The Story

Soon after Jane’s arrival in the city, she begins to see people she thinks she knows from her past. She calls them her ghosts. Why is she seeing them?  What do they want from her?  And, what does she want from them?

"Ghosts of New York" is a short film that looks at the sometimes difficult task of letting go of the past, and of what is comfortable, and trusting one's self to take that next step forward.

Based on the short story "Ghosts of New York City" by Homa Zaryouni, the film follows one young woman as she recounts her own journey and tries to answer the question, does she believe in ghosts?.

We *STILL* need YOUR help!

Even though we've hit our goal, it doesn't mean we want to stop!  Thanks to the generous support of our backers, exceeding our goal will allow us to do even more great things with the project and continue to elevate to even higher levels!

The heavy lifting has already been done.  The film has already been shot and editing is underway.  To show how strongly we believe in the project, we covered all production expenses for principal photography before reaching out for your support.  And, while we are very excited with how the film has turned out, we still have a long way to go.  We are now at the point where we need to add all the finishing touches that will help elevate this film and bring it to the level at which it will be ready for film festivals and screenings.

With your help we can make it to the finish line!

What your donations will go towards.

  • Sound Mixing & Sound Design - The sound of the film is vital to the story we are telling.  To help us deliver this, we are fortunate to be working with Emmy winner (MOZART IN THE JUNGLE) and Academy Award nominee (BIRDMAN OR (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE), Thomas Varga.

  • Score (*UPDATED*) - We are very excited to announce that the score will be composed and recorded by Andrew Freedman. Andrew is an award-winning musician and composer whose most recent film collaboration, "Phenomenal Woman," is currently making the rounds on the festival circuit.
  • Original Music (*UPDATED*) - We are also extremely happy to be teaming up with Noble Steed Music, who will be helping bring in some great original music for the film.
  • Color Correction (*UPDATED*) - For color correction, we are now able to bring the finished film to Harbor Picture Company and work with colorist Roman Hankewycz.  Roman has worked on such acclaimed projects as PUBLIC MORALS, THE ADDERALL DIARIES, and A MOST VIOLENT YEAR.
  • Final Mastering - Once the film is finished, we will need to create a "master" of the film, as well as various formats needed for festivals and screenings.
  • Graphic Design/Artwork (*NEW*) - We can now hire a graphic designer to design and produce all the promotional items for the project.  This will include posters, postcards, DVD artwork, press kit, as well as a special gift we are putting together.

  • Festival Submissions - Submitting to film festivals costs money.  Submission fees can cost anywhere from as little as $20 to as much as $80.  The higher profile the festival, the more expensive the submission fee.  In addition, most festivals also require you to mail a DVD copy of the film.  We will be looking to submit to 30-50 festivals around the world!

Score & Music (*UPDATED*) - To compliment the beautiful images we've shot, we will record an original score for the film. In addition, we will need to license a song for the end credits.

Risks and challenges

As we've said - the hard part is taken care of and the film has been shot!

The biggest challenge we faced was shooting a very ambitious schedule over two days, running around Manhattan and Brookyn, NY.

In then end, the shoot entailed:
17 scenes
16 locations
8 company moves (not including "mini-moves" of a couple blocks from time to time)
2 subway car scenes (on operating subway cars)
2 subway platform scenes (on functioning subway platforms)
All done in 28 hours over two days!

None of it would have been possible without the talent and effort of everyone involved!
