The Ocean is under attack! Tired of their dark home in the Deeps, the Deep Krillord and his creepy-crawly minions have invaded the Ocean! King Blubbulous has issued a call to arms, and four brave whales have answered. Their task: return the magical Blubbulous Pearls to the Ocean Outposts, restoring light to the Ocean and safety to its waters.
At it's core, The Krilling Field is a an exploration game. You and your friends play each game on a pseudo-randomized map of the ocean that gets bigger and wilder as you accomplish certain objectives, giving you a vastly different playing field for every game.
During the game, players are questing in search of Blubbulous Pearls. These can be found in the Ocean, a zone of relative safety that teems with helpful creatures, the Deeps, a dark zone of danger and uncertain fortune, and in the Munitions, a collection of trinkets and friends to help you on your way. When you find a Pearl, rush it to an Ocean Outpost, where its power will be harnessed to secure the safety of your home. Power up three Outposts, and you'll become heir to the Blubbulous Throne!
Of course, that's not all! Whales may work together as friends, but only one whale may win! There are over thirty items, powers, and adversaries at your disposal. You can use these to steal cards from other whales, entrap them, or even assasinate them! Or, if your thirst for glory runs deeper, take the Blubbulous Pearls to the Deep Krillord and usher in an age of Darkness!
Check out this high-quality gameplay explanation!
Here's how the game progresses:
Every turn starts with a player drawing two Munitions. These are your general use cards, with crazy abilities like Blinding Baleen (that keeps an opponent from discovering new areas) or outrageous ocean inhabitants like the Thieving Eel (steal a defensive card from another player). You can play as many cards as you want at any time during your turn! Then, you move your whale and do whatever your new location prompts you to do, which can be anything from going shopping to hiring spectral assassins to detonating nuclear bombs.
You know, typical ocean stuff.
From there, your turn is purely open-ended. Want to move again? Go ahead! You can discard a Munition to move as many times as you are able. Want to expand the map? Just drop a Blubbulous Pearl off at the Krilling Field, your home base that's always at the center of the ocean. Want to get crazy? Explore the Deeps, and you may find untold riches, strange new allies, or prolonged excruciating death. Feeling vengeful? Hire a swordfish to stab an opponent! Or just try and win the game by restoring magical pearls to your oceanic defensive outposts. It's up to you!
You can even play certain cards during an opponent's turn! With Battle Chest Munitions, you can turn any engagement in your favor, whether shrugging off damage with a Barnacle Barrier, reflecting an ability with a Deep-Ocean Ectoplasm, or activating a surprise psychic trap with the Mind Killer! Play your cards right, and your opponents will never know what to expect!
Well, roguelike-like doesn't sound quite as good, does it?
The main idea behind the Krilling Field is that every game is as different as it is dynamic.
You won't see every location every time! Remember that minefield that killed you last round? Well, in this round, it's a healing fissure. Remember how your buddy bought a pearl from a newt merchant? Well, that was last time. This time, that spot is home to a giant clam. It will take eight or ten games for you to find all of the Krilling Field's hidden nooks!
Different games, different powers! The same rules apply to Munitions, with each new game featuring a different set of over 40 crazy attributes! You may wish you could find the radiation suit you had in the last game, but the Krilling Field may have something new in store for you.
With a game this diverse, there isn't a single winning strategy. If you're an aggressive player, you may not find a swordfish-for-hire in every game, so you'd better prepare for a period of personal growth! Likewise, peaceful players may find themselves at the mercy of the cards: sometimes theft and violence are the only paths to victory.
On top of all that, the playable area changes size and shape throughout each game, depending on player choices! Make sure to mold the ocean to your advantage!
Anatomy of a map card:
At last! It's the all-new solo mode, Bladefin Blitz!
Bladefin Blitz uses most of the same mechanics as the base game, just slightly tweaked for solo play. In this mode, one player will control a pod of whales being pursued through the ocean by two spectral assassins that auto-move toward the nearest targets at a fixed rate.
In this mode, your goal is to secure each whale in its own outpost. Find four to win! This dynamic style begins with one player controlling four whales that share cards, but it ends with a frantic race as the last whale desperately searches for the final pearl that will earn the sanctuary of the outpost. Will you uncover the full ocean to ease your search? Will you hire swordfish to hinder your pursuers' progress? Manage your resources wisely, and victory will be assured!
We are still tweaking the final rules for this mode, but they will be available with the print version when the campaign ends!
Note: Final components may look slightly different than the prototype above.

At Very Important Press, we like to keep it simple! With backer money, our main focus is on one thing: THE GAME. That's why you'll find only one type of reward at this outset of this Kickstarter: one game, manufactured to the highest specs at the lowest possible price to you. Well and a stuffed animal!
However, we do have a few exciting stretch goals...
Miniatures! Check 'em out!
At $4,000 some of the top webcomic artists from around the web will be doing some guest artist cards for The Krilling Field, who could they be?!
Here's the story: at $12,500, ALL physical copies of the game will include NINE outpost miniatures(that's the tower in the middle).
At $25,000 a new reward tier will be added for the additional miniatures!
For a $50 pledge(once the stretch goal is reached), you'll get one of each whale, two swordfish, two bladefins, and nine ocean outposts! This version of the game is a Kickstarter exclusive, so get it while you can!
Note, these minis will be UNPAINTED and gray, so keep that in mind!
Okay, and for full disclosure, there is a plush whale add-on hidden in the stretch goals. We couldn't resist! We couldn't resist so much we decided to add it from the beginning!
Want even MORE content? Let's hit some stretch goals!
With the Krilling Field, we have decided to calculate shipping costs based on the real-life cost of shipping the finished game to you. As such, we will collect that information and cost once the campaign has ended. Our goal is to keep the shipping prices as low as possible, from past experiences we will have prices vary from $4 all the way to $15 in some countries outside of the United States. We will always be fair and never charge more then cost.
I'm just Travis Webster, a simple man who likes whales and watercolors. I made another game, Hissy Fit, which some of you may know or love. I also wrote a book about bears and baking, called Sally Forth, Vile Curmudgeon! I call my little publishing company Very Important Press because, darn it, it's very important to me! I do all the art and design for my games, and I get really excited about things like DOTA and the Ur-Quan. I made the Krilling Field as a tribute to some of my favorite things: sea life, roguelike video games, and the Choose-your-Own Adventure books we all grew up reading. It has been a wild ride, and it's time for the game to find a wider audience!
Risks and challenges
There's a lot that can happen when you're printing a large run of games, so we've partnered with industry veteran Golden Games to make sure we get the highest quality games at the lowest prices.
Even so, most of the work for the base game of The Krilling Field is already done! We're upgrading a few pieces, so it will take some time to make sure we get everything just right. We'll keep everyone posted as we make headway into this exciting project!
It's our hope to get this game out to you as soon as possible, and the print version of the current game will be available as soon as the campaign ends! Still, with testing and production, some delays may occur.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
