What's Our Story?
Theatermaker and Tatro are the brainchild of Founder Will Barrios. Theatermaker is a toy company focused on educational play through theater. Our mission is to help others express a limitless depth of imagination through theater play. We encourage creativity, seek to inspire and help others dream, one person at a time. Tatro embodies that mission.
Will grew up a theater kid. When he was 10 he watched a science show on magnetic power. The experiment showed 2 magnets moved back and forth on both sides of the surface. That's when it struck Will! The surface was a stage and the magnets were characters! He could use the power of magnets to move the characters around the stage. He could then build sets and create his own shows at home (no more going through his mom's linen closet to build curtains in the living room for a dinner theater)! Will got a cardboard box, cut a hole in the top front and added a floor with space for hands. That's when the beginning of what would become Tatro was born! As a kid, Will found it hard to find toys that provided the limitless depth of imagination that theater provided. Most toys have a certain limit to their depth and this toy solved that for him. Will had a problem finding the right toy and he solved it - future Theatermaker in action!
This campaign is raising support to finish the design and manufacturing process of Theatermaker's first product line Tatro.

Why Tatro, Why Now?
‘Art is not the possession of the few who are recognized writers, painters, musicians; it is the authentic expression of any and all individuality.’ - John Dewey
Kids and Technology
In a recent article for The Atlantic, Jean M. Twenge, Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University shares some statistics about the effects of technology on today's kids:
- In 2015, on average, young people spent more than seven-and-a-half hours a day involved with non-school-related technology
- Fifty-seven percent more teens were sleep deprived in 2015 than in 1991
The current statistics on the effects of technology on kids is important to understand. But what do we do? We get kids back to tangible and humanistic interactions through educational toys.
How Do Educational and Physical Toys Help?
- Educational toys provide more meaning during play and benefit learning in areas such as memory, social awareness, and critical thinking.
- When children play with physical toys their imagination takes off!
- When children hold a toy in their hands they can learn skills such as spatial reasoning, geometry, and problem-solving.
What is the Goal of Kickstarter?
Kickstarter allows backers to fund a project at different levels with different degrees of incentives for backing. If we meet our goal of $25,000 by December 15, 2017, we will have enough funding to finalize designs and move to manufacturing. The credit cards of our backers will be charged and we’ll receive the funds! If we don't meet our goal, your pledge won’t be withdrawn from your account and no rewards will be sent. That's why we need you to support our campaign and bring Tatro to every kid!
Kickstarter backers have the unique opportunity to pre-order Tatro with additional incentives in each reward tier making your pledge a value not only for our campaign but for you! These incentives are only good for the Kickstarter campaign and any future public pre-orders via e-commerce, trade shows, and special events will pay the full retail price with no additional incentives. Kickstarter backers can also expect to receive their Tatro sets before the general public by Fall 2018.
What We've Done So Far
We currently support our business using personal funds and super supportive family members! We are "bootstrapping" it through the design and development process. In order to get Tatro to market we need your support to complete the next phase to finalize our design and manufacturing.
We hope you understand by this point how passionate we are about this toy! We are fully committed to seeing this product to market and here's what we've done while "bootstrapping" the business:
- produced well over 10 prototypes
- conducted a 2-month customer validation survey - we wanted to validate the concept to make sure it was a valid toy in today's market. And the survey proved us right!
- hired a professional Broadway scenic illustrator - how great are the illustrations?!
- secured legal counsel for intellectual property rights - Tatro is officially patent pending!
- developed partner relationships - we travel frequently to connect with different partner companies, establishing relationships that align with our product and mission
- launched social media accounts to build our audience ahead of the Fall 2018 launch
- assessed manufacturing costs - we've assessed costs for manufacturing and considered many different production options
December 2017 - January 2018: finalize all manufacturing needs, secure manufacturer, and funding
Spring-Summer 2018: manufacturing, trade shows, continue building audience and partnerships
Fall 2018: Tatro sets delivered to Kickstarter backers. New website and e-commerce go live after backers have time to receive the toy.
**all shipping costs for US backers have been factored into the reward tier. This will be used to offset international shipping costs**

Risks and challenges
Theatermaker has invented and designed a brand new toy concept. This comes with a few challenges. We're excited about the challenge but recognize we should be clear about any risks we may face.
- alterations and adaptations needed to adjust the product and illustrations for manufacturing (i.e. die-cutting, magnets, color and/or illustration adjustments)
- sourcing appropriate material (vinyl, plastics, and magnets which have a fluctuating price)
- safety certification
- overseeing quality control in manufacturing - and any issues that arise
- developing supply chain and distribution for movement of new product to backers and e-commerce customers
Please keep in mind that all images are prototype images only. The final product may differ slightly from Kickstarter images. There are many other issues that we expect will come up that we can't foresee at this time. We promise that we will communicate any significant issues that affect the delivery clearly and quickly.
You're here for us and we're here for you to see this through!
This product contains small magnets. Swallowed magnets can stick together and cause serious injury. Seek immediate medical attention if magnet(s) are swallowed or inhaled. Not for children under the age of 3. The product is intended for ages 6-12.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
