About this project

Friends-

We chose to cancel the Kickstarter in mid-May due to poor traction. Please read our final two posts to learn more about our pivot and next steps!

Also, this article is helpful in describing where we're going next: http://www.longfellownokomismessenger.com/junket-makes-room-for-all-square-restaurant-joins-forces-for-social-good/

JUNKET: WHO WE ARE

A business for good that’s had a real neighborhood impact

For the last four and a half years, Julie and her crew have brought high quality product, near-perpetual enthusiasm, free donuts & coffee, and an intentional focus (fostering community through creativity and reuse) to a formerly vacant storefront in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis.

JUNKET & BEYOND: WHERE WE'RE GOING

We're developing a supply chain solution for reused items. This supply chain would help reuse stores (including Junket) improve their assortment and enable them to compete on convenience with (or deliver new sourcing infrastructure to) mass retail.

By mainstreaming convenient reuse, we'll be able to meet people wherever they're at on the journey to sustainability. Our goal: have fun and gather steam together as we drive to a tipping point that leads to widespread adoption of the most environmentally sustainable goods possible: those that already exist.

While we work on this supply chain technology, we want to continue to improve Junket's consumer-oriented, emissions-neutralizing model in lockstep with this critical technical development. We've identified a number of strategies that will help us shape up the model while bringing added value to the neighborhood.

Your support will help us expedite the following:

1- Make room for food! Our community members -- and our customers -- have been clamoring for walkable dining options in the Hiawatha neighborhood. Given the absence of commercial kitchens along Minnehaha Avenue, we've offered to create space for a new one so that All Square, a gourmet grilled cheese restaurant concept with a socially conscious model, can join us in this building.

Our neighborhood is a food desert. Let's change that.
Our neighborhood is a food desert. Let's change that.

2- We've got momentum, we've established systems, and we know where we need to go next: The most sustainable goods possible are the ones that already exist. We already get rave reviews for our hyper-organization of so many itty bitty secondhand items -- but we can do better.

In order to continue offering an assortment of the size and scope you've come to expect in a smaller space, we want to improve the utility of our new footprint by investing in fixtures that will help us consolidate our small item collections. This, in turn, will make way for more functional furniture and larger items.

'Used' buttons are of higher design and production quality than those typically available today.
'Used' buttons are of higher design and production quality than those typically available today.

3- Make it easier to live sustainably: You'll need to develop systems that require a bunch of stuff (containers, totes, dispensers, labeling supplies, etc) in order to be able to purchase things that don't come pre-wrapped in plastic.

For example, if you're going to the co-op, you'll need reusable bags for your bread and salad, and airtight containers for things like rice and coffee. If you want to keep better track of small functional items, you may need more organizing tools. We want to offer you the ability to pick up these sorts of items without having to buy them new.

After fielding 80 pounds of crayons in 3 hours during a recent reuse drive, we see an opportunity to supply your kiddos' fall school supply lists.
After fielding 80 pounds of crayons in 3 hours during a recent reuse drive, we see an opportunity to supply your kiddos' fall school supply lists.

4- Track our Successes: While we've made exciting traction, it'll take a concerted effort to weigh, analyze, and label our offerings so we can all begin to better wrap our heads around the environmental impact of our purchases.

Our friends at Ecotone Analytics, GBC helped us figure out how to gather, organize, and interpret the data we've been collecting.
Our friends at Ecotone Analytics, GBC helped us figure out how to gather, organize, and interpret the data we've been collecting.

5- Visual Storytelling: Fund the development of additional key visual representations of relevant data that can be quickly understood and digitally distributed. We've already begun working with the good people at Background Stories to create visual aids that clearly articulate the relative environmental benefit of reuse when compared with not only new manufacturing, but also when measured against products made using 100% recycled materials.

If keeping carbon in the ground is our priority, then reusing what we already have collectively available to us is a powerful solution.

We want to develop more stories that will help people feel *great* about choosing reused product.

The folks at Background Stories have turned our analysis into easy-to-understand visuals.

Speaking of rewards

We have no shortage of creative ideas around here, but we often struggle with finding time to execute them. In order to make sure that our textile rewards ship promptly, we'll be pulling everything together, and then partnering with our friends at Monkey In A Dryer to handle printing at scale.

When you support this campaign at specific backer levels, you will receive a reward that matches the description's stated design and function. The actual item on which we print may vary by color, size, or pattern: be prepared for a little silliness should we need to get creative during the fulfillment process!

Rewards, Junket style!

Stretch goals

This Kickstarter is just one small piece in our vision for a reuse revolution. With your help, we'll hit our initial target quickly. Additional support will help us have even more impact:

Continue Technical Development: Test and determine the required development budget to build a tool that enables crowd-sourced supply (our friends at Software for Good have already helped us develop a clickable prototype).

Imagine being able to track your carbon impact on items as specific as paper clips (we're working on it).
Imagine being able to track your carbon impact on items as specific as paper clips (we're working on it).

Fund Junket's 2017 Community Events:  In addition to our expected $10,000 in NightMarket costs (which we're prepared to offer as a reward but still need to fund), our ongoing events roster of creative classes, repair events, and volunteer opportunities requires roughly 500 hours of support.

Free skilling classes are among our well-attended offerings...

Fund Marketing Support for the MinneMile: Most of the organizing to develop the Minnehaha Mile has been done on a volunteer basis by the Avenue's vintage shop owners, with Julie taking the lead on much of this effort.

There are now a dozen shops along Minnehaha that offer reused product as part or all of their retail assortment.
There are now a dozen shops along Minnehaha that offer reused product as part or all of their retail assortment.

We're also mapping out how we're going to fund development of the supply chain app, and we know we have work ahead of us to realize the promise of  a supply chain fed via the contents of attics and closets, and fulfilled with the help of everyday good people.

While we have gotten this far on a bootstrapped dream and a gazillion hours of sorting other people's stuff, it's going to take a whole lot more work to deliver solutions that rally collaboration at scale and establish Junket as a social brand capable of influencing behavioral norms on a national platform.

Your enthusiasm has helped us get this far, and as we set our sights on a more ambitious target, we invite you to join us in making it happen.

Whether you back this campaign, help us spread the word about our big idea(l)s, and/or swing by during the next few weeks to find a treasure and enjoy a donut, we value your participation and support!

JUNKET & BEYOND: WHERE WE'RE GOING

We're the only species on the planet who actively impedes our own best chances of survival, and I can't help but think that we'd make better decisions if we had better information and better choices. Within this context, I've been using Junket as a lab of sorts to test ideas, gauge response, and ask questions.

The November election results were a powerful catalyst to share what I've learned. We've got to reverse a disturbing trend, quickly, and we clearly can't expect the government to do it for us.

We've already begun the technical work of developing a supply chain solution for reused items. This supply chain would help reuse stores (including Junket) compete with mass retail in terms of convenience and assortment. Further, it would enable widespread adoption of the most sustainable goods possible: those that already exist.

We want to continue to improve Junket's consumer-oriented, emissions-neutralizing model in lockstep with this critical technical development.

JUNKET & JULIE: WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

During the last four and a half years, I've invested countless hours and several hundred thousand dollars in sales proceeds into this socially beneficial retail model, free community events, MinneMile development & promotion, free donuts & coffee, developing an environmentally-informed perspective, and developing an executable social response to climate disruption. Furthermore, I've spent the last six months preparing to lead a social response to climate disruption.

With this campaign, I am asking - point blank - for a return on this extended investment.

I'm one person running both shows, and it has become clear that doing what needs to be done with both of these efforts (shop and beyond) would make it impossible for me to be the parent I want to be for Meridel. She deserves more of my time and attention, and I want to enjoy more of hers.

The shop matters. Her future matters more.

This campaign will give the shop a much-needed cushion so I can take a strategic risk in creating new (living wage) jobs at Junket. This, in turn, will make it possible for me to pivot out of a retail operations role and more fully into an emerging strategic one without shortchanging my family life.

Expected results: healthy mama, well-adjusted child, and exponentially more social impact, plus a strong anchor on an increasingly vibrant commercial corridor in a lovely neighborhood that many of us call home.

In short: this project is worth your investment.

Risks and challenges

We're no strangers to troubleshooting around here.

Sourcing enough of anything on demand is tricky without a supply chain; we can't just flip a switch to bring in more hankies or t-shirts. If any of our reuse-product reward levels is particularly popular, it may delay our ability to get your rewards out the door. It may also mean that you get a red item, for example, instead of the pictured white one.

We’re pretty sure we're equipped to handle whatever you guys throw at us, though -- and we want a chance to practice sourcing at a different scale than we have in the past -- so we've decided not to limit reward levels for our physical product, and to instead respond to whatever happens. Practice makes better, right?

The other thing that can be tricky without a supply chain is efficiently communicating what is and isn’t useful to a distributed audience. Drawing attention to our mission has the potential to trigger more unsolicited donations of stuff -- and while some stuff is useful, too much of anything can get overwhelming quickly.

If you're a downsizing boomer, an aspiring minimalist, or dealing with a family estate, please consider backing the project as a way to learn more about our efforts to channel useful goods back into the marketplace -- but also to better understand our fluctuating capacity to digest carloads of other people's unwanted stuff.

Of course, these challenges are precisely the social issues we're working to solve at scale. Frankly, we're excited to have an opportunity to troubleshoot and test this with help from all of you!

How does Junket get all of its stuff?

We get this question at the shop on the daily -- and it's true that Julie's not shy about sharing her acquisition methods -- but were you really planning on settling in for a ten-minute answer? We didn't think so -- but perhaps it'll make for an interesting read. At this reward level, you'll get the Cliffs Notes version: a write-up that explains a variety of ways in which Junket acquires product.

Yes, we'll share sources. And yes, we expect some of you will immediately launch your own resale empires. Is it wise to create competition? The short answer, in the case of saving more useful items from the waste stream, is YES.

    Customized Breakdance Performance

Our 8YO Jr. Shopkeeper has offered to customize and deliver a break dance (2 minutes or thereabouts) for anyone who backs us at $100 and chooses this reward. If you live remotely, this can be delivered electronically (she is, after all, pursuing her dreams of YouTube fame). She has set her backer limit at 50, and she's also told me I'll have to pay her $50 per dance (tough negotiator, but she's worth it). Clearly, she's better at this job than we are.
