Hello! Our names are Jessica, Lenora, Lolita, and Zoe. We are recent college graduates trying to raise money to exhibit a talented group of young artists this summer. For the concept of the show, we are exploring the concept of immortality.
The real world is simply too terrible to admit. It tells man that he is a small trembling animal who will someday decay and die. Culture changes all of this, makes man seem important, vital to the universe, immortal in some ways. - Ernst Becker
For centuries, artists have making pieces that will ultimately outlive them, and take on lives of their own. We are able to view 500 year old paintings in museums, listen to classical music on our laptops, and read new editions of novels on tablets that were initially written by hand.
But as we continue to seamlessly integrate the digital into our physical lives, we are fixated on a new meaning of immortality - whether it be the content we create on a daily basis that could very well outlive us or the advancing fields of biotechnology.
What better way to communicate these ideas than to hold an art show with tons of young artists?
There is a lot of unrealized talent in our show. With your help, we will be able to make this show completely for the artists. This means that if an artist is to sell a piece, they will get 100% of their earnings. For those who donate to the show, we will send updates with a finalized artist list, as we are still finalizing the names. The video provides a sampling of work that some of the artists in the show have made in recent years.
The opening of the show will take place on Friday June 6th at the Gowanus Loft (http://vanderbiltrepublic.com/gl). This is a beautiful, large space that we fell in love with immediately. But it's costly! We thought it was best to fill the large and airy space with tons of young talented artists rather than budget for a small windowless room. 2/3 of the funds will go to acquiring the space alone. The rest of the money will go to printing a catalogue, transporting the work, providing beverages and snacks, and inviting someone for a lecture in the space on Sunday afternoon. If you can't make it to the opening, the show will be on view all of Saturday and Sunday as well.
We hope that you believe in this show as much as we do! We hope to see you there!
Jessica, Lenora, Lolita, and Zoe.
