Between Friends and Family

Hello there!

If you just found out about this campaign and are bummed because the goal has already been met--don't fret! My goal was based on the minimum amount I'd need to complete the film, but there are lots of ways to put additional pledges to good use (transcript for subtitles, additional hard drives, color correction, etc.). Check out the rewards and see if there's anything appealing. And thanks for your interest in my film!

About

In 2008, Mel and Carey asked me to be their sperm donor and it changed my life. I was flattered, curious about what their kids might look like, eager to help, but wary of overstepping my bounds. As a film student, I thought the situation was interesting enough to document on video and completed How to Make a Heartbeat in the spring of 2009.

Later that year I attended festival screenings where I met and talked to other people who were trying to find a friend to be their donor, who were asked to be a donor, who were curious about what my relationship with Mel and Carey would be like once they became mothers. So I kept recording.

I interviewed Mel and Carey about their decision to start a family, the birth of their daughter, the second-parent adoption process, North Carolina's retraction of same-sex, second-parent adoptions, and Mel and Carey's experiences alternating the birth and social mom roles. Mel and Carey interviewed me about my decision to help and how I felt seeing their daughter for the first time, and I added moments from my personal life, like the decision to tell my parents about being a donor and the complications and eventual dissolution of my marriage.

After three years, Between Friends and Family is almost done. I just need a little help.

If I reach my goal, the money you pledge will go to:

  • Editing
  • Art design
  • Poster/postcard printing
  • DVD duplication
  • Press kits
  • Film festival submission fees

This project is not just about a lesbian family and their sperm donor, it's about the gray area between friendship and familial relations and the wonderful possibilities that arise when boundaries change.

Thank you so much for your help,

Rick
