About this project
Hi! I’m Dyan!
This is my daughter, Emma, the little light bulb who shines so bright in our family.
Last year, we found out Emma has a disorder called Neurofibromatosis, or NF1.
NF1 causes a lot of problems, but the worst is tumors can grow along nerves all over the body.
Right after Thanksgiving, we learned Emma has six tumors inside her. Four in her chest, and one on each kidney.
When I got the news, it was like the world stopped spinning. She'd had an MRI for something I thought was unrelated, and they'd found tumors?
But that phone call only got worse.
In fact, I heard the eight words no parent ever wants to hear about their child.
It looks like one of them is cancer.
Over the next 4 months, we went through a lot of bad things. But nothing was worse than seeing my baby scared and confused about what was happening to her.
I was desperate to help her cope, so I started making up stories to take her mind off what was happening. Like, when her nurses had to put on sterile gowns and masks that made her cry, I told Emma to pretend they were princesses getting ready for a ball.
Pretty soon, I realized Emma wasn’t the only child out there who could use these stories.
Almost 40 kids a day are diagnosed with cancer, and I thought I might be able to help them, too.
So, using our stories as inspiration, I wrote this book.
Amazing Annabelle is about a little girl who uses her imagination to get through the bad parts of her cancer diagnosis and treatment.
She flies on a magic carpet, explores the sea in a submarine, blasts off into space, and more.
While I was writing Amazing Annabelle, I knew I wanted a upbeat story, but I also made sure I didn’t ignore what these kids go through.
I talk about things like feeling sick and losing their hair, but I tried to give them a different way to look at those experiences. A way that might help them feel happier, or less afraid.
And Amazing Annabelle isn’t just for these kids. It’s for their parents, too.
Instead of watching their child be afraid, and not be able to do anything about it, parents can use Amazing Annabelle to brighten up a dark time.
And my story gives them a way to talk about scary things in a way that’s safe and easy for their child to understand.
Amazing Annabelle will be a 8” x 8” paperback book.
It'll have 24 pages of full color illustrations and 3 coloring pages at the end where kids can draw their own adventures.
My illustrator is Ben Lew, who’s already created two page spreads and all the book illustrations you see here.
My Kickstarter funding will pay for Annabelle to be fully illustrated and put into print-ready digital form, so it can be published and purchased on Amazon.
I wanted to make my project all about these kids, so every funding level above $25 includes donating at least one copy of Amazing Annabelle to pediatric cancer patients across the U.S.
And, if Annabelle is published, I’m going to donate 50% of my profits from any future sales to a charity called Unravel Pediatric Cancer.
Donations to Unravel go directly to researchers who are trying to find better treatments, and a cure, for pediatric cancer.
When you pledge to my Kickstarter, you’re not only going to help me bring Amazing Annabelle to life.
You’re also going to bring joy to kids who feel pain and go through bad things every day.
In the end, you’re going to help researchers get the funding they need to find new treatments for pediatric cancer, and a cure.
All you have to do is pledge something to my project, even a $1.
You’ll get all kinds of goodies, and best of all, you’ll know you helped thousands of kids as they fight for their lives.
Thank you so much for your support!
Together you and I can bring joy to our littlest cancer warriors!

Annabelle felt sick, and didn’t want to play. She felt tired all the time, and it wouldn’t go away.
But she was a girl who was used to having fun, so she piled up some blankets and laid in the sun.
And do you know what she did? She gave something a try. She dreamed she flew a magic carpet straight up to the sky.
She smiled and waved as the wind blew by her lashes, and zipped through the air like bright lightning flashes.
She floated and zoomed, she dipped and she spun, and when it was over, she’d never had so much fun.
Her parents took her to the doctor to see why she felt bad. They didn’t know what was wrong, and it made her feel sad.
She had to get pictures taken with a special machine. It was a long, white tube and looked like a submarine.
This made her feel scared, and she wanted to run away. But there was no way around it. Today was the day.
Do you know what she did instead? It’s something you can do, too. She pretended she was an explorer in the deep ocean blue.
She imagined all kinds of fish swimming around, even a whale with its baby, making lovely singing sounds.
A sea turtle searched the coral for something to eat. While a shark swam by, looking for a yummy treat.
Risks and challenges
My illustrator is a rock star, publishing on Amazon is really easy, and Emma's health is stable.
I don't work outside the home, so whatever time I need to devote to fulfillment I can handle (and I have some friends who can help me!)
Really, I can't think of any obstacles I wouldn't be able to overcome.
I've been passionately working on this project for six months. Nothing was going to stop me from getting to this point, and nothing will stop me from taking it all the way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
