From the stage to the pages of a comic book! Created by legendary Top Cow founder/artist Marc Silvestri and musician/singer Emily Lazar, September Mourning is a unique character who lives in multiple worlds and media: a rock band, social media, and now a comic book series!
Top Cow is proud to bring you a comic book that promises to rock your world. September Mourning features a lead character who finds herself split between worlds. She is a half-human, half-reaper hybrid who helps souls complete tasks they left unfinished before they died.
Standing against her are the forces of Fate, who seems to have turned against humanity, no longer maintaining the balance between good and bad souls. To bring the comic book story about a strong female character to life, Top Cow has brought together an impressive all-female creative team: co-creator Emily Lazar, who plays September on stage and is the guiding voice for all things September Mourning, including the comic book.
Writer Mariah McCourt, the New York Times bestselling author who has written the True Blood graphic novels and the comic book series Emily and the Strangers, acted as an editor for IDW Publishing and Vertigo, and collaborated with George R.R. Martin, Anne Rice, and Neil Gaiman. Artist Sumeyye Kesgin, who is behind the breathtaking art in Top Cow’s Rise of the Magi series. With a wonderful story and an amazingly talented cohort of creators, September Mourning has all the elements to be a long-lasting comic book series. This is your chance to be there from the beginning!
WHAT'S THE STORY?
September Mourning has no past that she can remember, only a strange and shadowy present filled with the voices of the dead. Turned into a unique hybrid by the former Reaper of the lonely, injured and abused, September Mourning is the only human/reaper to exist.
Her powers come with a beautiful skullfly tattoo on her neck, along with twisting dreams and visions of a Dark Man who is always looking for her and sending out minions to try and discover where she is.
Tasked with reaping the souls of the “worthless” by her mysterious tattoo, September hides and protects them, until she can help them realize the last thing they had left undone in life. Whether it’s aiding souls to expose abusers, find lost loves, or settle old debts, in each case September is guided by voice of the Skullfly, which only she can hear.
Meanwhile in another world, a place between called Mortem, Fate resides in a tower of darkness and stone. Its minion, The Dark Man, hunts September, who is unknowingly keeping Fate from feeding on enough souls to accomplish his master plan. At first, Fate’s ultimate goal is a mystery, until it finally becomes horrifyingly clear: Fate wants the world to end and will stop at nothing to force it into ultimate ruin. Our story takes place in two worlds: Covington, the city where September resides, and Mortem, the space between living and dying, a shadow world of burnt out building husks and trapped souls. Souls trapped in Mortem cannot move on and, if they are not released, will be stuck there permanently. In the Hotel Sanctuary, September keeps souls deemed “worthless,” as she struggles to do what is right, caught between forces she cannot control. September is a caretaker, balancing light and dark. She will not allow Fate, The Dark Man, or any of his other reapers to end the world without a fight.
She meets friends and enemies along the way who help and hinder her quest. There is Claire, a young blind teenager who can “see” Reapers and read their ancient language. She seeks out September when she finds the Book of Fate, a book that tells something of September’s past and is a direct line to the Reaper who made her what she is today. She also holds the information about the Key, a special soul that can defeat Fate’s plan and change the course of the world. There is also Daniel, an immortal sorcerer who tries to help lost souls. Daniel has been trying to piece together Fate’s plan for over 200 years and seeks out September once he discovers she may be the key to it all. One of the lost souls Daniel helps is Pat, a Civil War soldier Daniel was unable to save and has now become a “jumper,” a soul merged with the dark matter of another reaper (in this case, Rasper) who can leap from person to person. Pat is at least half-mad, but is loyal to Daniel and helps him whenever he can. He is an advisor to September but has his own agenda, putting the reliability of his advice into question. Rasper knows about Fate’s plan but never reveals it directly.
ALL FEMALE CREATIVE TEAM
This isn't your typical comic book project and so it’s not following the typical comic book distribution process. The print versions of the Kickstarter issues will ONLY be available to Kickstarter backers. These will be clearly marked with a Kickstarter logo and will NOT be available for purchase outside of this Kickstarter. We love comics and we know you do too. There are a lot of music fans who'd normally not pay to read a comic book. With your help, we will able to able to give away the digital version of these comics for FREE in 2016. Help us reach the masses and share our love for comic books and September Mourning’s story with everyone.
WHERE’S THE MONEY GOING TO GO?
The money you’ll be pledging will go primarily to pay the creative team and the cost of printing the book and merchandise. If our original goal is met, more tier rewards will be added as the pledge drive moves forward, as well as stretch goals that will include additional issues of September Mourning.
September Mourning revives the concept of rock star meets superhero. If Marilyn Manson and Lady Gaga had a kid, it would be September Mourning, who also cites influences as varied as David Bowie, Motionless in White, KISS, Paramore and My Chemical Romance. “For me, the project is a story, a theatrical art piece,” September explains. “Music is a piece of the backbone, but for this to work, it has to include the imagery and the narrative all symbiotically linked into the whole. Music taps into your innermost being. There’s something very intimate and personal about it.”
September Mourning carries positive passions into its music, which is often operatic, but also completely rock ‘n’ roll in all its majestic glory.
Having toured with Marilyn Manson, September Mourning has already built up an impressive fan base, which she calls her “Children of Fate,” constantly encouraging them to have “the courage to embrace their passion… to allow yourself to follow your heart and not be a slave to your fears. To know that the only boundaries that exist in our lives are the ones we allow.”
