About this project
Hi there, meet WOODEN PETS
“Welcome to the world of WOODEN PETS and the launch of my first product on KICKSTARTER. If you love pets, nature and Danish design – you will love these little creatures. I mix humor and creativity in order to spread joy and cosiness in everyday life”
Helena From. Industrial designer & Owner of fromHELENA
WOODEN PETS is a new line of Danish design interior products made of natural materials.
The first idea of creating these little wooden pets came to my mind when I first got my own little puppy – a sweet little French bulldog. She has so much character and charm. she can brighten up even the worst days. She is my best friend, my happy face and my little companion. I wanted to create a memory of her I could keep with me for the rest of my life. And even a product that could spread joy in others homes as well.
I wanted to design a product for your home, one that is nice to touch and look at. The product should bring happiness and joy in the sometimes busy life, and it should be filled with personality and creativity just like my own dog – and all other dogs. Furthermore I wanted to explore and show my passion for Danish design traditions and my “work motto”: play!.
In my development of the french bulldog, people asked me to do a pug as well as this breed is a bit like the french bulldog. The french bulldog and pug are well loved breeds. Known for being active, intelligent, and affectionate, they have made their way into mainstream society. It seems many can’t get enough of these squat pups with expressive eyes.
Then the idea of creating a line of wooden pets evolved, and it was obvious for me to create a cat for all the cat-lovers.
The pet design is rooted in love for the Danish design traditions, nature, animals and craftsmanship, making the dog a celebration of creativity and expression. This little pet represents an appreciation for playfulness at all stages of life. It could be a perfect gift for the playful soul or just someone who needs cheering up.
The coolest thing about these designer pets is that their head is loose - so it can be turned in different directions so you can choose what mood your pet is in. So you can make it beg or even sulk in the corner if you have been away for too long. This is a designer pet that will make you smile for sure, like the real pets do.
All the animals are carefully turned and assembled with leather cuttings that bring the wood pieces to life. Composed of simple rounded shapes, each animal have natural wood finishes — the wood grain gives texture and depth to the sculptures, while maintaining its smooth surface.
Each animal has soul and a sense of humour. Perfect as a gift to whoever loves nature and small joyful design objects. Choose between smoked or natural oak to add a little spice to your collection.
But now I have reached the point where I need some help and support form you – Kickstarter - to bring these little wood creatures to life. I only have one chance – so support my project and get your own little wooden pet.

The design process
I’ve spent a lot of time on concept development trying to find the right expression and shape. I wanted to create a design with simple shapes yet a joyful expression that could show my love for Danish design, nature, animals and craftsmanship. Furthermore I have spent a lot of time in the studio on getting the details right and making tons of 3D models for the wood turner to work with.
Good wood turners in DK are not easy to find, but I have found a very skilled wood turner; Rasmus Pedersen from Woodturning (www.woodturning.dk) - near Vejle who has helped me doing a lot of prototyping to get the precise dimensions and shapes together. It takes great precision when the wood is turned and polished, as the dimensions need to be exact so the parts fit precisely. Composed of simple rounded shapes, each animal have natural wood finishes — the wood grain gives texture and depth to the sculptures, while maintaining its smooth surface.
Afterwards the parts are carefully assembled with leather cuttings and metal studs that bring the wooden pieces to life. Each animal has soul and a sense of humour. This is a line of designer pets that have soul and a sense of humor - they will make you smile for sure, like the real pets do.

Risks and challenges
Hopefully all stages are covered, but with any product-manufacturing project, there can be unforeseen challenges and risks.
Manufacturing: I have teamed up with a very skilled wood turner in DK, who has helped me getting the right proportions and materials for the different animals. The first 300 will be made by him by hand and I my self will do the rest of the assembly – so of course there can be some unforeseen delays or challenges. But I feel comfortable with this as we have done it before with other wood-animals, and we both have great experience.
When scaling up the production I have teamed up with a manufacturer who has a lot of experience with woodturning and woodcraft to minimize the risk of delays and to ensure the best quality. We have built test prototypes with our manufacturer and they fully understand our product, specifications and production timeline.
shipping a large amount of orders in a short period of time can often be a little risky. But I have teamed up with a good partner of mine, who has a big shipping set up and lot of experience dealing with all kinds of shipping. There has also been built in extra time for both manufacturing and the shipping process so I’m confident we will ship by the projected dates. I’ll always keep you informed if things take longer than planned.
I thank you in advance for your support so we can start making large runs of WOODEN PETS and all enjoy the little wooden joyful petsLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
