About this project
The world of publishing is changing rapidly. In today's new digital world, the burden on authors has shifted to require more self-marketing and social networking than ever before. What's more, with the ever-rising popularity of e-books, the entire publishing industry is being turned on its head. Now, in order to land that much-coveted agent, authors need to do more than send out query letters. They need to prove that their book can sell through actual sales reports.
Recognizing this, I self-published my first novel, Nevermore, in June of 2013 as an e-book through 11 major retailers and as a limited edition paperback through Amazon. You can find it on Amazon here. Nevermore is the first in the six-book "Poe" series, the second installment of which I intend to release in June of 2014.
Self-publishing is not an easy task. It demands a great deal of extra time from the author because they are responsible for their own marketing, and it demands a very large budget to purchase ISBNs, commission cover designs, order print books, and buy advertisement and all-important professional book reviews.
"Poe" is a series that deserves the attention a successful self-publishing campaign can grant it. It is a thriller series written by a young, female author, already placing it in the 'underdog' category in the genre. What's more, the books are highly character-driven with protagonists and antagonists that are more than three-dimensional: they are living and breathing. Not only are these characters written to be very real, but though they battle a supernatural curse which brings the works of Edgar Allan Poe to life, they also represent real-world problems. As a writer, I believe that we must be honest about the dark corners of our society and I am not afraid to show that. In the first two installments of "Poe" alone, the characters deal with depression, suicide, domestic violence, rape, insanity, grief, and villains that could easily be your next-door neighbor. Chanticleer Book Reviews and Media gave Nevermore a glowing review, highlighting some of these strong points. You can read it here.
Rest in Peace This Kickstarter project will fund the publication and a minimal marketing budget for Rest in Peace, the second installment in this powerhouse series. Rest in Peace picks up where the first book left off with Elenora Allison Poe, the series' tragic heroine and the sole direct descendant of Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is twenty-four years old, drowning in debt and depression, and very alone, having been orphaned at the age of two and raised in an abusive household. Suffering from insomnia and PTSD, Poe kept everyone at arm's length until she met homicide detective Caleb Frost, a man just as broken as her. Poe, with the help of Frost, races against time and death to save those she loves from a terrible family curse that takes the form of Edgar Allan Poe's most haunting tales. In Rest in Peace, Frost and Poe are still recovering from the tragedies they survived in the first book, both emotionally and physically. As they struggle to rebuild their relationship from ashes, Poe discovers that she is being stalked by the man who tortured her seven years ago and is swept into a maelstrom of instability and paranoia. Without Frost's protection, Poe quickly loses her already shaky grip on her sanity as with each passing moment the inevitable reunion with her tormentor draws nearer. For free access to Chapter One of Nevermore and Rest in Peace, as well as exclusive quotes and teasers from both books and my other works in progress, check out rachelmmartens.com.
With the funds from this campaign, I can give Rest in Peace the book launch it deserves, as well as purchase advertising that will help bring more readers to this series.
What does backing this campaign mean for you? Whether you're interested in supporting the mystery/suspense/thriller/horror genres, raising awareness about taboo social issues, granting exposure to an underdog writer, or promoting self-publishing as a launchpad for any writer, this is the campaign for you. Your pledge means your support for any of these great causes. Plus, you can earn signed copies of Nevermore and Rest in Peace, as well as a spot on the acknowledgment page of Rest in Peace or even the use of your name for a character in a future "Poe" installment.
Risks and challenges
The risks in any project like this one include delays related to professional reviews, cover design and distribution. Furthermore, self-publishing poses the risk of not earning back the money that you spent on publishing and marketing. I plan to work to avoid delays by commissioning reviews and cover designs well ahead of schedule and continuing to work with Bookbaby, a self-publishing company that helped me streamline the e-book distribution process for "Nevermore". As for breaking even, I hope that the advertising I will be able to purchase thanks to this campaign and the small following I already have from my first book will help me make this publication a financial success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
