'The 39 Steps' is an exciting, highly successful West-End London comedy stage show, adapted from the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock and the famous novel by John Buchan. The novelty of the production has just four actors recreating the epic-scale of the source material by acting out well over a hundred characters in a fast-paced, wacky-witted, quick-change scenario.
The London production is currently touring the UK mainland and our modest, new production company, 'Kandu Theatre', has landed the amateur performance rights to stage our version of the show here in Belfast!
WHO WE ARE
The group focuses on getting a lot out of very little. Our creative force currently involves a small gathering of multi-talented young people between the ages of 18-30. The majority of us wish to fulfil careers in the performing arts sector. This production is our blood, sweat and tears attempt at getting another step closer. As such, we devote much of whatever free time we have to our passion at zero monetary profit (circumstance, not choice). This categorises us as 'amateur'... but our attitudes are most professional to our cause.
We encounter no prejudice in both our working and personal relationships. Our cast (who double as their own crew!) hail from any community. We do not question, or care, as to which. The only thing that matters is how entertaining one can be.
We are Kandu Theatre and we have an overwhelming need to entertain.
We are staging two performances at The Strand Arts Centre (The Strand Cinema) on August 28th & 29th, 2013. Since this is our first and rather ambitious venture, we require getting to our feet with funding to cover various production costs.
These expenditures include
- Performance fees
- Venue fees
- Rehearsal fees
- Sound & lighting
- Set & props
- Costumes, hair and make-up, etc.
- Print costs
- Unexpected overheads
Please help us reach our potential.
Risks and challenges
'The 39 Steps' is the inaugural production for 'Kandu Theatre' - a new, non-profit Theatre Company based in Newtownabbey/Belfast. We are comprised of a small selection of multi-talented performers with heart-strong determination to bring exciting and off-the-wall material to our city.
We seek to stage works non-typical of the local scene. Works beyond local culture. Works beyond the tired, repetitive topics oft tread. Works of mainstream, cult and somewhere in-between. Escapist works for big kids of all creeds.
It is because of our 1) 'newcomer status' and 2) desire to do the unfamiliar that some may place doubt in our capabilities and such doubts can make our production a hard sell. We have approximately 50% of sales to meet to cover our costs. Thus the challenge will be in marketing our show with strong appeal to attend.
We plan to prove our worth and attraction fundamentally via viral means. The major draw will be executed with a Facebook 'like' page featuring wacky and witty posters, photographs, and a 1-2 minute long video 'trailer' for YouTube, of which we have planned to produce over the coming weeks. (A small preview of our poster can be viewed as our project photograph).
We place much confidence in our dynamic style, married with an outrageous sense of humour to gain interest.
