What's Better Than a Barrel Full of Monkeys?

A stew pot full of gnomes! That's right, we've officially partnered with the Gnomes over at Gnome Stew. After they got to see Realm Works in action last week, they wanted to be a part of what we're doing. So we worked out the details and made it happen.

Who are these illustrious Gnomes? They certainly aren't your normal garden variety gnomes. They're behind the most widely read game mastering blog on the planet. In addition to the sage advice they offer every day on their website, the Gnomes have published three invaluable resource books for GMs through Engine Publishing. We're thrilled to announce that we’re bringing the content of all three of these incredible books to Realm Works, fully integrated for optimum usefulness!

But we're not stopping there. With the hearty endorsement of the Gnomes, we're going to provide the content from these three books at no extra cost to Kickstarter Backers! The Backer level you choose determines exactly how much free content you’ll get. All of this content will be sold separately once Realm Works launches, but our backers can get it for free. Here's a run-down of what you can get:

1. Never Unprepared: The Complete Game Master’s Guide to Prep. From award-winning author Phil Vecchione, this guide will help you prepare for games faster, avoid common pitfalls, and have more fun in the process. Described as “Phil Vechionne’s epic rock ballad to game prep”, we’ll be weaving this meaty treatise into Realm Works, allowing you to leverage the wisdom therein like never before.

All Backers who choose the Pack Member ($35 pledge) or higher reward tier will receive the material from Never Unprepared (a $9.95 value) fully integrated into Realm Works and absolutely free!

2. Masks: 1,000 Memorable NPCs for Any Roleplaying Game. This is the ultimate NPC resource written by the award-winning authors of Gnome Stew. In fact, Masks won the 2012 Gold ENnie Award for Best Aid/Accessory, and was also nominated for Product of the Year. Within this weighty tome, you’ll find NPCs for fantasy, science fiction and modern games, all easily adaptable to any genre and any RPG, just like Realm Works! Every one of these NPCs will be re-created within Realm Works and available for instant use within your campaigns. Each NPC has a role and specific traits, so you’ll be able to quickly locate exactly what you need through Realm Works' powerful search capabilities.

All Backers who choose the Pack Hunter ($50 pledge) or higher reward tier will receive all 1,000 NPCs from Masks (a $16.95 value) fully integrated into Realm Works at no charge!

3. Eureka: 501 Adventure Plots to Inspire Game Masters. Written by nine veteran game masters, all authors on Gnome Stew, Eureka is more than simple adventure seeds. As you know, adventure hooks alone don’t give you much to work with, but fully developed adventures can be hard to personalize and fit into an on-going game. Eureka strikes a great middle ground, providing the main ingredients and letting you decide how to prepare them. This highly regarded material includes plot hooks to draw your players into the adventure, as well as encounters to flesh them out.

Eureka contains plots for fantasy, science fiction and horror games and they are easily adaptable to multiple genres. We’re building these plots into Realm Works for you so you can quickly tailor them to your purposes and seamlessly weave them into your campaign. Each plot will be tagged with suitable keywords, such as “intrigue”, “exploration”, “combat-heavy”, and many more. Consequently, it will be easy to find what you need and leverage it within Realm Works.

All Backers who choose the Timber Wolf ($65 pledge) or higher reward tier will receive all 501 plots from Eureka (a $16.95 value) fully integrated into Realm Works for free!

Stay tuned for more announcements and thanks for your support!

I'm wondering : will I need to maintain a cloud service subscription to use this material after the 15 months included in my pledge are gone ? Or will it be forever integrated into the "offline" content of RW ?

Perfect; I'm about to go to $100 for the Hero Lab content anyways... Can't wait for this!

    3. Lone Wolf Development Creator on February 17, 2013

@David Campbell. Yes, that's correct. At the $80 pledge level, you'll get all three integrated into Realm Works.

Quick question: I'm at the $80 level; that will include all three, correct?

    5. Lone Wolf Development Creator on February 15, 2013

@Dark Smile Games: Unfortunately, customizing the options for each person won't be possible. We'll only be able to determine access to the Engine Publishing content based on the pledge level.

Is it possible to swap which piece of the pdfs gets integrated, for those of us who own a copy of never unprepared, but not the others?

@LWD- Sweet! Just making sure. :)

    8. Lone Wolf Development Creator on February 14, 2013

@Brock Ballingdark: If you're at the Alpha Wolf level, I'm not aware of anything we have planned to announce that you would miss out on. Our planned announcements generally target the lower handful of pledge levels, and you'll receive everything that those levels get.

    9. Lone Wolf Development Creator on February 14, 2013

@Oregon Pinkrose: That's a question that we have not discussed with Engine Publishing. It's definitely possible that could be done with some extra effort to coordinate everything between us, but it would not be simple to do, and I don't have any answers on that right now.

    10. Lone Wolf Development Creator on February 14, 2013

@Konig-Wolf: We haven't finalized exactly how all the material will be transformed into Realm Works yet. We've only discussed some preliminary ideas. The intent with Never Unprepared is to bring all the "meat" across, which means all the straight text portions. However, one option being considered is to tailor the a bit more to the way Realm Works operates. Since all of the concepts in the book reflect exactly what we're striving to achieve with Realm RW, we could adjust some terms and revise some examples so that they directly translate into effectively using RW. In addition, the book wouldn't be partitioned exactly the same way you're used to reading a book or PDF, even though all the content would be there within RW.

So the bottom line is that there likely will be value to some people in also having the physical book and/or PDF, and the form/structure of the content will be somewhat different within RW. However, all of the core text portions will definitely be within RW. The specifics of all this still need to be worked out.

      Hope this helps!

Awesome! I don't have any of these books and love to have them in RW. Great add-ons! I get all three since I'm Alpha Wolf, correct?

    12. Oregon Pinkrose on February 14, 2013

What about for those that have already purchased all 3 books? Can we get them integrated?
Or maybe as an inexpensive add-on?

    13. Konig-Wolf
      on February 14, 2013

For a book like Never Unprepared, does that include the straight text portions of the book too? I was looking at puchasing the book, but if I can read it from inside of Realm Works, I'd be cool with that. ^_^

    14. Lone Wolf Development Creator on February 14, 2013

@Tommi Krogerus. Among the chief advantages of the content's integration into Realm Works will be its readily accessible nature and easy ability to search for exactly what you need. For example, if you wanted a plot suitable for an "intrigue" adventure, you could search in Realm Works for those with that characteristic, choose one, and then start incorporating it into your campaign. You could do something similar for NPCs that you might need. Of course, you could also build the material into Realm Works yourself, and realize these advantages. The advantage of the rewards in this case is that the integration work will have been for you. Hope this helps!

I'm excited about this partnership (and am the publisher of these books), and I think Realm Works backers will like our books and how they'll be integrated into the software.

The links above will take you to a host of reviews for each book, as well as free samples of all of them. You can also access the free samples on one page here: That'll give you a look at 12 plots from Eureka, 18 NPCs from Masks, and excerpts from Never Unprepared.

    16. Tommi Krogerus on February 14, 2013

My backer level is not high enough to get Masks or Eureka integrated, but I already own these books. Will there be features that I will miss owning books in PDF format, but not having them integrated ?

    17. David Johnston on February 14, 2013

I can vouch for the quality of these books. They're really well done. It'll be great to see how they get integrated into Realm Works. Thanks, LWD!
