Do you want to see a Cat Café in Kalamazoo, MI!? Let's make it happen!
Cats that live in shelters spend most of their day in cages, aside from the occasional volunteer visitor, but cats need much more than that!
They need space to run, play, jump, and interact with each other and that's exactly what they will get at the KZoo Cat Café!
Not only will the cafe be a meow-velous place for cats - cat lovers (aka humans) will have the ability to relax, drink beverages, interact with the free roaming cats, and possibly adopt a new family feline at the KZoo Cat Café too!
My name is Abbey Thompson and I'm one of those aforementioned cat lovers. I have two main passions - caring for / finding cats forever homes and giving people therapeutic help through the company of animals which is why I am opening the KZoo Cat Café.
I've been volunteering at local cat shelters for years and although it is an amazingly rewarding experience, I've seen many cats in cages get passed over for other cats simply because they didn't get the same interactive experience. Shelters are a necessity to save cats across the country and the employees/volunteers are amazing individuals, but the most ideal situation for both the adoptable cats and the cat lovers is a cat café.
How Does It Work?
When you’re in need of some cat cuddles, a place to hang out with friends, or just want a place to relax, you can stop into the KZoo Cat Café! When you arrive, you will pay an entrance fee and select from our available beverages and snacks. Once you’re ready, you can head over to the main area of the café and enjoy your refreshments in the company of the adorable and adoptable cats. Once you’re in the door, feel free to do homework, relax, play games, work on group projects, and play with all the cats. If you’re in market to bring a new pet home, you can interact with all the cats as if they were your own before you actually take one home!
Aside from the typical daily operations in the café, we will also host special events like fundraising events, open mic nights, live local music, and yoga classes. We’ve all seen the pictures of cats doing yoga with their human friends, right? That could be you now, at Kzoo Cat Cafe!
What If I Want To Adopt?
First – that’s PAWesome! If you’ve found a cat at the café that you just can’t live without, you’ll be able to adopt! KZoo Cat Café has a partnership with a local cat rescue called Cat Nap Lodge. All of our adoptions will use the Cat Nap Lodge adoption paperwork and process.
A little more about Cat Nap Lodge: located just outside of Kalamazoo, the Cat Nap Lodge is a non-profit rescue operating out of a family home. The cats and kittens have all been rescued from unsafe or unhealthy situations, treated by Dr. Ruey Stocking at the Red Barn Cat Clinic, loved and socialized by devoted Cat Nap Lodge Volunteers and made ready for forever homes of their own. For more information about Cat Nap Lodge feel free to visit their website: http://www.catnaplodge.org/
The great thing about our partnership is that the KZoo Cat Café provides more physical space for the Cat Nap Lodge which means that they can rescue more cats than ever before and with the exposure these cats will get at the cafe, more cats will be able to be adopted than ever before!

Risks and challenges
Risks: death by cat cuddles. OK, but for real... a big risk is not getting enough funding through this kickstarter campaign before our launch. We need your help to make this happen! We will be using the funding you provide from this campaign in the following ways:
First 6 Months Rent: 42%
Start-Up Costs: 34%
Reward Items: 15%
Kickstarter Fees: 11%
So, if we don't raise the funding during this campaign we will take a major hit and delay the opening of KZoo Cat Cafe.
Challenges include health code requirements, securing a location, making updates to the building, and explaining to people that it's a cafe for people, not for just for cats.
So - what is the plan?
Right meow, we are in the process of securing funding, and finding the PURRfect location in Kalamazoo! Then, with your help, we will make a difference in the lives of people and cats in our very own community!!
