The Early Bird is building a nest
It's no secret that Cardiff's food scene is heating up, however there is a worrying shortage of well-trained chefs. Despite the growing opportunities for employment, meaningful apprenticeships are difficult for aspiring young chefs to find.
Our new artisan bakery is going to help fix this problem, that's why we’re called The Early Bird- we’re going to help young chefs ‘catch the worm’. Through our engaging programme, we'll guide our apprentices through gaining the skills and confidence needed to start their own rewarding career in catering.
We'll be opening The Early Bird artisan bakery & cafe in Cathays this October! Inside our beautiful open plan shop you'll be able to watch our bakers mix, shape and bake bread while enjoying a delicious brunch or cup of our house-roasted organic coffee.
The Garden Party
Next spring we will begin renovating our garden, creating the perfect oasis for you and friends to come and enjoy brunch in the glorious sunshine.* To celebrate we'll be throwing one heck of a party and want you to join us. Many of our rewards include free tickets so snap them up because its going to be an event not to be missed!
*glorious sunshine not guaranteed, let's be fair, it is Wales.
In short, the money you donate to us is completely invaluable. We are a start-up and every penny donated is going to used preciously. We are treating our refurbishment as the first platform for fulfilling our mission statement- 'No Half Measures'. We are conscious of using as many recycled, British made and most importantly high quality materials as possible. We will not cut corners when creating the beautiful space that will showcase our apprentice's achievements.
A short list of some of the works that need to be completed are:
- Re-plumbing our coffee machine
- Electrical alterations to supply power to essential equipment
- Installing a new energy efficient window
- Sourcing and upcycling second hand furniture
- Building display counters and shelving
- Painting the facade of the shop
- Painting & decorating the inside of the Bakery
But most importantly...
I want to take a minute to really, sincerely thank you for looking at our project. Success in our business is going to be measured by the smiles on your faces when you see what we, all of us together, have created. I cannot wait to meet you.
Love and thanks,
Ceri & The Early Bird Team
Risks and challenges
I once had a friend ask me why I was nervous about starting up. She said, 'What's the problem? Are you worried about the Bakery failing?' And I thought for a second about the years of work I've put in already, the countless tough decisions, the cuts and burns I've suffered and I realised that I wasn't worried about failing, because in my mind- it wasn't an option.
It's true, there are risks in opening any business, especially one as unique and demanding as ours, but our years of experience, dedication and delicious products will give us the edge we need to thrive in an ever changing market.
The money donated towards helping refurbish the bakery will pay for labour, materials and furniture. In order to make sure we are able to complete the project within this budget we have consciously sourced recycled and second hand materials, contracted a dedicated team of local trades people and enlisted an incredibly supportive network of family and friends.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
