Hello! My name is Rossana, and I’m a Medicine student from Milan. Before I graduate, I want to realize one of my dreams: to travel to Japan on my own to fully immerse myself in the culinary tradition of this country.
After my first Japan trip in 2013 I fell in love with this country and started studying japanese, and this December I will take the JLPT exam. In addition, in October I am going to take the WSET level 1 to become a certified sake sommelier!
My usual travel companions are a camera, a list of restaurants to try (decided before leaving), a city map, and a notebook to jot down all my impressions and memories.
'OISHII: culinary adventures around Japan', starts as a gastronomic report of my solo trip in Japan that will begin in November.
The driving and unifying element of the travel will be Washoku (和食), or traditional Japanese cuisine, characterized by ingredients that are simple yet treated with extraordinary care and respecting seasonal availability.
The main goal of the project will be to find ‘hole in the wall’ ( 穴場) restaurants, and collect the best in a “zine”, a indie publication on paper.
You will be able to choose among three topic-specific guides:
ABOUT IZAKAYAS will guide you to discover izakayas, establishments where you’ll find yourselves in close contact with a clientele composed at 99% by Japanese people, gathered there to drink sake (among other drinks) along with tasty food with a home-made feel to it. I’ll point out the most interesting dishes to try, and which kind of sake to have with them to get the best possible experience.
RAMEN ADVENTURES will introduce you to the food most eaten by Japanese people: Ramen, by explaining its varieties, ingredients and seasonings. I’ll choose the most outstanding restaurants and present them to you, as well as teaching you how to order them from the automatic vending machines outside said restaurants, for an even more genuine Japanese experience!
Last but not least, SNACK TIME will be an introduction to the snacks (and drinks) most loved by Japanese people. Japan offers much more than KitKat and Pocky, there are lots of snacks with captivating packages that you will fall in love with before even tasting them.
What's in for you?
Each zine will contain:
- Useful informations (addresses, opening times, how to get there)
- Suggestions on booking (or when to visit to avoid long queues)
- My Best Picks (to make your experience remarkable)
- Photos that will surely make your mouths water!
- Guidelines to organize and prepare for your trip in Japan!
The diagram below represents where all the funds will be allocated to. Shipping is not included in the pledge levels, and will be added during checkout.
Thank you so much to all of you who made this happen! To my mother and to my partner Cristiano who provided me endless support. To Elisabetta, Davide, Marco, Luca, Lidia and Paolo who helped me with valuable feedback and ideas; to Alessandro for the text editing and to Francesco for the video editing!
