Thanks so much everyone!
Now that this crazy roller coaster known as our Kickstarter project is over, we just wanted to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone who supported A New Friend for Sally. Over the next couple we'll be working as hard as we can to finish the book so that we can send it off to the printers as soon as possible.
In the meantime please follow us on Facebook for updates, and check out our Instagram for lots of fun behind the scenes stuff. If you're reading this after the campaign has finished and you're interested in picking up a copy of the book, please head on over to our website.

Make an appearance in the book!
Hooray we've managed to hit our funding goal! And to celebrate this exciting occasion, we've introduced an exciting new ADD ON. For an extra $50 - get your likeness (or the likeness of the person you're buying the book for) drawn into the book! For more information please click here.
A New Friend for Sally tells the story of a cheerful little girl that because she lives on a farm, doesn't have any friends. One day her dad heads into the city and Sally asks that he bring home an animal for her to play with. Unfortunately instead of picking something cute like a pony, her dad brings home a chicken… the one animal that (SPOILER!) Sally's terrified of! What follows is a heartwarming story about friendship and acceptance with the lesson to not judge a book by its cover.
Publishing a kid's book has always been a dream of ours, and we're extremely proud of what we've been able to accomplish with A New Friend for Sally. It combines all the things we loved growing up reading children's books; beautiful art, lyrical rhymes and most importantly, a nice moral at the end of it. A New Friend for Sally would make the perfect gift for that special child in your life.
Our goal is to raise $5000 in order to print a 40-page hardcover book with a dust jacket. The dimensions of the book will be 8" x 10" printed on high quality paper stock. The book is already written and completely illustrated and with your help, we’ll be able to get this book printed and out into the world soon!
"A New Friend for Sally is a great book for children to read. It is filled with vivid and colorful pictures. The text is filled with rhyming words that help promote and facilitate phonemic awareness. Additionally, it teaches children an important lesson: Things might seem scary at first, but once you get to know it, you’ll find that you love it.
As an elementary school library teacher, I am fortunate enough to be able to share my love of reading to my students through daily read-alouds. A New Friend for Sally would definitely be a book I’d share with my students."—Evelyn Chan, P.S. 69, Kindergarten - Grade 5 Teacher
"It's a sweet story, and the illustrations are gorgeous." —Gene Luen Yang, author of American Born Chinese, the first graphic novel to be nominated for the National Book Award
"My five year old LOVED A New Friend for Sally! She laughed out loud at the adorable illustrations and I loved the great lesson that was tucked into a sweet story." —Jenny Solar, Co-founder thehappyfamilymovement.com
How does Kickstarter work?
Don't worry if you've never used Kickstarter before - it's actually really straightforward. The way Kickstarter works is all-or-nothing; if we're able to hit our goal of $5000, then you and all the other backers receive whichever reward tiers you chose to back us at. If on the other hand, we're unable to hit the goal by our deadline (July 3rd), then you don't get charged and we don't get a single cent.
Think of it this way, if only 10 people back our project at the $25 level, that means we've only raised $250. While it's awesome that we're able to find 10 people willing to support us, unfortunately $250 isn't enough for us to print the book - since the minimum print quantity is 500 copies. This is why it's important to back us if you believe in A New Friend for Sally, otherwise there's a possibility this book may not happen!
About the creators
Lora Lee is an adjunct professor at Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford. She teaches Drawing for Animation, 3D Maya and Digital Illustration. Aside from teaching she also works as a designer, illustrator and animator. Amongst her work includes illustrating numerous book covers such as the Jim Morgan series by James Matlack Raney, The Sons of Feral Sods by Ron Reaser and the Forging of a Knight trilogy by Hugo V. Negron.
In addition to being a comics creator, David Tang is an art director with over 10 years experience in magazine and iPad app design. Some of his previous clients include: Popular Mechanics, Australian Men's Health, Australian Prevention, Fast Company, Nintendo Force Magazine, Total Girl, Wired (UK), Marie Claire, WWE Kids, Jetstar Magazine and Tiger Tales.
Lora and David actually met back in 2009 when they took part in a reality TV show in Singapore (seriously!). The show was a lot like The Apprentice except with more creatively themed challenges (design a hotel room, create an anime, design an outfit for DKNY etc). David ended up winning the TV show and Lora was one of the final two runner ups.
Risks and challenges
Even before launching this Kickstarter, A New Friend for Sally was already finished and ready to go the printers. If we're successful, all we would need to do is print the book, produce work for the higher end reward tiers (prints, original illustrations etc) and then ship them off.
We've managed to find an extremely reliable printer whose printed many children's books in the past. Of course, sometimes there's a chance of printing errors, but we will go through and ensure that each book is of the highest standard.
The real challenge comes down to fulfilment. Since the author and the artist don't live in the same state, sending out the rewards will be the sole responsibility of the artist (and her poor fiancé). Having said that, we are confident that we will be able to deliver all that's promised in a timely fashion.
In the instance that there are any unanticipated printing problems or shipping delays, we'll be sure to keep our backers updated.
