Thank you for taking the time to come here and look at this Kickstarter project. Don't worry if you didn't back the first successfully completed campaign for The Midderlands - An OSR Mini-setting & Bestiary. You can still get that via THIS Kickstarter too, plus LOADS of other goodness to jam-pack a campaign for years.

--------------------------

“[The Midderlands] as a small area campaign supplement is the best I’ve ever seen, displacing Dave Arneson’s Blackmoor First Fantasy Campaign area, which up until now -- and that’s decades -- has been my favorite one.” - Matt Finch (Creator of Swords & Wizardry).

--------------------------

The setting is suitable for use with most fantasy role-playing games (specifically OSR rules systems, but also D&D and Pathfinder), but is designed specifically for the Swords & Wizardry Complete rules (free PDF).

Important Note: All the packing/shipping charges listed later in the 'Shipping & Delivery' section will be collected separately by Backerkit at the end of the campaign. PLEASE DO NOT INCREASE YOUR PLEDGES TO INCLUDE SHIPPING IN THE KICKSTARTER, but be aware that these will be charged during BackerKit checkout.

Firstly, and most-importantly - This is not a revised version, this is EVEN MORE content and game-juice.

The Midderlands setting gets bigger, expanding out into Havenland (the country that The Midderlands is set in) and its bordering lands, in a dark, twisted, and viridian version of the British Isles.

If you want to know a bit more about the original 'The Midderlands' setting book, then check out the original Kickstarter for more information, or watch my interview with the creator of Swords & Wizardry, Matt Finch.

What is going to be in the new 'The Midderlands Expanded' book?

  • 50+ pages of content previously released in The Midderlands Additions, and The Midderlands Additions II, but as part of a glorious, high specification, hardback format.
  • Approx. 170 pages of new, previously unseen content.
  • More awesome artwork.
  • More locations.
  • More items.
  • More spells.
  • More flora and fauna.
  • More monsters.
  • More classes.
  • More adventure hooks.
  • More adventure.
  • More discovery.
  • More green-hued, dark-fantasy weirdness.

This kinda stuff...

Warning: As before, in this new expanded version there is humour, some swear words and graphic descriptions.

So, who are the mysterious members of this shadowy group of creatives that are going to bring this to life?

Glynn Seal (Writing, Artwork, Cartography, Layout, Project Manager)

He has written the setting elements, and also had the hand on design/layout, artwork, cartography, and will be handling the project management. Glynn has been professionally involved in the production of technical drawings for 29 years, and is now a full-time freelancer in cartography, art, design, layout and publishing for tabletop games as MonkeyBlood Design. Equally at home with traditional mediums or PC applications, Glynn has provided cartography, artwork, design and layout works for other independent publishers as well as a few of his own products. Glynn first played Red Box D&D when he was about 12 years old. His favourite old school cartography is that of the TSR UK series of modules, and he loved reading Magician, Silverthorn and Darkness at Sethanon by Raymond E. Feist.

Check Glynn out further at MonkeyBlood Design, Google+, Twitter and Facebook.

Edwin Nagy (Writing)

Edwin Nagy is very excited to be working with MonkeyBlood Design again. A fan of both fantasy and horror gaming, this project sits right in the sweet spot. Edwin has worked with Lesser Gnome, Frog God Games, Dark Naga, and Greg Gillespie as a writer, editor, and developer. He can be heard as a player and keeper on Skype of Cthulhu and GM on the Tales from series of actual play video-casts at twitch.tv/froggodgames.

Mark Nolan (Writing)

Since the first The Midderlands Kickstarter campaign, Mark has been seeing Midderlands creatures everywhere, and rather unfortunately keeps referring to places by their Midderlands names! Fortunately he has been given the opportunity to contribute to the second The Midderlands Expanded Kickstarter! He hopes that getting some of these creatures out into the world will make room for more monsters and adventures in his head. He has also worked with MonkeyBlood Design & Publishing to create and publish other works.

Jim Magnusson (Artwork)

If Glynn is like Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic, then Jim is like the Human Torch or maybe even Peter Parker. While Glynn is professional, Jim is like the more light-hearted, fun-loving, not-on-time prankster. But still, something gets delivered and it comes from the murky deeps of a crazed mind. Everyone always says they played some red box, but Jim played all the Swedish games of the time - Drakar och Demoner, Mutant, Wasteland, Kult and also some classics like Champions and Dark Conspiracy. Who knows what was played first?

Juan Ochoa (Artwork)

Juan is creating more great art pieces to grace the book. Check out his website for his awesomeness.

Steve Punter (Artwork)

I’m Steve and I’m a freelance Illustrator, I’ve worked a lot with the likes of Warpstone Magazine, and Liber Fanatica, dedicated Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Magazines, they’re silly enough to let me do a spot of Art Directing these days which is great fun. I have been involved in Warpstone since the beginning (Issue 2 after having seen Issue 1 and knowing I had to be involved) and I am a big fan of WFRP.

I’ve been playing RPG’s since the glory days of the 80’s, starting with Moldvay D&D, then following White Dwarf scenarios into other games such as Runequest, a light tentacled touch of Call of Cthulhu, and of course Warhammer, and tons of others over too the years. Currently we’ve been playing The One Ring and Advanced Fighting Fantasy. The Midderlands is my group’s next game setting to be explored – It will be a lot of fun I know and I am really looking forward to it. When I saw the first The Midderlands Kickstarter I was immediately hooked, I loved the green and spiky weirdness of it’s take on 15th/16th century England, the humour and the strange and yet familiar beasties and the equally familiar and strange location descriptions. There is something brilliantly familiar and yet twisted about it all, it makes it very approachable and I am really excited to be involved with it. Anyway, I’m off for a tour of the Oxenshire pubs looking for Green-crested Bottlejacks although some say that's just an excuse to drink but don’t listen to them!

Check out Steve's work here.

Matthew Pook (Editing)

Matthew is a resident of the Midderlands, but not a native. It is his task to make Spot Hidden rolls on an almost prodigious basis, ‘tut’ quietly to himself and shake his head, before politely suggesting to Glynn that he might like to change one or two things. He has been gaming since 1980, writing reviews since the year 2000, and editing things since 2008. These began with the infamous Masks of Nyarlathotep Companion and have continued with titles for Cubicle Seven Entertainment, Miskatonic River Press, Modiphius Entertainment, Sixtystone Press, Goodman Games, and Lamentations of the Flame Princess, including Lamentations of the Flame Princess Weird Fantasy Roleplaying, 2nd Edition, Scenic Dunnsmouth, The God that Crawls, The Magnificent Joop van Ooms, The Monolith from beyond Space and Time, Death Love Doom, Fuck for Satan, something nobody can mention, Better Than Any Man, The Doom-Cave of the Crystal-Headed Children, Tower of the Stargazer, Blood in the Chocolate, England Upturn'd, and The Squid, the Cabal, and the Old Man. (If you think that the last sentence needs editing, you now know what he has to put up with.)

Matthew likes to review games. His reviews have appeared in Steve Jackson Games' Pyramid and Pagan Publishing's The Unspeakable Oath magazines and currently appear at Reviews from R’lyeh (rlyehreviews.blogspot.com). He lives with a ridiculously large games collection, an understanding perky Goth, and the requisite four cats. Only one of which is called Kitler. All four are related.

The original book has received some great reviews and compliments, and this one will be just as good, if not better! Please take the time to review these, and pledge with confidence.

Check out the full video interview here.

"The Midderlands campaign setting is remarkable. One of the most creative and well thought out I have ever seen." - Kip Corriveau (on Facebook).

"They say you can't have Quick, Quality, and Price all in the same product but somehow you managed." - Morgan Patrick Hazel (on Facebook).

"The Midderlands is among the best-looking OSR books ever." - Theodric Ælfwinesson (on Twitter)

"So needless to say that the Midderlands is very well done, the layout is easy on the eyes, the material fits exactly the itch of a deep, dark, dank fantasy England. Glynn Seal knows his sources & solid background of his world very well." - Eric Fabiaschi.

"The artwork, design, and layout are gorgeous and help evoke the setting." - Larry Hamilton.

"I love this book, and have no hesitation at all, in giving it a 'Legendary' rating." - Red Dice Diaries.

So what the hell are you creating here? Good question, we are creating Three New 'Artifacts'.

Artifact 1 (NEW) - The Midderlands Expanded Book

Physical Copy (and also Digital PDF).

The book will be the same quality as the originally Kickstarted 'The Midderlands - An OSR Mini-setting & Bestiary'. The book is professional quality, offset printed, not a print-on-demand offering. My chosen printer has been established in the UK since 1862 and they make wondrous books.

The book will be 224 pages, A5 casebound, smyth-sewn with green head and tail bands, gloss cover, and printed end papers. It will have two green ribbon bookmarks. The pages will be printed in colour on 115gsm silk paper. It will kick Muckulus butt.

Inside, the book will consist of approx. 50+ pages of text and art already found in The Midderlands Additions, and The Midderlands Additions II, found over on DriveThru, as well as approximately 170 pages of new and unseen content containing additional material for the Midderlands area already described in the first book, as well as more material from further into the country of Havenland, and its surrounding lands - Refer to the new Havenland Map (see below)

Note: All images are conceptual 3D mockups and designs/artwork are subject to change. Also, colour representations may not be accurate to final product.

Artifact 2 (NEW) - The Midderlands Gamemaster Screen and Die-drop Card

GM Screen Physical Copy (and Digital PDF/JPG will be available).

GM Screen Concept
GM Screen Concept

An A5-landscape, 4-panel, 300gsm card Gamemaster screen. Gloss laminated to both sides, and folding to A5-sized. It will sit at a height of approx. six inches above the tabletop. This will allow a GM to sit and still see the majority of the table and his player's rolls, preventing an unscalable 'wall of force' between.

The player-facing side will have a continuous, Midderlands-themed landscape artwork.

The gamemaster-facing side will have tables and reference information for the Swords & Wizardry Complete rules.

Die-drop Card Physical Copy (and Digital PDF/JPG will be available).

Die-drop Card front and rear (shown on Havenland map)
Die-drop Card front and rear (shown on Havenland map)

An A5, 300gsm, gloss laminated die-drop card. The design of the card is currently subject to change - above is for concept only.

The front will have a die-drop area for generating interesting Midderlands-themed results. Instructions for using it will be found in The Midderlands Expanded book.

The reverse will include the Open Gaming License information (OGL).

Artifact 3 (NEW) - Havenland Map and Mood Art

Physical Copy (and Digital PDF/JPG will be available).

The map/mood art will be printed both sides on 130gsm gloss or silk paper. On the one side will be a colour version of the Havenland map (see below), and on the reverse will be an 8-panel 'Mood Art' graphic to set the scene for your games. The map will be A2-sized and folded to A5 and provided loose, tucked within the book.

As well as the New Artifacts, we are also offering some pledge levels to include rewards from the previous Kickstarter, these are the Old Artifacts.

Artifact 4 (OLD) - The Midderlands - An OSR Setting & Bestiary

Physical Copy (also available as a Bookmarked Digital PDF).

This is the 224-page book created during the first Kickstarter project, and is available as part of the pledges for this campaign too.

Artifact 6 (OLD) - The Midderlands Bookmark

Physical Copy only.

The Midderlands bookmark. This bookmark was created during the first Kickstarter project, and is available as part of the pledges for this campaign too. It is matt-laminated one side, and gloss-laminated the other to act as a character tracker (when using a Staedtler Lumocolor pen or similar)

Unique Artifact (NEW) - The Original 'Filler Art' Book

This artifact is unique. It is one of a kind. There is only one. No more. Ever! This book contains some (not all) of the filler art created by Glynn Seal that will appear in the book. As the project develops, I will draw required filler art in this book (not every page will be filled), but it will include illustrations and maps. The video below shows four pieces of art that were in the book at campaign launch. Check the updates for more pieces.

This is no longer available as a pledge reward. It will be a prize that can be won by sharing, blogging or posting about the project. Keep your eye on my media posts for more details - Facebook, Google+ or Twitter. Details to follow.

The pledge levels are provided such that the three Blackwych pledge levels are for new content. The three Leechfield pledge levels are for people that want the new and old content - this may be because they never got on the first Kickstarter, OR that they want another copy for themselves, their friend, or their dog.

Summary of Rewards Available

Rewards Summary
Rewards Summary

Commercial Use Art License - added 6th Feb 2018!

All current and pledges going forward for the following one (1) pledge levels:

  • Leechfield Lord (£70)

...will have access to 600dpi mono scans of the cartography and artwork created in the Filler Art book. The artwork is that provided by Glynn Seal only, and only those pieces created in the filler art book. No art from other artists involved in the project will be available.

The great news is that this license will be a commercial use license. It will be non-exclusive, time unlimited, and require attribution. I will retain the copyright. At the conclusion of the Kickstarter campaign -- in the survey stage -- I will ask backers at the relevant pledge levels to provide the legal name for the license - this is optional of course.

[YES!!!] £14,500 : Gloomium-smeared

As standard, The Midderlands Expanded book will be produced with a  matt laminate/spot UV finish, but at £14,500, it will instead be gloss laminated with green foil titling to cover.

Backers pledging for the original The Midderlands Setting & Bestiary (Artifact 4) will receive that book in the original matt-laminated/spot UV cover finish.

[YES!!!] £15,500 : Dual Havenland Map/Mood Art

Each copy of The Midderlands Expanded will have a 2nd copy of the Havenland map/mood art included. So you would be able to have the map on the table, and the mood art on the wall for maximum effect!

[LOCKED] £21,250 : 2nd Printing of The Midderlands Setting & Bestiary

I will use any additional funds to order a 2nd printing (500 copies) of the original The Midderlands Setting & Bestiary (Artifact 4), Midderlands Map (Artifact 5) and Midderlands Bookmark (Artifact 6). This will have two effects:

  • I will increase the limits split across the Leechfield pledge levels to allow for another 500 copies, meaning more people who don't have both books can jump aboard.
  • With any remaining copies, there is more goodness for the future.

[LOCKED] £26,000 : Book Three...

I will set aside the additional money to commission art and writing for the third 'The Midderlands' book (thus reducing the later funding needs), which will detail the city of Great Lunden, and also a huge dungeon in Middergloom. This is not part of this Kickstarter, and there is currently no timescale.

VERY, VERY (with knobs on) IMPORTANT!

All the add-ons listed below will be collected separately by Backerkit at the end of the campaign. PLEASE DO NOT INCREASE YOUR PLEDGES IN THE KICKSTARTER.

Add-ons requirements and charges will be collected in BackerKit

Serpentking Cover

For an additional cost of approx. £100 (only available to order via BackerKit) get yourself one (1) new design, custom-made, slip-on, Serpentking leather cover. This will be a slightly different version to the Muckulus, and the design will be clarified as the campaign progresses. Expect a different leather, and three cerulean/turquoise snake eyes in a triangular form.

Also;

  • Your name will get added to the Kickstarter credits in the front of The Midderlands Expanded book.
  • I'll also sign your book(s).

VERY, VERY (with bells on) IMPORTANT!

All the packing/shipping charges listed below will be collected separately by Backerkit at the end of the campaign. PLEASE DO NOT INCREASE YOUR PLEDGES TO INCLUDE SHIPPING IN THE KICKSTARTER. Shipping

The digital versions of the book will be delivered via OBS (DriveThruRPG and RPGNow). No extra cost other than your pledge for this. You will need to setup an account at DriveThruRPG or RPGNow prior to delivery. This email address will be collected by survey on successful Kickstarter, just in case it's different to your Kickstarter email address.

The cost of shipping is NOT included in the Kickstarter pledge levels above. These pledge level shipping costs are dependent on your location and will be collected separately via BackerKit after the campaign ends. Just so you are made aware ahead of time, these are noted below and subject to slight variation.

Also, costs for shipping of physical add-ons will be charged additionally at the rates shown in BackerKit after the campaign ends.

For information on shipping zones and countries - see here: http://www.royalmail.com/international-zones. These costs are:

Shipping and Packaging Costs
Shipping and Packaging Costs

The costs are at the mercy of the UK postal service and because of the book size are just outside of the "large letter" rate and deemed to be a "small parcel".

Delivery

Having done this before, I'm quite comfortable with the timescales and potential delays that are likely to crop up. Much of the work is underway already and shipping during October 2018 delivery is achievable, if not before. The shipping will be handled in phases as the ordered books and add-ons arrive from suppliers, so some backers may receive their pledge items before others.

As always, your support and sharing of the campaign can help it reach it's goal. Please share the campaign on social media, and feel free to blog about it too.

Your support is fantastic and valued. Thank you for reading.

Risks and challenges

This is my second Kickstarter.
My first one was delivered on-time, on budget, and has been well-received and well-regarded.

I have also been involved in many Kickstarters as a committed and timely contributor and backed many others too. I have created and self-published books already via OBS.

I have a good network of suppliers, and contingency planning. I understand many of the risks, and have experience of project management in other areas of my life. I am thorough by nature and this Kickstarter would not be "active" unless I was sure of successful delivery.

I have many things already in place, and can devote much of my time to successful delivery.
Short of Armageddon, not meeting funding needs or ill health this will happen.
