As America slogged through the Vietnam Conflict, the United States Army looked for an advantage. Enter the Circle, a group of the allies' brightest scientific minds. Their task: create perfect soldiers, specimens beyond the limits of nature. The results were...monstrous. The project was shut down and wiped from memory.
Fast forward over 40 years and the Circle has resurfaced as a designer, recreational narcotic that turns its users into ten foot tall ravenous monsters. Inspector Willam McCabe has followed the swath of destruction from the London underground to the affluent neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Now McCabe must partner with LA Detective Evelyn "Eve" Morgan to stop the drug from spreading as the body count rises. But the government has come to finish the cover up they started decades ago. Will Eve and McCabe get swept under the rug with everything else? And is their partnership a coincidence of circumstance or is there a darker link in their past?
Let's take this ride together and find out!
For those of you that came in late (all you young'ens), pulp fiction is not just a Quentin Tarantino movie. The pulps were cheap fiction magazines published from 1896 through the 1950s. In the great lineage of fiction periodicals, they were the successor of the penny dreadfuls, dime novels and short fiction magazines of the 19th century. They're also considered the predecessor to modern comics and graphic novels since they often featured illustrated novel-length stories of heroic characters.
Okay, okay. Boring history lesson over.
I know you're saying "But Brian, what does this have to do with The Circle?" Well smarty-pants, The Circle is going to be a modernization of the old pulp format. A modern mating of prose and illustration. Not quite a typical graphic novel with sequential art and not a paperback novel. It's an opportunity for me to utilize my years of graphic design experience co-mingled with my love of illustration.
"Talk is cheap, dude. Let's see the goods. I want to know what it's going to look like."
I figured you'd say that. Which is why I've provided the handy sample below!
So, what's next?
Action! Sci-Fi! Horror! Comedy! Romance! Exclamation points! (Be honest. It was the exclamation points that sold you, wasn't it?)
I started writing the script for The Circle back in 2005 with the help of my good friend Peter Mahoney. It was originally written as a screenplay but the intention was always to make it into a comic book or graphic novel. The final draft was finished in 2007 and some art and design was started. But I never knew how I would get it published or get it out there. So it got put on the back-burner as I took other freelance jobs or did things to pay the bills. Then I discovered Kickstarter a few months ago and it's opened up a whole new world. Now ANYTHING seems possible!
Please note that this could be considered a MATURE READERS book. It's somewhere between PG-13 and R. Your easy ratings guide for the book:
- Blood, violence and gore (Probably nothing you wouldn't see on a primetime network procedural TV show, ie. CSI, Criminal Minds, Castle, etc)
- Language (You've heard these words before, maybe when your dad hit his thumb with a hammer. This is not at the level of a Joe Pesci movie)
- Sex and nudity (We're not talking Caligula here but there will be some skin shown, both male and female)
- Drug use (duh)
- Mature themes (I don't really know what that means but I'm just covering all my bases)
Now we're getting to the good stuff. Let's take a quick rundown of what you're getting:
The Book: Softcover, trade paperback style. Perfect bound with 140+ pages, containing 7 chapters with each chapter having its own intro splash page. Pin-up gallery in the back featuring some of my artist friends as well. (please let me know in the rewards survey if you would like it signed or personalized)
Temporary Tattoos: Show your support with a logo tattoo (2"x 3") or show your love for Eve by getting matching tattoos (2"x 2")!
Rubber Bracelet: 1/2" wide, silicon wristband with the text "Circle Engineering District: Test Subject". Light blue color shown is approximated.
Prints: All 6"x 9" and 12"x 18" prints are on premium coated 80lb, gloss cover stock. The metallic prints are printed on a cover stock with a metallic coating that gives it a pearlescent sheen. They look great and have been a big hit for me at conventions. (please let me know in the rewards survey if you would like them signed or personalized)
Updates during the campaign will include a step-by-step look at the creation of the movie style poster!
Catalog Prints: Go on over to my website and take a look around. The 12"x 18" prints are on premium coated 80lb, gloss cover stock. I've got Sports, TV, Movies, Comics and various other subject matter available on there.
Trading Cards: Glossy, full color, 18 card set. The cards will feature character art and bios as well as promotional art. 6 of the cards will have art on the back that connects to form a larger image.
Sketch Cards: Grayscale or with touches of color. Any character you would like (within reason)
Classified File: This is almost all the information the government has on the Circle project. It was originally thought that all of these files were burned, but a handful survived. It includes photos and bios of the known and suspected participants and other varied information. If you receive one of these, please be on alert. The government may come to get it back...
Kidding! It's all just fun stuff including some exclusive art.
Standee: 24" scale, laser diecut cardboard character standees. They will each come with their own folding stand.
Headshot Commissions: Your favorite character or celebrity (within reason), in a fully rendered color illustration. I will send you a digital file as well as a hard copy in either 8"x 10" or 12"x 18", your choice.
First of all, if we reach any of these, I'm going to get emotional. Can't help it, that's just how I am and I will be so grateful to all of you that it will be inevitable. I promise to not send a video update so you don't have to see me get teary.
Sticker: All pledges of $10 and up will receive this full color, die-cut vinyl sticker of The Circle logo.
T-shirts: All pledges of $75 and up will receive this exclusive Kickstarter campaign t-shirt, with the slogan "I gave evolution a boost!" on the back.
To add an add-on to your Kickstarter pledge, follow these steps:
Go to the top of the Circle Kickstarter page and press the Manage Your Pledge Button. (If you have not pledged yet it will say Back this Project.) Increase your pledge in the Pledge Amount box by the total of the add-ons you want to add.
Do not change the tier you are currently pledged at, unless you also want to change it while you are on this screen. You will then need to add the total of your add-ons onto the amount of the new tier you chose.
After the end of the Kickstarter campaign you will receive a survey that will allow you to explain how you would like the add-on money assigned, the size of T-shirts, etc.
Note: All add-ons require a $25 pledge level (LAPD Level) or above.

Risks and challenges
Let's face it. Real life always gets in the way of our dreams. But the people that achieve their dreams are the ones that overcome those obstacles. And if it's not hard to do, is it worth doing?
Make no mistake, this is going to be hard and very time-consuming. I'm responsible for every aspect of this project from start to finish. There is no team to help out. I am the team. (huh, for once there is an "I" in team) The script is done but all told this is going to take close to 200 pieces of fully painted art. That's a lot! I have a full time job (see my bio) but I'm determined to get this done. I'm not accepting any other freelance work or commissions. This will be the only drawing I'll be doing until it's done. Not only do I want to get this done and released, but I want to deliver something to you that you'll enjoy. Something that you'll tell your friends about and they'll tell their friends and.....sorry, getting ahead of myself. Got to get it done first.
Another risk is that this is for mature readers, as stated above. Some people might be sensitive to that and not be interested. I don't feel like I'm including anything that you haven't seen before and if I am, let me be the one to introduce you to it!
Here's hoping the biggest obstacle is getting orders for more books than I originally print.
