallow. So for international backers, I will make this offer: back the campaign at either the Vol 1 Paperback Signed level ($25) or the Vol 1 Hardcover Signed level ($30), and I will automatically include the 3 prints and 7 character cards FOR FREE during fulfillment! So you'll be paying around $50, including the shipping, but at least you'll get the $50 tier of rewards. I hope this takes some of the sting off of the high shipping costs. (Unfortunately, I can’t extend this offer to pledges for both books, since the two books alone comes out to 3 lb, but the extras would push the weight into the 4 lb cost.)
"Aliens, Smugglers, Pirates. And they're the GOOD guys."
Hi there! I'm Sean Wang and I've worked as a writer and artist on comics like Tick and Arthur (New England Comics) and Meltdown (Image Comics). But I'm best known for my creator-owned sci-fi series Runners...
Runners is a fun sci-fi action comedy about a crew of alien smugglers led by reluctant captain Roka Nostaco and his acerbic co-pilot Ril Mar. They're joined by two pirates, jokey sharpshooter Cember Koji and former mob enforcer Bennesaud. There's Bocce, a humanoid with a shape-shifting energy arm, and Sky, a mysterious alien girl with some unusual powers of her own. The series follows their exploits as they struggle to complete hazardous intergalactic runs while constantly hounded by pirates, bounty hunters, police, and the occasional conscience.
Runners Vol 1: Bad Goods, originally came out as a black-and-white book to much critical acclaim. It focuses on one particular run for the mob that spirals out of control, including shootouts with pirates, dogfights with bounty hunters, and an all-out, three-way ship, cycle, and foot chase through the streets of an alien space station.
It was followed by Runners Vol 2: The Big Snow Job, which found the crew taking on a seemingly trivial job on a frozen planet that turned out to be more than they bargained for, forcing them to deal with a hostile native population, a band of evil mercenaries, a mob power play, and a series of treacherous double-crosses. Like Volume 1, it received excellent reviews, but unlike the first book, the second was in full color.
To fit the new and ongoing aesthetic of the series, I am now going back and coloring Volume 1, and I’m hoping comic and sci-fi fans will help me fund the printing of the book here on Kickstarter.
This new version of an old favorite will consist of:
- Paperback or Kickstarter exclusive hardcover
- 176 pages, with the entire story newly colored
- The very first 7-page short story
- Sketchbook pages
- Bonus content new to the color edition
And these are the reward tiers:
Shipping will be added to reward tiers based on country during checkout. Unfortunately, international shipping is very expensive and there isn’t really anything I can do about that. But I do ship worldwide if you are willing to pay the shipping. Remember: digital files are always an option in those cases to avoid international shipping costs, and digital versions of both volumes are available!
The following additional items can be added on to reward tiers:

I did the first two books in my spare time, which made it hard to really build momentum. I am now planning to do the series full-time until the entire story is told. At this point I have plotted out the entire remainder of the series, including every major plot turn and character arc.
Additionally, Volume 3 is already fully scripted and ready to go (after a concepting phase). New pages will start posting on runnersuniverse.com later in 2018. I have a LOT more planned for the series and will be producing it on a much more regular and consistent schedule going forward.
If you're still on the fence, please check out the series at www.runnersuniverse.com, where both books are available in webcomic form. And here are a few quotes from comic professionals and reviewers:
"Runners is the best science fiction adventure I have read in years. It has wonderfully fleshed out characters, a terrific story, and great action sequences." --Stan Sakai; Usagi Yojimbo
"Runners is a truly fun and beautifully illustrated alien rag-tag space smuggler comic that feels as comforting as any of your favorite sci-fi-mythos while still being something unique in its own galaxy frontier." -- David Petersen; Mouse Guard
"Sean Wang's impressive art demonstrates the glorious imagination and colorful detail you want in a science fiction adventure. His exotic aliens make for a visual feast. If the Star Wars cantina customers took on Firefly-like mercenary jobs, you'd have Runners." --Johanna Draper Carlson; www.comicsworthreading.com
"One of the best comic book universes doesn’t belong to DC, Marvel or even Archie… it belongs to Sean Wang’s incredible series, ‘Runners’!" Since I first read the original, I have championed 'Runners' as the best independent comic ever produced. It's beautifully drawn and written with so much passion and charm." -- Matt Herring; www.secretidentitypodcast.com
Thanks for checking out my Kickstarter page and I hope you'll consider supporting Runners Vol 1: Bad Goods IN COLOR!!
Risks and challenges
All the story content has long since been created in black-and-white, and I am currently just coloring the pages, so there is no risk of the project not being completed. All that remains to be done after the coloring is the layout work and some new bonus material.
I successfully fulfilled my previous Kickstarter project for Runners Vol 2, to the enthusiastic satisfaction of all my backers, and I do not anticipate any issues in being able to do the same with Vol 1.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
