What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

Introducing the first consumer Real Light
system for harvesting sunshine

We all know that feeling of real sunlight and how it makes us feel. Sunlight cues special areas in the retina, which triggers the release of serotonin that puts us in a better mood, but also makes us healthier, more productive and the feeling stays long after the light is gone.

Man always tried to emulate true sunlight but it cannot be artificially produced, there is only one source to produce what we at Solros calls real light (#reallight) – the sun itself – and we decided to use it. The Solros unique mirror dish is controlled with a patented algorithm that follows the sun during the day to create optimal angle for light reflection at all times. When the sun is out, the dish reflects the sunshine onto the ends of optical fibers that then transports the light into any dark room, giving the user full spectrum sunlight in any room – perfect for those without, with few or dark windows. What you get is this – a full spectrum daylight Lightbox – with the light supplied by fiber optics:

A super important bonus, not least for users in equatorial or very hot regions – the light is transported without the excess heat that comes with direct sunlight, rendering it perfect where windows are kept to a minimum to keep the temperature down.

On our website you can find more links on the benefits of sunlight, see more images and sign up for our newsletter: www.solros.com

This is how the Solros System works:

The Solros Story

The Solros story really began in 2015, when inventor and engineer Jon Ramstedt started discussions with his friend and colleague Daniel Johansson about how to invent a sunshine harvesting and distribution system for the consumer market – they had already been developing very large systems for another company, systems that could capture and lead sunlight into any building, designed to suit large corporations. The project led to solar light setups all over the world, but for a few rich organizations. Daniel and Jon though, saw the potential huge impact a consumer product would have on the world; it could indeed become a revolutionary product that both bring Real Light to the worlds dark rooms and at the same time reduce electricity consumption, making the invention truly sustainable and future-proof.

Creating a consumer priced version of the sunshine harvesting system became the duos passion – they always wanted the technology to reach a lot more people at a fundamentally lower price – and therefore decided to start their own company. They started experimenting with a reflective disc that follows the sun and concentrates the sunbeams on to a bundle of optical fibers. After some dire prototyping and after a long search finally finding producers that could manage a high capacity yet high-quality production, they teamed up with the designers and strategists Milan Kosovic, Fredrik Bengtsson and Mathias Strömberg – a team with a background in top level product, packaging and experience design – to design and develop the first marketable products, as well as the the cutting-edge engineering company, Essiq, who's owner Jonas Sohtell now is an active partner. With this setup of people, the Solros brand, the new product designs and an easy-to-use, 100% human-centered user experience was crystallized and finally, the first Solros system is now ready for global shipment.

Let the sunshine in!

What will Solros do with the crowdfunding money?

With the money raised from this Kickstarter campaign, we can finally place an order large enough to keep prices at the level we want to – fewer systems means higher price per system as the factory needs a big commitment to deliver high quality at the right price point. Apart from this Solros will keep developing the system, the digital platform and sharing our learnings to the global sustainable and solar community.

The slightly more technical stuff

Dish: The parabolic mirror dish follows the sun with a patented algortighm so even if it's cloudy it "knows" exactly where it is. It reflects the sun perfectly on to the optic fibers. It weighs approximately 7 kg (16 pounds). The dish is powered with 12v DC. This is done by connecting the included adapter in your normal power outlet.

Cable: The 37 optical fibers that leads full spectrum sunlight to the Lightbox is encapsulated in a cable that is 15 mm (0.5 inch) and the single fibers distributes the light in a even 60 degree cone. The fibers attenuates the light so your actual light output will depend on the length of your optical fiber cable. The attenuation is 0.15 dB/m.

Lightbox: The distributor of the light is a clean, 60x60x25 cm (23.6x23.6x11.8 inches) box made of powder coated, light-weight metal and acrylic.

The light distributed: As a simple reference, we often explain that a regular modern lightbulb with 40 watt effect produce approximately 450 lumen (Solros 10000 lumen at full sunshine) and is subject to a lot of parameters. To read more about how Lumen and Lux represents light and the power of Solros offer, read up on Wikipedia here and here

The Team

Risks and challenges

The Solros system is fully functional and we have produced and tested prototypes with mock-up toolings. We also tested individual parts successfully, and have confirmed that every part can be produced at the right price according to design. All off-the-shelf parts availability have been confirmed. We have a manufacturer that can produce our products at the right cost; the next step is to produce the toolings in order to mass-produce the Solros products.

There is always a risk with complex products such as the Solros Dish and the Solros Lightbox when going to mass production status. To minimize these we are constantly evaluating prototypes and monitoring production process. With all the tests done we are confident that the offered products will be delivered and installed with full function if we reach our funding goal.

Note on international shipping: it is not possible for us to ascertain the duties and tariff policy of every nation in the world. Therefore, our price does not include the VAT or other duties that may be charged by each country when crossing its border. We encourage you to research your country's tax and import regulations before pledging.
