The Narrative Game System has one goal: for you and your friends to tell an amazing story together. The rules are no longer the master of your universe! NGS gives you a framework for your own story and imagination to come alive.

The Narrative Game System follows these 3 simple core principles. These principles guide every aspect of our design and inform the choices we make.
- Collaboration: This game is about narrative collaboration at every single stage. From character creation to the story itself, and even the awarding of experience, the GM and the players will work together. The story is everyone’s responsibility, not just the GM.
- Narrative: The story and the characters taking part in it are paramount. The advancement of that story in a fun, engaging and dynamic way is the most important goal. If rules ever conflict with the evolution of a captivating story, then the rules are wrong and the story is right.
- Empowerment: The game itself offers simple directions for the creation of your narrative and your characters, but it’s a tool set, not a text book. You are as much the designer every time you sit down at the table as we are and we want to empower you in that role.
In the Narrative Game System, characters start with their story. When it comes time for mechanics, everything revolves around three ideas: Narrative Abilities, Mechanical Priorities and our exciting Narrative Accolade system.
Narrative Abilities are traits characters have that set them aside from other creatures, groups or individuals in the world. Some Narrative Abilities might be shared by others of the same race or who have similar training; others could be completely unique; granted by powerful items or as boons from potent beings.
With Narrative Abilities, there are no mechanical descriptions or exact definitions of what they are capable of. This is what sets NGS apart. Instead, NGS offers broad descriptions and advice on how your character might attempt to use these abilities to overcome the various challenges they encounter in their story. The reach and scope of each ability can be molded and changed to fit any world or setting, from the gritty two-fisted action of pulp noir to the highest flying heroes of the golden age.
Most actions in the Narrative Game System are decided by cleverly using your Narrative Abilities and describing how you want to effect the story; no roll necessary. When you do need to roll, its a fast and easy process of one die and one bonus based on where you have set your priorities. If you want to be a potent physical threat, you are! If you want to be brilliant, you are! You don't make that choice ten or a hundred times over the coarse of character creation; you make it once and you are done.
Our goal with the mechanics was to allow you to decide anything with a simple roll. This keeps the mechanics light enough that they fall into the background so that all you focus on is your character and the story.
Our exciting Narrative Accolade system lets you collaborate like never before. Everyone at the table both shapes the narrative and rewards each other for a job well done. Each player at the table can award other players with Narrative Accolades whenever they do anything exciting, engaging, crazy, fun, funny, amazing, unique or whatever that player likes. These accolades can then be used for experience or to allow the player to take control of the story.
Narrative Accolades ensure that both the story and the rewards are now in the hands of everyone at the table.
Principle writing and design on the Narrative Game System is already completed. All pledgers will immediately receive our Quick Start Guide featuring a draft set of rules and a full adventure to experience NGS firsthand. We want your continuing feedback throughout the Kickstarter. This is your chance to get involved so that the game itself is a product of working together.
With a successful crowd funding campaign, we are set to bring a world-class group of artists and illustrators to the project. Art of all styles and techniques will be featured in the book to help your imagination soar. The initial funding goal includes the cost for artwork, graphic design, layout and promotional materials.
The NGS book will be available in full-color PDF, softcover and special edition hardback. All books will be at least 100 pages (with the possibility of adding more content through Stretch goals - See below). This book will contain everything you need for a game of NGS - both as a player and as a GM. The rules-light nature of the game means we don't have to waste time with table after table telling you how hard wood is, or how dark it is when its dark; instead, we focus on providing you with ideas for a diversity of settings and worlds. We give you plenty of advice and guidance on how you can customize and shape the stories you tell to make the narrative your own.
All pledgers will immediately receive our Quick Start Guide as well as a full setting and adventure. We have fantastic pledge levels available and we want to offer you the best experience for your pledged dollar.

Early Bird Tiers
Early Bird tiers give you the most bang for each dollar pledged. There is a limited number of slots for these special tiers and once they are gone, they are gone forever.
The PDF version of the game is the full-color file we utilize to print the book itself. It contains all the art, advice, guidance, mechanics and rules, just with 100% less paper. All pledgers of $5 or more will receive the PDF copy of the Narrative Game System book when it is available. It gives you everything you need for years of narrative fun.
The Softcover Edition is the full-color book, perfect bound. Pledgers at the Scout and Advocate level will receive this version of the book.
Special Edition Hardback
The Special Edition Hardback book is full-color and is signed by our entire design team. Pledgers at the Hero level or above will receive this version of the book.
This NGS Bookmark allows you to save your place when you are inspired to integrate something into your next game. You never know when lightning will strike! This bookmark comes free with every Special Edition Hardback version of the book.
Narrative Accolade Chips
These beautifully printed game pieces allow you to hand out your Narrative Accolades with authority. In the Narrative Game System, each player can award experience to others for amazing or memorable actions. Now you can award that Narrative Accolade in style (preferably with a friendly toss instead of a throw at the eye). These exclusive game pieces are only available during our Kickstarter campaign. The Narrative Accolade come in sets of 20. Each set consists of 5 differing border colors (for up to 5 players, 4 chips of each color).
Those who pledge at the $120 level can send us a photograph and we will have one of our artists render the backer directly into the book. Will you be a brave knight, a deadly gunslinger, a fearsome space pirate or something else entirely? The choice is yours!
Those who pledge $150 help us create the game in a unique way. This tier is limited to only fifteen backers, and each backer will work with our design team to create a world of their own imagination. Whatever can be dreamed of (PG-13 or less), will become a reality and a permanent part of the NGS book bearing their name. Everyone who receives a copy of the book in any format will have this additional setting included.
The following Add-Ons can be added to any order of the Scout level or above. Simply add this amount to your pledge and include the items you would like in your comments.
- $2 - Additional Bookmark
- $15 - Those pledging at the HERO level (which includes the Hardback book) or above may add additional copies of the softcover book for this price (Limit 5).
- $27 - Additional set (Qty. 20) of Narrative Accolade chips.
- $20 - International Shipping on any single physical book (single book, rewards such as bookmarks, and Narrative Accolades are not counted). Add $5 for the shipping of every book purchased separately beyond the first.
- $20 - Those pledging at the SCOUT level or above may select this Add-On for a copy of On A Roll: Level Up Your RPG. This great book contains theories, wisdom, tips and advice for players and game runners of all experience levels. The Book is included and shipped with the book(s) coming from your pledge. High-Res NGS Cover Art Exclusive Wallpaper
This is a high resolution image of our beautiful cover art by Brett Barkley transformed into Wallpaper for your personal PC. This wallpaper will be available for download to our backers immediately upon reaching this milestone.

High-Res Pax Victoria Digital Map
All of our backers receives the Quick Start Guide as well as one of the settings to be featured in NGS, Spaceship Roma, and an adventure for that setting absolutely free. The adventure, The Edge of Rome sends the brave PCs to explore a mystery at the far reaches of Roman Space. Their best asset on this mission is the Pax Victoria, their personal starship. The map for this starship will become available for download upon reaching this milestone.

Low Risk: The principal design work is completed. This project will be finalized regardless of the outcome of the Kickstarter. Kickstarter allows us to bring the project to the next level, including all of the high quality art and design you deserve.
