Meet the Two Navy GuysA year ago, two US Navy veterans, a career naval intelligence officer and an author, brought you the novel Weapons of Mass Deception. Your generous support of the WMD Kickstarter campaign allowed us to produce three beautiful editions of our novel: an ebook, a paperback, and a Kickstarter-only Collector’s Edition. Since its release last May, the book has gathered over 60 great reviews on Amazon. Here’s a sample:
Introducing Jihadi Apprentice, the sequel to Weapons of Mass Deception
As the Two Navy Guys, we write about the big issues of our time. Jihadi Apprentice is a “ripped from the headlines” novel about homegrown radicalization in America’s heartland. Set in Minneapolis, Jihadi Apprentice follows the recruitment and manipulation of a Somali teenager as she is groomed to take action against the country of her birth—the United States. On the other side of the action is FBI Special Agent Liz Soroush, a return character from WMD, who is leading a task force to counter the trend of homegrown violent extremism.
As with Weapons of Mass Deception, we take a world view of the problem, with plenty of action scenes in Somalia, Tehran, and Africa that include some of your favorite characters from WMD.
Your Support Brings This Book to Life
Last year, we produced three editions of WMD that were as professional and polished as something you’d buy in a bookstore. Some supporters even said they were better. (OK, we’re biased). But when you self-publish, you bear all of the book production costs up front. To produce Weapons of Mass Deception to professional standards, we spent thousands of dollars on professional editing, cover design, interior layout, and marketing.
That’s where you come in. With your help, we plan to produce four ways to enjoy Jihadi Apprentice:
- E-book edition
- Paperback edition
- Hardback Collector’s Edition, exclusively for Kickstarter backers
- Audiobook edition
Last year, the Kickstarter Collector’s Edition was by far the most popular reward of the WMD campaign. As the name implies, this reward is available only through the Kickstarter campaign.
These beautiful, limited edition, numbered copies were a big hit with our supporters and (we think) will only increase in value over time. Check out this short video to see what a Collector's Edition looks like.
There’s an Audiobook Option This Year
It’s official, we’ve taken the plunge into audiobooks. When you peruse the rewards, you’ll see that we’ve included audiobooks for Weapons of Mass Deception and Jihadi Apprentice at multiple reward levels.
How Will We Use the Money?
The best part about this campaign is that we have a great track record of success with WMD. On our website, we were completely transparent about how we spent every penny of the money raised.
In summary, we raised about $6000 and here’s how we spent it:
- $3000 – Book production costs such as professional editing, cover art, and interior design
- $2000 – Printing costs for the Collector’s Edition and paperback rewards
- $1300 – Fulfillment costs such as Kickstarter fees and shipping the rewards out to backers
For Jihadi Apprentice, using what we learned last year, we're shooting for even greater success.
Risks and challenges
Our project is very low risk. During our first Kickstarter campaign last year, we delivered every single reward on schedule or early and we expect to do the same thing this year.
As with any complex project, schedule is always a concern, but we have a solid plan and the proven track record of experience to back it up.
If you back our project you won’t be disappointed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
