Criptiques is a groundbreaking new book of essays by disabled authors exploring the often overlooked, provocative sides of disability. While there's a dynamic and thriving disability arts culture, there remains a lack of literature devoted to spotlighting the many voices of the disabled community. This important anthology seeks to help rectify this problem by providing the much needed space for compelling, thought-provoking discourse on disability.
We're asking for your help in launching this important project because we believe our experiences as disabled people are valuable, meaningful and vastly underrepresented in contemporary media.
We're very excited to deliver this collection of essays from an incredibly talented group of authors. The disabled community is diverse and multifaceted and this is reflected in our contributors. Their backgrounds include filmmaking, writing, burlesque, activism, teaching, standup comedy and much more.
Criptiques is needed because there's nothing else out there quite like this. The book intentionally eschews traditional, stereotypical conceptions of disability while exploring themes of identity, sexuality, disability/crip culture, parenting, and ableism. Taking a cue from the disability rights slogan "Nothing about us without us," Criptiques illuminates and analyzes the disability experience from writers with firsthand knowledge.
This book is for people invested in crip culture, the ones just discovering it, and those completely unfamiliar with the term.
$6500 - eBook -REACHED!
If we reach a total of $6500, we will be able to convert Criptiques into one or more ebook formats. This will increase accessibility for people with visual impairments who use digital screen readers, and is also a nice option for those who like ebooks.
Additionally, if we reach this goal, we will give anyone who pledged at the $25 level the option to choose their preferred format (either print or ebook). Higher donation levels will receive both format.
$8500 - Audiobook
If we reach a total of $8500, we will be able to create an audiobook recording of Criptiques. Like the ebook, this format increases also accessibility and lets you get your aural crip on.
If we reach this goal, those who pledged at the $25 level will have the option of choosing the audiobook as their preferred format, and higher levels will get their choice of two of the three formats (paper, ebook, or audio).
We have a growing number of talented contributors from various backgrounds, interests and perspectives. They include:

Risks and challenges
Not-So-Risky Business: Our only risk is not securing funding, which leaves us unable to fund the book design, purchase of ISBNs and printing. If we don't reach our goal there is a high risk of us getting a major case of The Sads. We really want to get this incredible book out to you! Aside from that, this is a very straightforward project that with securement of funding will be successful.
Challenges: This is a collaborative project with many authors so collecting submissions, editing and formatting by an exact deadline is tricky. We are aiming for a release date of autumn 2013, but also recognize that some of our writers need an accommodation of additional time to polish their essays in order to present their best work. We'll keep our funders regularly updated with the status of the book launch as we can't wait to share it with you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
