"For a time I believed that mankind had been swept out of existence, and that I stood here alone, the last man left alive."
A strange, meteor-like object has landed in the heart of England and we have found ourselves the victims of a terrible attack. A ruthless race of Martians, armed with heat rays and poisonous smoke, are intent on destroying everything in their path.
As an alien red weed begins to grown amongst the dead and I must find my way across this decimated wasteland. The fate of the planet hangs in the balance and and my fears have come true... War has come to the Earth.
Also known as an accordion book, concertinas are made from a long sheet of paper that is then folded between two covers. They can either expand outwards and kept flat or be read like a normal book. Concertinas tell a story through a series of illustrations that work together to build a complete narrative.
The book serves a dual purpose. It can either sit on your bookshelf as a normal book, or be folded out and displayed as a piece of artwork.
I've had the amazing opportunity to adapt these classic stories through the support on Kickstarter. After illustrating Dracula, Inferno and Cthulhu, I wanted to slightly step into the realms of science fiction with my own flair of horror-esque artwork. I love the work of H. G. Wells and getting to play around with the scale and visuals in the War of the Worlds is great for the concertina format.
Last year I launched a Kickstarter for a Cthulhu concertina book and the year before that, a Dracula concertina book which also allowed me to adapt Dante's Inferno through stretch goals. Both Kickstarters were incredibly successful and came from people asking for me to illustrate my versions of these stories. It started with Dracula and The War of the Worlds is no different. I've had people asking for me to adapt more classic stories in the realms of horror and science fiction since the Cthulhu Kickstarter ended, in April 2018.
Working on these books is pure joy and but also a balance while working on other projects. A year later, this is once again my way of giving people what they've been asking for and creating something unique for your bookshelf or wall.
Every concertina book is signed and numbered as part of a limited print run.
Regarded as one of the "fathers of science fiction," Herbert George Wells was an English writer and creator of The Time Machine (1895), Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897) and The War of the Worlds (1898).
Lyndon White is a illustrator, writer and comic artist, working with a variety of publishers such as Disconnected Press, Blue Fox Comics and Hellbound Media. On occasion, you’ll even find him teaching comics. Outside of comics he produces art work and designs for music bands, book covers, textile illustration, storyboards and concept work.
Telling his first hand account of the Martian invasion, The Narrator is the protagonist of The War of the Worlds. Part philosopher, part astronomer, The Narrator seeks to escape the Martian onslaught with his mind and body intact.
Conquerors of the Earth, The Martians have travelled to our planet in to launch a full scale invasion on the human race. Few have seen their physical forms but their tripod, Fighting Machines are marching across England, with little hope of stopping them.
I've already spent the time creating the artwork, contacting printers, working out costs and preparing the book for print. As it stands I've taken no payment for any of the illustration work and won't be taking any from the Kickstarter. I just need help to raise the money to cover the printing costs.

This is a smaller scale project compared to the last few books I've worked on but an amazing opportunity to do. I love H. G. Wells' work and getting to adapt these classic stories is nothing short of amazing. This is my third year of delving into the world of adapting classic literature and making concertina books and truly, thank you for your support. I hope you enjoy The War of the Worlds.
Risks and challenges
Every time I use Kickstarter I make sure I have a finished product. The War of the Worlds is no exception. I've already been working with the printer and everything is ready to print once the Kickstarter is finished. I've been part of a number of Kickstarters such as The Call of Cthulhu, The Mind of James Svengal, Bram Stoker's Dracula, A Tale of Shadows, Lost & Found, Mandy the Monster Hunter and a number of comics from Blue Fox Comics, all of which have been successfully funded.
The deadline for getting the books posted out is June 2019, which gives me plenty of time to get the books sent out to you all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
