About

Widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of the science fiction genre, Robert Heinlein was a prolific author who experimented widely in his story telling. Writing many philosophically diverse tales across his long career, some books like Stranger in a Strange Land and Starship Troopers are considered modern literary classics.

We now have the unique opportunity to publish a brand new novel by this great author titled The Pursuit of the Pankera , A 'parallel' book written about the parallel universes introduced in book The Number of the Beast, published in 1980.

Upon it's release The Number of the Beast perplexed fans and critics alike. Not only is it different from anything Heinlein had ever written before, it is totally unconventional in its structure, presentation and story-telling. Many readers and critics did not consider it a "good" book in the traditional sense. However, it still has nearly a four star rating on Goodreads (with over 11,000 ratings) and some of his fans consider it one of his MOST innovative books ; An homage to the SF genre itself.

Despite its unconventional structure, The Number of the Beast is part of a set of books called the World As Myth Series, and deals with the concept of a multi-verse; an infinite number of universes with an infinite number of permutations.

What is not widely known is that The Number of the Beast not only deals with parallel universes, it is one of two 'parallel' books that Heinlein wrote with the same characters but different story-lines.

Heinlein had a wicked sense of humor and loved to experiment. How cool would it be to have two parallel texts about parallel universes?

However...

The 'parallel' version was never published.

There has been speculation about why the book was never released. It is known that a copy of the manuscript was distributed at a Worldcon among his close friends and colleagues, but then it disappeared.

Nobody really knows what happened. But Heinlein preserved the manuscript and left it with the rest of his papers.

The Pursuit of the Pankera is an 185,000 word novel with the same characters as The Number of the Beast. The two books share a similar beginning, but where the existing book  goes off on a totally unrelated tangent (almost becoming a satire of science fiction and neglecting the original conflict), The Pursuit of the Pankera  remains focused on the original conflict and works itself towards a much more traditional Heinlein ending. In many ways, it hearkens back to some of the earlier Heinlein novels.

 ABOUT THE PROJECT

Over the years the unpublished book was largely forgotten. The manuscript was taken apart and somehow survived in fragments. After collaborating on a number of other Heinlein projects, The Heinlein Prize Trust asked Phoenix Pick to read the lost manuscript.  Upon examination, the pieces of different manuscript pages (with handwritten notes by Heinlein) made it apparent that the entire new book could be reconstructed from those fragments. All the material was there...it just had to be stitched together back again into a complete novel. Most importantly, the complete book can be recreated without anyone else having to write fillers or make up for missing pieces.

Editing The Book

Phoenix Pick has partnered with renowned science fiction editor Pat Lobrutto in order to ensure that the final published work has been polished to the highest literary standard.  Winner of a World Fantasy Award for editing, Lobrutto has worked on hundreds of science fiction novels, including NYT Best Sellers written by the likes of Isaac Asimov, Stephen King, Eric Van Lustbader, Spider Robinson, Walter Tevis, F. Paul Wilson, Joe R. Lansdale, and multiple Star Wars novelizations. He loves bringing a new book to life, and amongst his contemporaries Pat LoBrutto is known for having a great sense of craft.

Currently Pat is an acquiring editor for Tor Books, a leading publisher of science fiction and fantasy titles. He is also the editorial director of Goldminds Publishing and a scout for the Trident Media Group. He is on the National Advisory Board of the Writer's Hall of Fame of America, and lectures frequently at writers' conferences.

Cover Art and Artist

Illustrator Scott Grimando studied classical painting under Harold Stevenson, one of the few Proteges of Norman Rockwell. He later studied under the acclaimed artist Attila Hejja.

Over the course of his career, Scott Grimando has worked as a fine artist, illustrator, photographer, and art teacher.  Readers of science fiction and fantasy will recognize his work for Prime and Ace books on a number of titles.

Scott’s striking illustrated covers have graced titles in science fiction and fantasy ranging from Barbarians to Capital Ships to fairies and anything else that he and the authors can dream up.  In this case, he will be working with you, the fans!

Scott has signed on to create the cover of The Pursuit of the Pankera, and to go along with the Parallel Universe theory, he will be designing 5 different alternate covers to be chosen by the supporters of the campaign.

Help Choose the Cover!

About the Publisher

Phoenix Pick (the science fiction and fantasy imprint of Arc Manor) has been working with the Heinlein Prize Trust for the last few years to publish a number of their projects.  It is a great honor to be asked to help publish Robert Heinlein's final book.

The majority of receipts from the sale of the The Pursuit of the Pankera go to the Prize Trust to further their various charitable and educational goals.

Rights to most of Robert A. Heinlein's works are managed by the Heinlein Prize Trust.

The Heinlein Prize Trust is non-profit organization founded to encourage and reward progress in commercial space activities. Activities sponsored by the foundation include The Heinlein Prize for Accomplishments in Commercial Space Activities, The Microgravity Research Competition, The Heinlein Commercial Space Activity Prize, and the “Flight Into the Future” international contests. They also offer a number of scholarships to students.

They also work with The Heinlein Society to advocate for blood drives. Encouraging people to donate blood was one of Heinlein's personal passions, something that is carried on the Society and the Trust.

Heinlein's "World as Myth" Parallel Universe Theory

The World-as-Myth stories include most of Heinlein's later novels, from Time Enough for Love through To Sail Beyond the Sunset. A number of continuing characters, most notably Lazarus Long and his extended family, appear in all of them.

The "World as Myth" concept revolves around the idea that there are a nearly infinite number of universes, many shaped by "fabulists" or writers in other universes. In the course of the stories, characters visit universes "created" by L. Frank Baum (Oz), E.E. "Doc" Smith, and Lewis Carroll.

The complete list of stories is:

  • Time Enough for Love
  • The Number of the Beast
  • The Cat Who Walks Through Walls
  • To Sail Beyond the Sunset
  •  The Pursuit of the Pankera

Risks and challenges

Risks around publishing projects typically boil down to 2 questions:

(a) Will the author finish writing the book?
(b) Will the publisher be able to organize the logistics of distribution?

In this case the book has already been written. Our team of top notch editors and a cover artist have already been contracted and begun work. The artist has already completed the 5 cover sketches for supporters to vote on.

Phoenix Pick has released hundreds of books as an established publisher and works with the Heinlein Prize Trust on a number of projects. The logistics for the production and distribution of the book have already been determined based on our history of success.

This Kickstarter is to help the publisher deliver a book of the highest quality. Phoenix Pick is a small press with limited resources. We want to ensure that a project of this magnitude gets the justice it deserves as far as publishing resources.

Thank you! It is only with your help that we are able to make a project of this significance live up to being the final book in Robert Heinlein's collect.
